New Delhi: China has secured the top position in nuclear energy, surpassing all countries in the world. Currently, China has the highest number of nuclear units in the world, allowing it to produce the most energy globally. Until now, the USA and France dominated the nuclear energy sector. According to a report released by the China Nuclear Energy Administration (CNEA) on Sunday, 27 April 2025 for the first time, China has become the world's leader in terms of the overall scale of nuclear energy. The report states, 'Currently, there are 102 nuclear energy units in China, with a total installed capacity of 113 million kilowatts, which includes those that are operational, under construction, and approved for construction. In terms of the total scale of nuclear energy, China has, for the first time, become the world's leading nuclear energy producer.' The association mentioned that currently, there are 28 nuclear energy units under construction in China, with a total capacity of 33.65 million kilowatts. China is continuously increasing its nuclear power capacity and has been in the first place in the world in terms of the capacity of power units under construction for 18 consecutive years. The report mentioned, 'China has 58 commercially operating nuclear power units, with a total installed capacity of 60.96 million kilowatts. Additionally, our country's nuclear power production is continuously increasing.' Currently, 32 countries in the world are operating nuclear power plants. These countries generate approximately one-tenth of the world's electricity from nuclear energy. Most of these are located in Europe, North America, and East Asia. So far, the United States has been the largest producer of nuclear energy, while France ranks second. However, it produces about 70% of its total electricity from nuclear energy. Some countries used to operate nuclear reactors, but currently, they do not have any nuclear power plants in operation. Among them, Italy shut down all its nuclear stations by 1990. Lithuania closed its nuclear station in 2009 as it was using a dangerous RBMK reactor. Kazakhstan abolished nuclear power in 1999 but is possibly planning to restart it under a referendum by 2035.
