Chevy Giving England Input Into The Next-Gen Corvette Is Proof America Is In The Toilet

General Motors held the official opening of its new advanced design studio in England this week, and announced that it will be revealing a series of Corvette concept cars from each of its global design studios throughout the year, with the first coming from the new UK branch. The announcement sparks questions for the quintessential American sports car, questions like, "what, is America not good enough for you?" Save your metaphorical torches and pitchforks for the next Tesla Takedown — this isn't actually the next-gen C9 Corvette, just another example of GM using the Corvette's daring spirit as the foundation for a dramatic design exercise, which it describes as "rethinking what a Corvette could be with a true blank-page approach." Jokes aside, it's no secret that the U.S. is currently in a precarious position thanks to our Commander in Chief, but international influence is actually a big part of the Corvette's history. The man who secured the future for the Corvette to be an international beacon of hardcore American motorsports, Zora Arkus-Duntov, was an immigrant, after all. But letting an English design office dictate the future of the blueblooded good ol' boy Corvette? That feels a bit sacrilegious. You can let out a sigh of relief though, since GM says there's no production intention behind the concept, and the next two Corvette studies will be done by American design studios. It even integrates a Formula 1–style halo roof structure with a spine that bisects the windshield, giving a subtle nod to the split rear window on the classic Corvette Sting Ray. GM says the exterior design showcases a distinct division between the upper and lower halves of the vehicle, with the upper half focusing on Corvette's classic design elements. The lower half, in contrast, focuses on integration of the EV battery. Trick aerodynamic features increase EV range and efficiency in some settings and increase downforce in others, including a sculpted underbody with fan assistance to suck the car to the road vis-à-vis one McMurtry Spéirling, and active ducting to redirect air over and through the vehicle. Don't be spooked when you see more internationally designed Corvette concepts come out later this year. The next two will come from GM's Detroit and Los Angeles design studios, while the UK studio will also produce a new GMC concept vehicle that will also be unveiled later this year. Though GM says these Corvette concepts have no production intent, the brand has previously said it's working on an all-electric Corvette (and the lineup might expand to additional models), so some design elements could make their way to the eventual C9. There Are Thousands of Unsold New Chevy Corvettes at Dealers Across the U.S.

The C8 Corvette—the car's eighth generation and the first rear mid-engine Corvette—was a big deal for Chevy when it debuted in 2019, and the first C8 Corvettes demanded significant markups past its starting price of $58,900. Now that it's been a few years and the hype has died down, thousands are sitting unsold at dealers, and markups have all but vanished. Over 5,000 C8 Corvettes are currently in Chevy's inventory system, the vast majority from the 2025 model year, which means that more than likely you can go to your local dealership at this very moment and drive away with one. You'll also likely have several to choose from if you don't mind buying your new car off the lot, as most Americans do. An 8-speed dual-clutch transmission comes standard and the C8 Corvette Stingray is the most powerful production Stingray ever; you might even call it a budget supercar if you're feeling generous. The prices in Chevy's inventory system even start below $68,300, with some as low as $63,185 after various offers and discounts are included. One new Corvette was even recently spotted for $58,280, according to The Drive, or less than the starting price after the C8's debut. These prices don't include tax, title, and other fees. Perhaps Chevy is also starting to feel some of the waning demand, as Chevy has spent the last several months hyping the 1,064 horsepower ZR1 version of the Corvette, which debuted last July and has since set several track records. That car starts at $174,995, and has renewed some interest in the C8 right as it gets past midlife. That's because pretty soon, all eyes will be on the C9 Corvette, which is rumored to debut sometime in 2028, and could be the first all-electric Corvette. Or the C9 could be another iteration of the internal combustion engine car that has endured for so long as an American classic, depending on where the EV pendulum is swinging then. Most likely, the C9 Corvette will be a hybrid of some sort, like the Corvette E-Ray. GM might even put in some tech it learned in Formula 1. By then, most of the C8 Corvettes on dealer lots will have moved on, though for now thousands are still there, in plain sight. Corvette Product Manager Harlan Charles Given The Boot

Read the full story on The Auto Wire Popular Corvette Product Manager Harlan Charles took to social media recently to announce his retirement from GM. While he didn't say anything about being fired or given the boot, the word on the street is he was ushered out, not that the man was looking forward to retirement. With other shakeups in the Corvette team management, it appears something is about to happen with America's sports had been working on the Corvette model lineup for 24 years and had been a GM employee for 37 when he announced February 2 it's the end of the road for him. 'My Corvette dream is over – my bubble burst,' he wrote on X. That doesn't sound like he willingly retired but rather was forced into it. My Corvette dream is over - my bubble burst After 24 years on Corvette and 37 at GM, I was informed my time is up and I will no longer be your Corvette Product Manager. I am now retired. Harlan CharlesFORMER Chevrolet Corvette Product Marketing Manager — Harlan Charles (@harlan_charles) February 3, 2025 While these sorts of things happen, the shock was a lot for Corvette fans to process since Charles was quite popular with enthusiasts. But when that's combined with Kirk Bennion, Corvette Exterior Design Manager also getting fired, theories start to fly. Bennion had been with GM for over 40 years and started working on the Corvette line way back in 1986. He was also a favorite with enthusiasts since he's one himself. In fact, as this news has spread across the internet, Corvette fans have expressed dismay and even outrage at the ousting of these two managers. With a C9 Corvette coming soon, it's not unreasonable to wonder if this management shakeup has something to do with taking the sports car in a different direction. Rumors have been running rampant for years that GM wants not only an all-electric Corvette but a whole model family bearing the name. That could include a crossover and sedan. It's possible Charles and Bennion weren't onboard with those or other dramatic changes. But these kinds of out-of-touch decisions are everywhere these days from Dodge's emerging new model lineup to the Ford Mach-E.
