Ranking the five best SEC wide receiver units for the 2025 college football season

Ranking the five best SEC wide receiver units for the 2025 college football season It's hard to score a lot of points without an effective passing offense. It's hard to have a vertical passing game without good wide receivers. Pass catchers are critical in the modern era of college football. The quarterback has to get the ball there, and the offensive line has to protect the quarterback, but wide receivers are the guys who bring it all together. The playmakers with the finishing touch. Ohio State sealed its national championship thanks to star receiver Jeremiah Smith making a play. Notre Dame left Smith one-on-one in man coverage, and the true freshman made the Irish pay. Meanwhile, Georgia and Penn State struggled in their respective playoff semifinals without playmakers at wide receiver. LSU knows what an elite wide receiver room looks like. The Tigers had historic offenses in 2019 and 2023 as Ja'Marr Chase, Justin Jefferson, Malik Nabers, and Brian Thomas Jr. came through the program. Today, we'll take a look at the best wide receiving corps in the SEC entering 2025. Texas A&M's placement on this list is debatable. The Aggies are losing their five leading receivers from 2024, including Noah Thomas, who transferred to Georgia. But A&M did good work in the transfer portal, and while the room lacks experience, there's no lack of talent. Five-star Terry Bussey is ready for a breakout season after flashing as a true freshman. Bussey caught 17 passes for 216 yards while adding 111 yards on the ground. When A&M gets Bussey the ball in space, good things happen. With a few tune-ups, Bussey will be one of the SEC's top playmakers. A&M added KC Concepcion and Mario Craver from the transfer portal. Concepcion racked up 125 catches and 1,305 yards in two years with NC State. He was one of the ACC's top red zone threats, catching 16 touchdowns. Craver, playing at Mississippi State, posted 368 yards and three scores as a true freshman. Craver liked the big play, averaging 21.6 yards per catch. Arriving from the high school ranks is five-star Jerome Myles. He'll have the chance to make an immediate impact with targets up for grabs. Like A&M, LSU is tasked with replacing significant production. LSU is losing four of its top five receivers, but the Tigers return leading receiver Aaron Anderson. Anderson was a five-star recruit in 2022 and began his career at Alabama. After one year with the Tide, he transferred back to his home state. Anderson was a depth piece in 2023 before breaking out in 2024. Anderson ranked No. 4 in the SEC last fall with 61 receptions. LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier and Anderson have a repertoire and the veteran receiver is slated for a big 2025. LSU went looking for receivers in the transfer portal, landing Barion Brown, Nic Anderson, and Destyn Hill. Brown was one of the top receivers on the market after contributing at Kentucky for three years. Brown's speed is elite -- he can line up in the slot or on the outside and make plays from anywhere. Anderson missed the 2024 season with an injury, but the former Oklahoma receiver was one of the SEC's top big-play threats in 2023. Look for Chris Hilton Jr. to have a big year, too. The fifth-year wideout finished 2024 on a high note and is finally healthy. 3. Texas Longhorns Texas lost Matthew Golden and Isaiah Bond, its top two receivers from 2024, but the Longhorns are reloading. Five-star Ryan Wingo caught 29 passes for 472 yards as a true freshman. Wingo is one of the most talented receivers in college football and is ready to step into a starring role. With Arch Manning stepping in at quarterback, the Longhorns' passing attack will be better. Steve Sarkisian will call his shots with Wingo being a beneficiary. Also returning is DeAndre Moore after not catching a pass as a true freshman in 2023. Moore made the most of his chance as a sophomore with 456 yards and seven touchdowns. Texas signed two blue-chip receivers with Kaliq Lockett and Jamie Ffrench, entering the fold. 2. Auburn Tigers Auburn has questions at quarterback, but the receiver room is in good shape. The headliner is Cam Coleman. The No. 4 overall recruit in the 2024 class caught 37 passes for 598 yards and eight scores as a true freshman. Coleman is one of the most talented players in the country, and if Auburn finds an answer at QB, Coleman's ceiling is sky high. Coleman finished the season strong with 306 yards in his final three games, including hitting the 100-yard mark in his final two SEC contests. Auburn was aggressive in the transfer portal, signing ex-Georgia Tech receiver Eric Singleton. According to the On3 Industry Rankings, Singleton was the No. 1-ranked receiver in the transfer portal. Coleman and Singleton have a chance to be the best wide receiver duo in the country. Both have top-end speed, and there isn't much Coleman can't do. Hugh Freeze's squad has depth behind the playmakers at the top. This is a dangerous group. 1. Alabama Crimson Tide Ryan Williams took college football by storm as a 17-year-old in 2024. The five-star wide receiver put up 139 yards in his college football debut vs. Western Kentucky. A few weeks later, Williams caught six passes for 177 yards vs. Georgia, including a late touchdown to win the game for the Crimson Tide. Williams didn't sustain the pace he set in September, 865 yards and eight scores as a true freshman isn't too shabby. Returning with Williams is Germie Bernard, a former Washington receiver who followed Kalen DeBoer to Alabama. Bernard was one of the SEC's top deep threats with 794 yards, averaging 15.9 yards per catch. DeBoer is going to air it out. Williams and Bernard both have a chance to eclipse 1,000 yards this fall, especially if Bama goes on a playoff run. There are questions about Alabama's wide receiver depth, but the Tide added transfer Isaiah Horton, a proven contributor from Miami.

Plans for robot-assisted surgery will forever change procedures in N.L., surgeons say

Tools will allow for surgical precision not before seen in N.L., docs say Image | Surgeon operating with robot system Caption: The Health Care Foundation, a Newfoundland and Labrador non-profit, is more than halfway to its $8 million fundraising goal to introduce the da Vinci XI surgical robot system into operating rooms. (Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation) Plans to introduce robot-assisted surgery tools to Newfoundland and Labrador's health-care system were unveiled to the public on Wednesday, and the Health Care Foundation says it's already over halfway toward its fundraising goal to make it a reality. Health Care Foundation president and CEO Paul Snow said $4.8 million of a needed $8 million has already been raised since December. It would be used to bring the da Vinci Xi surgical robot system into operating rooms. "Today marks the beginning of a very bold, new chapter in surgical care in Newfoundland and Labrador," Snow said Wednesday. "Our ongoing collaboration with Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services, the government of Newfoundland and Labrador and the many generous individuals, organizations, groups, family and friends that are committed to advancing care is what makes this progress possible." NLHS eastern zone COO Ron Johnson said the technology will change surgery in the province, allowing for minimally invasive surgery to be done in ways not possible before. "It's going to give shorter recovery times for very, very invasive surgery — Something now that you would have to leave this province to get otherwise," Johnson said. "It's going to benefit us. It's going to be shorter lengths of stay, meaning more people will be able to get more surgeries." Surgeons in the province are eager to get their hands on the tool, according to Dr. Angela Bussey. A training unit is currently at the Health Sciences Centre, and the hope is that the system can be integrated soon. "We're going to be able to create a situation in the [operating room] where surgeons are comfortable doing life-saving, complex procedures. And we've not been able to do that in this way to date," Bussey said. "Envision the deepest, darkest place that you could go, and put a grain of sand there or a little piece of corn. [Then] be like, 'Get that for me.' You could never do it with your hands. But with the da Vinci, you can do that. And think about that being a very small amount of cancer or other disease that someone needs to get rid of. And we're able to do that." Bussey said it will also serve as a key training tool for surgeons, as the machine's multiple screens will allow surgeons to observe procedures while they are being performed by another surgeon. She added it can also serve as a key recruitment and retention tool, as cutting-edge technology is brought to Newfoundland and Labrador. Joannie Neveu, a gynecology oncologist, said it will be a game changer. "We use the robot as a surgical equipment that is going to be, basically, the extension of what we can do," she said. "There's also less complication, right? Less bleeding and better recovery. The patient can go back to work or back to their life quicker."

Texas A&M HC Mike Elko provides definitive answer regarding Terry Bussey's position future

Texas A&M HC Mike Elko provides definitive answer regarding Terry Bussey's position future On Thursday, Texas A&M's 2025 spring season begins as second-year head coach Mike Elko is ready to return to the practice field and take advantage of his time with his roster veteran roster while helping the newcomers from the transfer portal and 2025 signing class get acclimated. On Wednesday, Elko, alongside senior cornerback Will Lee III and starting quarterback Marcel Reed, spoke to the local media to preview what we can expect from the Aggies over the next four weeks. With a clear focus on Texas A&M's wide receiver room, former five-star athlete and sophomore wideout Terry Bussey's position future has been an offseason talking point that finally received an official answer from the boss. "Terry (Bussey) is a wideout now." "Terry came in a little bit banged up when we got him in the summer. He never quite got healthy through summer training. He started camp playing corner, and we flipped him midway to receiver. … You saw scratches of what Terry is capable of." Last summer, ahead of his first season, Bussey's position future was still up in the air due to his natural skillset at wide receiver and cornerback, and while he could easily thrive in the secondary, Elko feels that taking away his snaps at wide receiver would not only hurt his development but also place a hole in A&M's offense. During his 2024 freshman season, Bussey appeared in 12 games and recorded 17 receptions and 216 receiving yards. He also gained 102 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.
