IBERIA PARISH, La. () — According to Iberia Parish President Larry Richard, trash dumping is becoming a major issue across the parish. He says recent occurrences are having him wanting to make an example out of those responsible. 'It's a major issue and we are looking to address it to the fullest,' said Richard. 'We have to get to a point where people are going to realize that they're dumping trash in Iberia parish, and they get caught. There will be a penalty for it.' On March 28, addressed the issue on after a large amount of trash was found dumped on the side of the road in the parish. Richard says acts like this are unacceptable and brings down the value of the community. Offenders can face serious consequences including fines, criminal charges and jailtime. While officials rely on people calling in to report the dumping, they are actively working with parish agencies to tackle the issue firsthand. 'So, we're trying to work as much as we can, not only with the public works department, with waste connection, who actually have our contract to pick up bulky waste, but also with the sheriff department and with the district attorney's office, because we have a lot of things, it takes a lot to police.
