Trainer Trent Busuttin has revealed a rank outsider is the best of his South Australian Derby trio

Cranbourne trainer Trent Busuttin has a surprising top seed out of his stable's runners in Saturday's Group 1 South Australian Derby at Morphettville. Busuttin and training partner Natalie Young will saddle up three runners in the $1 million race but it was the outsider of the trio - $41 chance Compressing - that received the trainer's biggest push. 'He's my pick out of the three of them and he's 40/1,' Busuttin said. Compressing won his first two starts before finishing 12th in the Group 3 Chairman's Stakes at his last outing. Busuttin said jockey Daniel Moor would have instructions to be positive on the son of Savabeel early in the race. 'He drew barrier 16 out 16 last start and I wanted him snagged out the back last and he was four-wide at the back of the field and never got into the race,' Busuttin said. 'He'll be put into the race on Saturday. 'He's not just burning around. I like the horse.' VRC St Leger winner American Wolf is the shortest of Busuttin and Young's trio as the $8 second favourite. American Wolf has thrived over staying trips, winning the St Leger over 2800m on Anzac Day, but drops back to 2500m in the South Australian Derby. Compressing sustained a strong gallop to the line & wins at double-figure oddsðŸ'° G1 @JohnnyA_24 has won the last three races from Terang ðŸ' @busuttin — (@Racing) March 21, 2025 'He's going to stay,' Busuttin said. 'I don't know how strong the form line is out of the St Leger but it's not a stellar edition of the race, with all due respect. 'If he runs up to the St Leger, he'll run some sort of race. 'Having (jockey) Mark Zahra helps.' Busuttin said Confetti Garden could improve significantly on two luckless runs in Sydney, including when well beaten in the Group 1 Australian Derby at Randwick last month. 'Confetti Garden hasn't done much wrong,' Busuttin said. 'He was six weeks between runs going into the Tulloch when it had to be moved back to the Tuesday. 'Tommy Berry thought he was going to win at the 200(m) and he just got tired. 'It was a non-event in the Derby. 'He jumped from barrier 18, went back to last and just never got involved. 'He could run well with more luck in Adelaide.'

$101 UK longshot is now a 2025 Stradbroke spruik horse

An X-factor horse who started his career racing as a $101 shot in England is now bound for the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap. Without even racing in recent times, four-year-old gelding Craig has vaulted up Stradbroke betting markets to be a $15 chance to win Queensland's most prestigious race in June. A son of Irish stallion Territories, Craig raced once in England when finishing third at $101 in Newmarket in 2023 before being purchased by Victorian trainers Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young. Craig rose through the grades in Melbourne last winter before finishing second behind Antino in the Group 1 Toorak Handicap and then was beaten six lengths in the $10m Golden Eagle when the Rosehill track that day didn't suit him. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. A minor bone chip injury saw him ruled out of the autumn carnival but Busuttin revealed that, as long as he trialled well next week, Craig had some big fish to fry in the Queensland winter carnival. Craig would kick-off in the Group 3 BRC Sprint at Doomben next month before being deployed in the $3m Stradbroke, where his current rating of 103 would almost certainly see him make the field. • Dethroned The Quokka champ set for Doomben 10,000 'The plan is the Stradbroke,' Busuttin revealed. 'He is a genuine Group 1 horse. 'We were originally thinking of going to The Goodwood (in Adelaide) with him, but now we are not going to. 'We purchased him from England, he had one start at Newmarket at 100-1 and ran third, and we didn't pay a huge amount of money for him. 'Last winter in Victoria, he won some races really well but the winter form doesn't generally stack up. 'But then he should have won a Group 3 race at Sandown and he ran second in the Toorak although he was smashed by Antino that day. 'We went up to the Golden Eagle but it was a slippery track that day and he didn't handle it at all.' Trent Busuttin has a Stradbroke Handicap contender on his hands. The autumn carnival went off the table after a minor bone chip issue so now the Queensland winter is calling. He adds significant intrigue to early Stradbroke betting markets. 'He is quite explosive and has a great turn of foot,' Busuttin said. 'It was a shame he came out of the Golden Eagle with a little chip in his fetlock, so he missed the autumn carnival because of that. The TAB's pre-nominations market for the 2025 Stradbroke Handicap. 'El Roca went from being a boom three-year-old to having a flat tyre and he went to stud after the Straddy.'

Tsitsipas can bounce back from Derby flop and serve up win in VRC St Leger at Flemington

Failing to win the Australian Derby is no barrier to claiming the VRC Leger at Flemington. Three of the last 12 VRC St Leger winners had their last starts in the Australian Derby before relishing the steep class drop in the traditional Anzac Day feature. Tsitsipas will attempt to join the likes of Hippopus (2013), Sacramento (2020) and Alegron (2022) by bouncing back from a Sydney defeat to win the Listed contest. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. 'We were hoping to go up there and get a wet track but that didn't happen,' Busuttin, who trains Tsitsipas in partnership with Natalie Young, said. 'I'm not saying he would have won or been in the finish of that race but he drew wide and was basically three and four-wide without cover the whole way and ran accordingly.' Fortunately for connections, Tsitsipas took no harm from his tough Sydney trip. Busuttin noted Tsitsipas went into the Australian Derby with a bigger than desired gap between runs, meaning the son of Japanese stallion Staphanos would be fitter for the VRC St Leger. Busuttin said the staying test would present a great chance for the promising stayer to compete for good money against lower-rated opposition. 'It's a $200,000 race and he's fit, happy and healthy,' Busuttin said. 'He will stay the 2800(m) no dramas.' 'He's won a maiden at Ballarat by a nose but he's a big, rangy, skinny New Zealand type of staying three-year-old,' Busuttin said. 'He's an old-style sort of horse. 'He's by Tivaci so there would be a query over the distance but he's out of a Zabeel mare and looking at him, he's definitely thrown to the dam side.'
