Nearly 2,000 commercial vehicles stopped during chain enforcement: CSP
DENVER (KDVR) — Nearly 2,000 commercial motor vehicles were contacted during a 14-week multi-agency chain law enforcement operation, according to the Colorado State Patrol. CSP released details of the operation — which ended earlier this week — on Friday. Chain laws are in effect in Colorado from Sept. 1 through May 31. DHS lists these CO areas as 'sanctuary jurisdictions' Multiple agencies took part in the operation, including the CSP, the Clear Creek County Sheriff's Office, the Idaho Springs Police Department, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, the Lakewood Police Department, the Parachute Police Department and the Vail Police Department. 'We commend the efforts of all participating agencies who worked together to ensure the safety of our mountain corridors through this enforcement season. Their ongoing partnership and commitment to public safety continue to make a difference on Colorado roadways,' the CSP said in a news release. According to the CSP, the chain law enforcement operation resulted in: 852 passenger vehicle contacts 450 passenger vehicle speeding citations 737 passenger vehicle citations 1,997 commercial vehicle contacts 129 commercial vehicle 'must carry' citations According to the CSP, in Colorado, a commercial vehicle with a gross combination weight rating of 16,001 pounds or more must carry four snow chains or 'adequate traction devices' on it from Sept. 1 to May 31 if they are traveling on: Interstate 70 west of milepost 259 (Morrison) Colorado Highway 9 milepost 63 to milepost 97 (Frisco to Fairplay) Route 40 west of milepost 256 (Empire) U.S. Route 50 west of milepost 225 (Salida) U.S. Route 160 west of MP 250 (Morrison) U.S. Route 550 from milepost 0 to 130 (State line south of Durango to Montrose) New barbeque joint opening in place of shuttered AJ's Pit Bar-B-Q Passenger vehicles also must have adequate tires and chains 'when weather conditions warrant,' according to the Colorado Department of Transportation. CDOT said it will implement traction law for passenger vehicles during winter storms or 'when conditions require,' noting that it can enforce both vehicle traction and chain laws 'on any state highway.' Motorists who drive with inadequate chains and/or tires when a traction or chain law is in effect can receive a fine in excess of $130, according to CDOT, which said a motorist could also end up being fined more than $650 if they were to block a roadway due to inadequate equipment when the laws are in effect. Semi crash in I-25 construction zone in Northern Colorado led to extended closure, Construction will continue for 3 more years
A semi crashed into a bridge on Thursday morning, causing both directions of Interstate 25 to shut down in Northern Colorado for all of the morning and the early part of the afternoon. The crash happened in a stretch of the interstate that has been undergoing expansion construction. The Colorado Department of Transportation confirms crashes in the construction zone have been on the rise. The interstate fully reopened at approximately 3 p.m. CDOT has been working to expand both north and southbound lanes from Dacono through Fort Collins for years now. The project has completed work between Loveland and Fort Collins and is now focused on the stretches south of Loveland. CDOT's Jared Fiel said the construction zones between Loveland and Fort Collins also saw a spike in crashes during that work, however the rates dropped quickly after construction completed. While unable to confirm what caused Thursday morning's crash, Fiel said a majority of the collisions taking place in the construction zones are connected to excessive speeds. "We really need people to be aware this is a construction zone," Fiel said. While some may say the lanes appear to be smaller in the construction zones, Fiel said that is not the case. He said the cement barriers being closer to the lanes creates an optical illusion of a smaller lane, and leaves less margin for error. "Those lanes are just as wide as every other lane, it just appears tighter because the barrier is close," Fiel said. "It's nerve racking. You have to pay attention. You got to be on your toes, you know," said Max Salen, a truck driver passing through Colorado. Salen was transporting his truckload from Canada to Kansas. In his trek through Colorado he was instructed to avoid a portion of I-25 through Northern Colorado. "I have a wide load, I don't know what is going on," Salen said. When he heard about the construction and the Thursday morning crash, he said it did not surprise him too much that the area was more dangerous than other stretches. "It is a whole thing. Even my permit is telling me to go around all that stuff," Salen said. Salen said it is more challenging to navigate construction zones in such large trucks, especially when other drivers in smaller vehicles are speeding and cutting trucks off. "I'm always looking for someone stupid and to cut by you. It comes with the job," Salen said. "Oh yeah. Guys will whip around you. They don't care. But you have to account for that." Construction in the area isn't expected to be completed until 2028. Fiel said they have installed rumble strips to notify drivers they are entering work zones. CDOT is also in the testing phase of introducing speed cameras in the construction zones which would eventually issue citations to drivers for exceeding construction zone speed limits. "We know this eventually is going to make tings safer. What we need right now is for people to be paying attention, especially in a work zone," Fiel said.

Traffic backed up on I-225 southbound in Aurora due to vehicle fire
DENVER (KDVR) — Traffic was backed up on Interstate 225 Thursday morning as the southbound lanes were closed due to a fire. The Colorado Department of Transportation said I-225 was closed due to a vehicle fire between Colfax Avenue and 6th Avenue in Aurora. Several lanes have since reopened. See the latest traffic conditions in Denver on FOX31 CDOT cameras showed traffic backups on the interstate and on-ramps. Around 10:40 a.m., the department said all but one lane had reopened. Traffic still appeared to be delayed in the area, but was moving much smoother. According to CDOT's online tool COtrip, drivers should expect delays in the area. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Safety protocols have been updated for I-70 through Glenwood Canyon
GARFIELD COUNTY, Colo. (KREX) – After the 2020 Grizzly Creek Fire and years of mudslides, the Colorado Department of Transportation and other agencies have teamed up to address issues on U.S. Interstate 70 through Glenwood Canyon. CDOT said there has been a reduced threat level compared to previous years based on burn scar recovery and debris flow potential. This improvement comes after CDOT – along with the U.S. Forest Service, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the U.S. Geological Survey – worked ahead of the summer season to update safety protocols for motorists and crews. Officials believe normal conditions will be in store for Glenwood Canyon for this summer. The safety protocols include flash flood watches. CDOT crews will conduct standard traffic control measures at all closure points and will monitor conditions in the canyon by using cameras and personnel on the ground. For flash flood warnings, crews will monitor conditions and keep I-70 open – along with rest areas and recreation paths – if it is safe, CDOT said.
