HD Hyundai Construction Equipment's smart factory to serve as global production hub

HD Hyundai Construction Equipment has inaugurated its smart factory at the Ulsan Campus in Dong-gu, South Korea. This facility aims to serve as a global production hub, marking a significant milestone in the company's modernisation efforts, reported BusinessKorea. The smart factory integrates advanced technologies to optimise production and logistics processes. The plant's inauguration ceremony was attended by approximately 400 individuals, including HD Hyundai chair Kwon Oh-gap, vice-chair Chung Ki-sun, XiteSolution president Cho Young-cheul, president Choi Cheol-gon, and labour union branch chair Lim Young-mo, as well as other key executives, employees, and partners. Since 2023, HD Hyundai Construction Equipment has invested Won200bn ($150m) in a modernisation project to upgrade facilities and expand production capacity at the Ulsan factory. The project integrates Factory 1 and Factory 2 within the existing 234,710m² site, boosting equipment and operating systems to transform the facility. The smart factory features an integrated system that unifies production and logistics lines, introducing a real-time product tracking system. According to the company, productivity and quality consistency are improved with welding robots and vision sensors on the fabrication parts production line. Automated guided vehicles and AI-based quality inspection systems have also increased automation on the assembly line. HD Hyundai Construction Equipment anticipates a 20% improvement in labour productivity and a 35% reduction in product completion time. The production capacity for excavators and wheel loaders is expected to rise by 56%, from 9,600 to 15,000 units annually. The company expects the campus to link with major overseas production subsidiaries and customisation centres in the US and Europe. Kwon stated: 'The new factory, reborn with a smart and safe production system, will establish itself as the world's best production base equipped with technology and environment.' Choi highlighted the site's enhanced quality competitiveness, saying: 'We will continuously introduce the best products that can lead the construction equipment industry, including next-generation new models.' During the inauguration, HD Hyundai Construction Equipment delivered five units from the smart factory, including a 40-ton (t) class excavator, a 125t ultra-large excavator, and a 35t large wheel loader, to dealers in South Korea, the US, Europe, China, and Indonesia. Last month, the company reported sales of Won906.8bn and an operating profit of Won41.7bn in the first quarter of 2025, a year-over-year decline of 7.4% and 22.3%, respectively. It also unveiled its new excavator model at KINTEX 1st Exhibition Center in Goyang-si, South Korea. Apple iPhone Fold Could Use Samsung OLED Panels To Rival Galaxy Z Fold

Apple iPhone 16 Pro Prakhar Khanna Apple's first foldable iPhone could be launched as soon as next year. There is no official word on an iPhone Fold, but according to a new report, the company is moving away from its key strategy to ensure premium OLED panel quality. Apple usually uses displays from multiple suppliers to drive down costs while maintaining high quality. However, it is said to equip the first iPhone Fold exclusively with OLED panels from Samsung Display. According to a report from Business Korea, the first foldable iPhone will use Samsung Display's OLED panels to rival Samsung Mobile's Galaxy Z Fold series. For context, the two Samsung companies operate separately. While the Korean tech giant has six years of expertise in foldable OLED technology, it is also constantly innovating and experimenting with shrinkable and rollable displays (showcased at CES 2025). Apple is trusting Samsung's foldable OLED expertise for its first iPhone Fold. In the recent past, Samsung Display has faced tough competition from Chinese companies like BOE, which resulted in its share dropping to 40% last year. However, this strategic partnership with Apple is expected to 'significantly impact Samsung's market share in foldable OLEDs.' While the supply volume for Apple's foldable iPhone has not been finalized yet, the report goes on to state that Samsung Display's market share is "predicted to rise dramatically to the 70% range next year.' The demand is said to exceed the initially projected annual level of 9 million units and potentially reach over 15 million units, reigniting demand for the foldable OLED market. Apple iPhone 16 Pro Prakhar Khanna Apple's first foldable iPhone is rumored to unfold to an iPad Mini-like 7.8-inch inner screen, whereas you might get a 5.5-inch display on the front. It is said not to unfold in a square-ish form like the Galaxy Z Fold 6 to reduce letterboxing (thick borders when watching videos). Instead, it might offer an 11-inch iPad-like 4:3 aspect ratio for a better video consumption experience. This could help Apple ensure software compatibility on its first-generation foldable. Previously, Ming-Chi Kuo, a reliable analyst at TFI Securities, has predicted Touch ID to make a return on the iPhone Fold. It is rumored to be 9–9.5mm thick when folded and 4.5–4.8mm when unfolded, which could be thinner than the required thickness to house Face ID sensors. To compare, the current world's thinnest book-style foldable phone, the Oppo Find N5, measures 8.93mm when folded and around 4.25mm when unfolded. By contrast, Huawei's tri-fold Mate XT Ultimate is 3.6mm thin when fully unfolded. Both of them are significantly thinner than Samsung's current Galaxy Z Fold 6, which measures 5.6mm when unfolded. So, you can expect the iPhone Fold to be thicker than the Chinese counterparts but slimmer than its direct rival. The iPhone Fold might pack a 'high-density battery,' which could first make its way to the iPhone 17 Air this year. On the optics front, you can expect to get a dual-camera setup with one selfie shooter on both the cover display and the foldable screen. Kuo says that the iPhone Fold will be a 'true AI-driven iPhone' since a bigger screen can offer a better cross-app AI experience. Apple iPhone 15 Pro Prakhar Khanna Apple's iPhone Fold is said to be priced around $2,000, according to the Business Korea report. However, Kuo has predicted it to cost between $2,000 and $2,500. This is more expensive than Samsung, Google, and OnePlus foldables, but Apple fans are likely to give it a warm reception. According to Kuo, the iPhone Fold is predicted to ship 3–5 million units in 2026. However, the volume production will be capped till 2027 due to the complexity of manufacturing. It could reach 20 million units, including the second-generation iPhone Fold, by the end of 2027.

Samsung's latest tech innovation is a giant 5K ePaper display

Known for its display technology, Samsung has expanded the innovation of the ever-evolving eInk or ePaper, having introduced its latest screen with impressive high-resolution features at the recent ISE 2025 conference in Barcelona. The 75-inch display is now the world's largest color ePaper screen. It also features a 5K (5,120 x 2,880 pixels) resolution and 16:9 aspect ratio among impressive specifications. The display is intended for outdoor advertising that is traditionally paper-based, such as posters and menus. The high resolution allows for improved visibility in outdoor spaces. Tech Radar noted that the previous largest ePaper color display was the 32-inch Philips Tableaux 5150I. Samsung's display also has a focus on sustainability and ultra-low power consumption, with the ability to function at just 0.00W power when displaying images. This allows the display to only use energy when transitioning between images. The display itself is made of 50% recycled plastics, while its packaging is made completely of paper. Hardware-wise, the ePaper display features 8GB of storage, a built-in rechargeable 5000mAh battery, and two USB-C ports, as well as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity options. The display runs Samsung's Tizen OS for software. Other software includes a dedicated mobile app that allows users to remotely manage display content from their smartphones, including scheduling and sleep/wake cycles. Samsung's VXT (Visual eXperience Transformation) allows users to optimize content visually. Samsung's 5K color ePaper display won the Best Product Award at ISE 2025, excelling in several categories, including Digital Signage, Installation, and AV Technology, according to Business Korea. Samsung is already a leader in the display sector; however, the e-paper display is poised to see growth in the coming years at a rate of 32% between 2023 and 2028, market research firm Technavio noted. The earning potential stands at approximately $15.3 billion, from which Samsung can likely benefit significantly. Samsung notably showcased a 27-inch 5K QD-OLED display at CES 2025 last month. While at the opposite end of the display arena, specifications such as 5K screens are now among the top trends for 2025 and beyond.
