Big Issue Partners with Bute Energy to Help Jobseekers Find Work in Renewables
A view of Nelson from Glwysilan Common A new partnership aims to create a pathway for people in Caerphilly and Rhondda Cynon Taf who face employment barriers to find work through a major new onshore wind development. Bute Energy and Big Issue Recruit have launched an innovative new partnership to help transform employment opportunities in the renewable energy industry in South Wales. The partnership will enable the Big Issue's recruitment service to employ a dedicated job coach who will work with candidates from local communities to overcome barriers to work and seek employment on the Twyn Hywel wind farm project. With construction on the energy park set to begin in 2026 and to be completed in 2027, Twyn Hywel will be the UK's first generating onshore wind development built under the new Labour Government. The project received consent from the Welsh Government in November. It is expected to create hundreds of jobs directly and through the supply chain. A six-month pilot will see a dedicated job coach work intensively with around 50 candidates, using Big Issue Recruit's tried-and-tested employability support to prepare them for various roles at local businesses contributing to the Twyn Hywel Development. Big Issue Recruit is a national service which helps candidates break down a number of complex and often deeply entrenched barriers to work, such as poor mental health or digital exclusion, and prepare them for employment. Candidates complete a full 12-week programme of training before being certified 'work ready' by their job coaches, at which point they receive support with obtaining and then sustaining work. Big Issue's job coaches will continue with regular check-ins with any candidates that find work at contractors supplying goods and services to Bute Energy as they develop the Twyn Hywel Project. Twyn Hywel Energy Park will be built on land approximately 3km north of Caerphilly in the Aber Valley. The wind farm's 14 turbines will provide 92.4MW of electricity – the equivalent of taking all cars off the road in Caerphilly County Borough each year, or of powering 81,000 homes. As part of the project, Bute Energy has created the Twyn Hywel Community Benefit Fund, which has committed to invest more than £30 million into the community over the 40 year life of the project. This investment of £693,000 per year has been agreed by Bute Energy through engagement with local communities since 2021, with community representatives helping to make decisions on where and how the funds are invested in the local area.

£1 million contract awarded to Welsh family-owned business
A £1 million contract has been awarded to a Welsh family-owned business. Bute Energy, an onshore wind developer, has given the pre-construction contract to Terra Firma for its first onshore wind energy park. The contract will provide crucial insights for construction and allow Terra Firma to hire new staff from the area. This is part of Bute Energy's plan to invest more than £3 billion in 16 onshore wind energy parks across Wales by 2030. The partnership with Terra Firma marks the start of pre-construction ground investigation work at Twyn Hywel Energy Park between Caerphilly and Rhondda Cynon Taf, approved by the Welsh Government in November 2024. The contract includes testing ground samples and archaeological and ecological investigations to protect cultural and heritage assets on site. Sid Anverali, project director for the Twyn Hywel wind farm, said: "We are committed to doing our part to support the Welsh supply chain and contribute to green growth for Wales' economy." Mathew Lake, director at Terra Firma, said: "We are thrilled to be signing this significant contract with Bute Energy. "This contract has enabled us to employ several new staff members ranging from supervising engineers to site support technicians, all of which are from the local area surrounding Twyn Hywel Energy Park."

Group planning 10 wind farms across Wales gets £600 million investment
A plan for a string of 10 major wind farm projects across Wales got a boost on Tuesday after its developers received a £600 million investment from a renewables fund. The projects include Twyn Hywel wind farm, which was given planning permission last year, and will generate enough power for 81,000 homes when completed. The investment has come from Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, which is taking a stake in the companies hoping to build the wind farms, Bute Energy and Green GEN Cymru. Nine more wind farms are still awaiting planning permission, forming part of a £3 billion onshore wind portfolio. Ed Miliband, the energy secretary, said it is a 'significant investment and a vote of confidence' for the Government's clean energy plans. If it is allowed to build them all, Bute Energy's entire portfolio of planned energy projects will generate enough power for 2.25 million homes by 2030. It comes after Labour started a massive push towards wind and solar energy in recent months to make the UK less dependent on global gas prices. The policy is designed to reduce carbon emissions from the power grid by 95% by the end of this decade. Nischal Agarwal, partner at CIP, said the investment 'reflects our confidence in the Welsh renewable sector to deliver much needed infrastructure to Welsh homes and businesses, to play a full role in meeting national renewable energy targets'. Bute Energy and Green GEN Cymru said their projects are in response to the Welsh Government's plan for the country's entire electricity consumption to come from renewable sources by 2035. Bute Energy's projects aim to meet 25% of this target – bosses say they could create up to 2,000 jobs. Managing director of Bute Energy, Stuart George, added that the company hopes to have six of the projects on 'the Cabinet Secretary's desk' for decision by this summer.
