The Greenbrier Historical Society names a new executive director

LEWISBURG, WV (WVNS) — The Greenbrier Historical Society (GHS) announced the selection of a new executive director. WVSOM's ASPIRE counseling crew named 'Mental Health Care Hero' According to a press release, Dara Vance, a resident of the Mountain State for a more than four years, was chosen for the position. Vance possesses multiple degrees in Fine Art, Educational Leadership, U.S. History, and recently gained her Ph.D. in U.S. History from the University of Kentucky. Vance came to the area through service as an AmeriCorps VISTA for the Meadow River Valley Association. She has collaborated with non-profit community organizations, including God's Way Home, Robert C. Byrd Clinic, Greenbrier County Family Support Center, and the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, the release noted. Through her experience as an artist and historian, Vance expressed that the study and presentation of history should ask bug questions in small areas. She also expressed that the change from residing in Florida to residing in West Virginia felt similar to a homecoming. Concord University offers prestigious scholarship for students pursuing education in science

ATHENS, WV (WVNS) — Throughout the next three years, nineteen students at Concord University (CU) will be awarded prestigious scholarships. According to a press release, the four-year scholarships for up to $60,000, equating to $15,000 per year, will be awarded to students seeking certain science degrees. Students receiving the scholarships will also get a computer and career-focused enrichment activities to bolster their academic and social growth through graduation. This is made possible through a $1 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to Concord University. WVSOM gears up for their third annual C.A.S.E. camp CU is looking for interested students to seek Bachelor of Science degrees in chemistry, computer science, computer information systems, and environmental geosciences at the institution. The school's Science Engagement and Active Mentoring Program (SEAM) is focused on building fellowship among students and contributing to the national need for educated scientists and technicians by supporting high-achieving students with demonstrated financial need. The project is projected to last through 2030. The SEAM program is will enhance students' STEM and professional identity and development through cohort building, career and entrepreneurial focused trips, mentoring by student peers and faculty members, and different workshops, the release stated. As a special feature, SEAM cohorts will have the chance to be involved in outreach and research at Concord's Materials and Rare Earth Element Analysis Center, as well as Virginia Tech's NSF-funded NanoEarth laboratory. The program aims to grow the STEM workforce within the region. Hinton Area Foundation offers two new scholarships for 2025 CU is recruiting high school seniors for the incoming SEAM cohort. New first-time freshman, transfer students, and in-state and out-of-state residents are eligible to participate. Students that qualify for the program must be PELL grant eligible. The scholarships offered through SEAM cover tuition, room, and board. WVSOM to hold auto extrication training for students

LEWISBURG, WV (WVNS) — The West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM) announced that students will take part in an auto extrication training scenario. According to a press release, students from the Emergency Medicine and Wilderness Medicine clubs at WVSOM will hold an vehicle extrication training exercise in the upper parking lot of the WVSOM campus in Lewisburg from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Monday, March 17, 2025. WVSOM gears up for their third annual C.A.S.E. camp In the past, members of the public have stopped to offer assistance or contacted law enforcement and emergency personnel about the exercise. Although actual accidents may still happen, members of the Lewisburg Fire Department, White Sulphur Emergency Medical Services, and WVSOM security will be in attendance.
