Mobile City Council approves construction contract for Africatown Welcome Center
MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — The Mobile City Council voted Tuesday to approve a construction contract for the Africatown Welcome Center.
According to city officials, construction can begin once the United States Treasury Department approves the contract. Constructed is expected to take one year to complete.

A Mobile spokesperson said the project's total cost is $5.1 million, which will be paid for with RESTORE Act funding.
City officials said the Africatown Welcome Center will serve as a 'strategic community destination' and will provide visitors a 'first stop' to link cultural destinations and historic sites.
Mobile officials also said residents have been actively participating throughout the process. The design process featured multiple community meetings and public input surveys.
A city spokesperson said partners include Mott MacDonald for design, C. Roberds General Contractors, LLC for construction, and Africatown Community Development Corporation, who is the original owner of the property.
