Women facing digital harassment: CERT
In the context of the recent murder of a TikToker, Pakistan's National Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) has issued an advisory, noting that women continue to face persistent threats such as image-based abuse and digital harassment in Pakistan. The advisory — titled Safe, Diligent, and Responsible Usage of Social Media — has painted a stark picture of the digital threat landscape in Pakistan, highlighting risks that affect millions particularly children, women, and elderly users — who are increasingly vulnerable to exploitation, misinformation, emotional manipulation, and online abuse. CERT has noted that these threats are compounded by inadequate reporting channels and low digital literacy, while flagging a worrying increase in cyber incidents affecting children, including exposure to explicit content and online grooming. According to the advisory, platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp, and Facebook dominate the digital space, especially among youth, providing avenues for expression, education, and activism. "However, these platforms are also fertile ground for disinformation campaigns, phishing scams, impersonation, harassment, and algorithm driven psychological manipulation." A young TikToker, Sana Yousuf, was tragically shot dead in the federal capital on June 2. The suspect, 22-year-old Umar Hayat — also a social media content creator — allegedly killed Sana after she rejected his offer of friendship. Sana Yousuf, 17, had more than one million followers on social media, The advisory said manipulation of user emotions through provocative content and the constant comparison promoted by curated online lives has also contributed to increasing stress and mental health issues.

10 days later, no sign of missing Kansas woman
COWLEY COUNTY, Kan. (KSNW) — It's been 10 days since deputies found the vehicle of 81-year-old Jerry McConnell in a remote part of Cowley County—and still, there's no trace of the missing Overland Park woman. McConnell was reported missing on May 14, prompting a Silver Alert. Surveillance footage showed her car traveling west into Cowley County the next evening. Authorities later located the vehicle on May 20, abandoned on private property near the 4000 block of 327th Road. The discovery triggered a multi-agency search that has since grown to include local deputies, CERT volunteers, the Kansas Highway Patrol, canine units, and even dive teams from Augusta Fire and Rescue. Despite daily efforts—both on the ground and by air—searchers have uncovered no new leads. 'We are extremely grateful for the tireless efforts of all those who participated in the search,' Cowley County Sheriff David Falletti said in a news release. 'The collaboration among law enforcement, volunteers, and community members has been outstanding.' Indecent liberties case against Wichitan to continue Authorities are asking nearby residents to check wells, outbuildings, and wooded areas for signs of McConnell. The sheriff said the search remains active and unresolved. Anyone with information is asked to contact Lieutenant Tommy Scott at the Cowley County Sheriff's Office at 620-221-5444. CERT issues advisory after massive data theft
Passwords and sensitive information of over 180 million users from across the world have been stolen. This global data leak has affected users of major companies including Google, Facebook, and Apple. According to an advisory issued by Pakistan's National Cyber Emergency Response Team (CERT), data from platforms such as Instagram, Snapchat, and even government portals has been stolen and information from user accounts has been compromised across the globe. CERT advised Pakistani users to immediately change their account passwords as the data leak poses risks of identity theft, account hacking, and cyberattacks. "Government institutions and financial accounts may also be at risk. Even systems of the government and sensitive agencies could be endangered," the advisory said. It urged users to enable two-factor authentication on their accounts. Sensitive information has been stolen and stored in databases, which could lead to automated attacks. CERT asked users to utilize a password manager. It further advised that passwords should never be stored in emails or unsecured files and that antivirus and security software should be updated regularly. "Users are also advised to monitor unusual login activity, and institutions should immediately take steps to notify affected users. Failure to act promptly could endanger the national digital infrastructure," the CERT advisory added.

First Monroe County Deaf CERT Program class graduates, equipped to assist in local disasters
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — In the face of disasters including fires and snowstorms, many folks expect first responders to be readily available and answer the call. But, if they're delayed due to another emergency, Community Emergency Responder Training (CERT) teams are expected to step in and assist. The program was founded in California in the 1980s but has since made its way to Rochester. On Wednesday, the 39th class graduated at the Monroe Community College Public Safety Training Facility on Scottsville Road. However, this class was geared to empower specific members of our community: those who are deaf or hard of hearing. Battalion Chief for the Rochester Fire Department Joe Luna shared his excitement for the new partnership between RIT's National Technical Institute for the Deaf and Monroe County's CERT program. 'It's great to have them as resources to help the community, to help in setting up shelters or in potential large snow events in the future, things along those lines,' Luna said. Before graduating, the class was expected to complete a final evolution, which is a disaster simulation in which they're required to put all they've learned into action. Luna explained what students learn over the course of nine weeks. 'It's a lot of medical training, some basic ideas behind psychology, fire safety, search and rescue techniques,' Luna said. CERT Team Leader for Monroe County's 39th class Matthew Parsley, who is hard of hearing, explained how he sees this partnership as an asset to the community. 'The Rochester community has the largest per capita deaf population, so it's a real gain to have a team that's designed to communicate directly with folks using American Sign Language (ASL),' Parsley said. The Rochester Fire Department plans to hold future CERT trainings in the future, including classes for those who are not hard-of-hearing. More information on how to get involved can be found here.
