Meridian Twp. voters to decide on new community and senior center

MERIDIAN TWP, Mich. (WLNS) – Meridian Township will officially ask its voters to consider two millages during a special election on Aug. 5. If both pass, the money would provide residents with a new community and a senior center. The community currently has a senior-only center for people 55 and older, but the new proposed facility would be available to everyone. There will be two millages for the proposed centers on the August ballot— one to fund construction and the other to fund operations at the new space. Both need to pass for the township to start the project. If they do pass, the average household will see an annual tax increase of around $130. You can calculate how much your taxes would increase, or you can visit the . Township officials say they know families may not want to increase their expenses, but believe the community will see the value of a new communal spot. 'It's crucial to note that at this time, 0.4 mills are coming off of our tax rolls because we paid off our fire station and we're no longer needing to pay for CATA Ready Ride services,' said township supervisor Scott Hendrickson. 'So the net impact of these two ballot initiatives will actually be a lot smaller when you consider that context. That would bring additional meeting space, gym facilities, and a number of other amenities that we hope the community will appreciate'. Supervisor Hendrickson also told 6 News the lack of meeting and recreational spaces has been a popular concern on community surveys, and the township hopes this proposal will fulfill that need. There will be a listening session on Tuesday, June 10th, at the Central Park Pavilion, where people can learn more about the proposal and ask questions. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
