C. S. Lewis's Warnings About the Pursuit of Power

A prominent theme in the work of British writer and scholar C.S. Lewis is a warning about science, magic, and the attempt to gain power over nature. While Lewis certainly wasn't anti-science, he understood that the good uses of science could be easily corrupted when scientific discovery and technological development are stimulated purely by the pursuit of power. According to Lewis, seeking power over nature—from trying to control the weather to trying to control human nature itself—contradicts a spirit of wonder, gratitude, and admiration. It also tends to make other human beings and nature itself accessories, making us lose sight of their inherent value. Lewis most clearly articulated this warning in his nonfiction book 'The Abolition of Man,' adapted from a series of lectures he delivered at King's College, Newcastle in 1943. The book begins with a critique of the then-newly published textbooks that promoted relativism and undercut a belief in objective truth. It goes on to challenge modern attempts to dispense with natural law and manipulate nature to humanity's own ends—which often means, in practice, that some people use applied science as a way to gain control over other people.

'Our earlier guidance (for credit growth) was 14 to 16%, we are moderating that to 12 to 13%. The system level credit growth probably would be 10 to 11%,' Mr Setty said. He said the rate cut by the Reserve Bank of India would put pressure on the bank's margin but he could not quantify the impact. He said the bank's asset quality had been strong for the last five years and there was sufficient headroom to lend money for growth. The board has authorised the bank to raise ₹25,000 by way of Qualified Institutional Placement (QIP) or Follow on Public Offer (FPO).

HC calls for a legal framework to deal with cyberbullying of all kinds

The Kerala High Court has called for a legal framework to address the issue of cyberbullying or online harassment, particularly those incidents which have no sexual connotations. Justice C.S. Sudha made the observation recently while dismissing an appeal filed by Fakrudeen Panthavoor from Malappuram against the the Ernakulam Sessions Court's dismissal of his anticipatory bail petition in a sexual harassment case registered against him for uploading video containing derogatory statements against a woman on social media. It is of grave concern that in this digital age there is a lack of effective legislation to combat cyberbullying, which calls for the urgent attention of the authorities, the court observed. 'Cyberbullying need not be solely defined by sexual overtones, but may manifest in various forms, many of which remain insufficiently addressed by the existing laws. Notably, while the Information Technology Act does not explicitly define or address cyberbullying, amendments made to the Indian Penal Code in 2013 introduced provisions relating to stalking and voyeurism. However, there remains a conspicuous absence of legal provisions that directly address the issue of cyberbullying, particularly those incidents devoid of any sexual context.' Gap in legal framework The court added that 'further exacerbating this concern is the fact that despite the enactment of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita in 2024, no legal provisions have been introduced to specifically address this form of online harassment. This gap in the legal framework, in my opinion, requires immediate rectification by the authorities.' Misconception The court observed that in the era of social media, individuals often operate under the misconception that the right to freedom of expression allows them to produce any form of content, make unfounded criticism, issue abusive remarks, or engage in derogatory conduct, all while evading accountability. This raises serious concerns, particularly in the light of the growing cyberbullying.
