MCC Students Claim First Place at Cybersecurity Competition

WACO, Texas (FOX 44) — A team of students from McLennan Community College (MCC) has emerged victorious in the Cybersecurity Interdisciplinary Incident Response Competition (CIIRC), after challenging teams to design real-world simulations centered around cyber crisis scenarios. The intense, three-day event saw MCC's team go head-to-head with competitors from top universities, including Baylor University and Texas A&M. Students were tasked with responding to a simulated cyberattack from multiple perspectives, including technical, legal, business, and public relations. Teams were required to analyze security breaches, develop recovery strategies, assess financial and reputational risks, manage press conferences, and report to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) according to regulatory standards. Team coach Joshua Sullwold credited the team's success to effective communication, 'Having an area where they can express their interest and supporting that interest as best you can was key.' For Christopher Morris, associate professor of Communication Information Systems at MCC, this victory holds significant importance, 'It lets people know that community colleges are colleges that they can compete with, alongside the major schools in the area. There's often a stigma around community colleges, but competing at a high level and achieving success like this helps to break that stereotype and put us on the map.' Morris also noted the pride this accomplishment instills in students, reinforcing the value of their hard work and dedication. The success is expected to inspire continued growth in the college's business and technology programs. As the academic year progresses, professors in the business and technology departments are committed to motivating students and further developing MCC's cybersecurity program to continue building on this success.
