BJP voted out of power in Mizoram's Chakma council
Aizawl: The BJP executive committee in the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC), led by chief executive member (CEM) Molin Kumar Chakma, was voted out of power in a no-trust vote on Monday. This paves the way for Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) to form the next executive committee in the council, reports from Kamalanagar (Chawngte town) in south Mizoram's Lawngtlai district bordering Bangladesh said. The no-confidence motion was moved by ZPM member Doymoy Daveng Chakma during a special session of the council chaired by Lakkhan Chakma, saying that the executive council headed by MK Chakma no longer enjoys the confidence of the CADC and has no sufficient members of district council (MDCs) supporting it. Of 17 MDCs present in the sitting of the council, 15 voted in favour of the no-trust move, and one MDC opposed it. The lone MNF MDC, former CEM Rasik Mohan Chakma, did not cast his vote. MK Chakma became the CEM in the BJP-ruled CADC on Feb 27 after ousting RM Chakma of MNF. While ZPM tried to form the executive council, BJP joined hands with disgruntled ZPM members and secured the support of the lone MNF MDC, forming the executive council. However, the political scenario changed rapidly, leading to the ouster of MK Chakma who will be replaced by the present chairman of the council, Lakkhan Chakma. CADC is experiencing frequent political changes since MNF bagged 10 seats of 20-member CADC in the May 9, 2023 elections.

Mizoram: 7 BJP members of Chakma Autonomous District Council defect to ZPM
AIZAWL: Eight Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members of the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) in Mizoram, including the chief executive member (CEM), resigned from the party and joined the state's ruling Zoram Nationalist Party (ZPM) on Monday. Among the defectors are prominent council members Lakkhan Chakma, Amit Rayan Chakma, Sanjib Chakma, Kalasoga Chakma, Supan Chakma, Ajoy Kumar Chakma, Mohan Chakma, and Santosh Chakma. Their defection significantly alters the power dynamics within the council. A senior CADC official, speaking to HT, expressed surprise at the development, noting that the BJP-led CADC was formed just recently on March 25, 2025. 'The current CEM, Lakkhan Chakma, had just established a majority council. His sudden switch to the ZPM was entirely unexpected,' the official said. The frequent political realignments within CADC have sparked criticism from within the Chakma community in Mizoram. The Central Mizoram Chakma Students' Union, an influential student body, issued a statement condemning the ongoing instability. 'We are deeply concerned about the persistent political turmoil in the CADC. Constant party defections have created an atmosphere of uncertainty and distrust, severely hindering social development and diminishing the council's integrity,' the statement said. Following the latest defections, the ZPM now holds 12 of the 20 seats in the CADC. The BJP retains six seats, and one member belongs to the Mizo National Front (MNF). One seat remains vacant following the death of Sanjeev Chakma on April 10. Just months ago, on March 24, Lakkhan Chakma was elected chairman of the CADC as a BJP member, defeating ZPM candidate Hiranand Tongchangya by 11 votes against four.

Arkansas nonprofit speaks on potential impacts of Trump administration federal funding freeze
BENTON, Ark. – Local nonprofits, including the Central Arkansas Development Council (CADC), said they are confused about the Trump administration's recent freeze on federal funding. The White House says there is no pause on programs like social security, Medicare, food stamps, or student loans and scholarships, but the move created panic and confusion for groups that rely on the funds. 'Our mission is to elevate the causes and conditions of poverty, to help vulnerable populations achieve their potential, and to build strong communities here in Arkansas,' CADC Chief Executive Officer Randy Morris said. Trump administration freezes nearly all federal loans and grants 'Well, initially, when you hear about it, of course, any kind of freeze or anything like that,' Morris said. 'You are wondering, 'Okay, what is it going to do to my agency? How is it going to affect my agency? How is it going to affect us being able to move forward with our mission?'' According to Morris, CADC receives state and federal funding that helps with its wide variety of programs that span 19 counties. Morris said he had to take a moment, slow down, and breathe as the calls began to come in from the worried people they serve. That's when he said he started making his own calls. 'I have reached out to our state funders just to get information about it; of course, they haven't gotten all the guidance around it either,' Morris said. Morris says everyone is in a state of confusion, but for him, it's simple. 'I know people are scared right now, they are worried right now, how is it going to affect the assistance that CADC does,' Morris said. 'Right now we are going to continue to operate as normal, continue to move forward as normal until we find out.' Morris says only time will tell how or if this will affect them. Federal judge temporarily blocks Trump admin's freeze on federal grants, loans On Tuesday, a federal judge blocked the move from the Trump administration minutes before it was scheduled to go into effect.
