Microsoft gets stricter with low performers, rolls out new rules and exit policy
Microsoft has introduced a new set of internal policies aimed at tightening its performance management processes. In an internal email sent to managers, the company's new Chief People Officer, Amy Coleman, laid out updated tools and guidelines that are designed to help managers quickly act on underperformance and reward top contributors with greater clarity, according to Business of the key changes includes a stricter exit path for employees who consistently score low on performance reviews. These employees — those falling under the 0 to 60 per cent reward bracket — will no longer be eligible for internal job transfers. In addition, if they exit the company under these conditions or through a formal improvement plan, they will be barred from being rehired for the next two with zero and 60 per cent Rewards outcomes and/or on an active PIP will not be eligible for internal transfers. Former employees who left with zero or 60 per cent Rewards or during/after a PIP will not be eligible for rehire until two years after their termination date," the company said in an internal email. The move is likely a part of a bigger shift seen across the tech industry, where companies have become more focused on productivity and efficiency following years of rapid hiring and expansive perks. Earlier this year, Microsoft reportedly laid off around 2,000 employees who were marked as underperformers, without offering severance. The decision followed an extensive internal review process, which included performance assessments even at senior leadership email mentioned that Microsoft is rolling out new performance-related tools for FY25, which aim to create more transparency and consistency in how performance is evaluated and rewarded. Managers are being encouraged to register for upcoming sessions that will walk them through the changes, including how to better distinguish between varying levels of impact while deciding rewards and globally uniform performance improvement process has also been introduced. Managers can now place struggling employees on a structured improvement plan with specific targets and timelines. Those employees will have the option to either work towards improvement or leave voluntarily with a separation offer under a new exit scheme called the Global Voluntary Separation Agreement (GVSA).Going forward, Microsoft is also working on new initiatives that will help managers handle performance conversations more effectively. These include AI-based training tools that simulate real-life feedback scenarios, enabling managers to navigate difficult discussions with confidence.
