WA Planning Commission approves Busselton social housing, despite opposition
WA's Planning Commission has approved a high-density social housing development in the state's South West despite a fierce backlash by residents. The three-and-four-storey apartment block will be built on an unused site on Brown Street in Busselton, 223 kilometres south of Perth, by developer Housing Choices Western Australia. It will feature 30 apartments, 16 of which will be social housing units and 14 affordable housing. With the median house price climbing to $780,000 and rents now upwards of $800 per week, housing has become a critical issue in the community. More than half of the public submissions opposed the development. Residents cited safety and potential antisocial behaviour as key concerns. Signs advertising the project were vandalised during the review process. "It's great to see approval granted for much-needed housing for vulnerable people in the area," Planning Minister John Carey said. "The development will transform an unused, 2,034-square-metre site into much-needed social and affordable housing in Busselton." Busselton Ratepayers Association secretary Jane Bennett said she was acutely aware of the city's housing crisis, but did not support the development as a solution. "We desperately need housing and options for people," she said. The WA Planning Commission received 268 submissions in its public consultation period, of which 148 were strongly opposed. Other concerns included the appearance of the building and parking. Ms Bennett said there had been antisocial issues at other social housing developments, including in the Perth suburb of Inglewood, where residents spoke of living in fear due to the behaviour of a small group of social housing residents. She said the Cook government should consider installing tiny homes throughout Busselton. A similar WA-first initiative was introduced by homeless support group Accordwest in Bunbury in 2021. "The message is for dilution, not concentration of these housing units," Ms Bennett said. "There is concern that people are just trying to stop development, but our view is that the problems that could happen with this could spread to the entire community." Busselton's council has endorsed the housing development, citing a crippling shortage of local housing stock. City of Busselton Mayor Phill Cronin said the development should help people in need of community housing. "The city's current community housing units, which are provided for the over 55s, are at full capacity and have a wait list of in excess of 50 people," Mr Cronin said. "So this development may assist to alleviate some of those pressures. The Planning Commission added a condition to change the visual appearance by painting the apartment in a lighter colour palette, in keeping with the coastal surroundings, rather than the original red brick. Ms Bennett said ratepayers against the project would not give up. "Just because they've said it's approved doesn't mean that there aren't many avenues we can go through to make sure that we're not dismissed," she said. "Our voices in Busselton will be heard." Construction is expected to begin early next year.

SWFL: Busselton beat Carey Park by 37 points, South Bunbury smash Collie by 81 points
Busselton's dynamic attacking trio fired them to another win on Saturday, with the Magpies beating Carey Park by 37 points at Bovell Park. Liam Creighton (five goals) moved to the top of the competition's goal-kicking race ahead of teammate Ryan Ekert (three) and Mitchell Cameron (two) was also prominent as their side claimed a 14.7 (91) to 8.6 (54) victory. A seventh win from eight games this season leaves Busselton with a three-game buffer inside the top five, though they have played one game more than much of the chasing pack. The Panthers led by 12 points after kicking the first three goals of the second term, but the hosts responded with the next three to take a one-goal lead into half-time, which they boosted to 24 points at the final break. Veterans Matt Martin (four goals) and Rory O'Brien (three) provided most of the attacking punch for the Panthers, who now sit in seventh with a 3-4 win-loss record despite owning a strong percentage of 118.71. South Bunbury recorded the biggest win of the round in Saturday's other game, smashing Collie by 81 points at Collie Recreation Ground. A huge margin looked in the offing when a 12-goal to none first half saw the Tigers take a 72-point advantage into half-time but the Eagles fought back across the third and fourth quarters in an eventual 17.12 (114) to 4.9 (33) result. The result has seen the reigning premiers move into third ahead of their WA Day weekend derby clash with undefeated ladder-leaders Bunbury on Sunday. Spearhead Blaine Johnson slotted four goals for the winners and Jye Clark — the brother of Fremantle star Jordan who was cleared to the club earlier this season — continued a good start to life in the league with two of his own. On Sunday, a dominant second half powered Harvey-Brunswick-Leschenault to a 74-point victory over Eaton in their clash at Glen Huon Reserve. The Lions took a four-point lead into the main break after an even first half but added 12 goals in the second while keeping their hosts to only one to claim an 18.13 (121) to 7.5 (47) win. Jai Rout led the way with five goals for the winners, with Brendan Tingey (three goals), Jesse Crichton, Jarrod Humphries and Emmett Templeton (all two) also doing damage in attack. Having not tasted defeat in their four games since coach John Baggetta returned for a second stint at the club, the Lions remain in fourth spot on the ladder. Sunday's other game saw Augusta-Margaret River defeat Harvey Bulls by 49 points at Gloucester Park. The Hawks did not have everything their own way, but were good enough to come away with an 11.13 (79) to 4.6 (30) victory which was set up by a six-goal to one first half.

SWFL: Busselton continue strong start to season with 88-point win over Harvey Bulls
Busselton continued their strong start to the South West Football League season with an 88-point victory over Harvey Bulls at Harvey Recreation Ground on Saturday night. A game between the second-placed visitors and the last-placed hosts shaped as a mismatch and played out in that fashion, with the Magpies dominating from siren to siren in a 18.13 (121) to 5.3 (33) victory. After a promising start to the season in which they came within a goal of beating local rivals Harvey-Brunswick-Leschenault in their season opener and lost to Collie by a point in round two, the Bulls have lost their last four games by an average of 89 points. They sit alongside Eaton and Collie as teams with one win for the year, but have a significantly inferior percentage of just 37.46. Dynamic forward Liam Creighton celebrated his 100th game for the Magpies with six goals. Mitchell Cameron, who also kicked six goals, was recognised as the best player afield, continuing a standout start to life at the club in which he has slotted 18 majors in his first five games. Another off-season addition in Ryan Ekert came into the round as the competition's leading goal-kicker but was kept relatively quiet, managing only two. Debutant Jake Chapman was one of few bright spots for the Bulls and was his side's only multiple goal-kicker, with two. The hosts did start the game in fine fashion, winning the first clearance to create an early chance for Hugh Menzies, who kicked truly for the game's first goal inside the opening minute. But the Magpies largely bossed proceedings from there, taking a 25-point lead into the first break, which would have been larger but for inaccuracy in front of goal. Having started the game with five goals from their first 12 scoring shots, Busselton were able to reverse the trend over the remaining three quarters, needing only 20 chances to stack on another 13 majors.
