RTÉ appoints new Chief Risk and Compliance Officer

RTÉ has announced the appointment of a new Chief Risk and Compliance Officer (CRCO). Eleanor O'Shaughnessy is to take on the position at the national broadcaster following a public competition. The appointment of a Chief Risk Officer and a Chief Compliance Officer were among the key recommendations in the Expert Advisory Committee's Independent Review of Governance and Culture at RTÉ. The two roles have been amalgamated into the single position of CRCO. The review, which had been commissioned by the Government, identified weaknesses in risk management and internal controls for the crisis at the broadcaster. Ms O'Shaughnessy, who is currently the Director of Risk and Compliance with Primark, has over 20 years of experience in risk management and compliance. She previously held senior risk management roles with Paddy Power Betfair/Flutter Entertainment Group, Deutsche Bank London, and as a consultant with KPMG Dublin, Accenture London and Deloitte London. As CRCO, Ms O'Shaughnessy will also be a member of RTÉ's leadership team. In her new role, she will be responsible for "developing and implementing a comprehensive risk management and compliance framework to ensure RTÉ operates within legal and regulatory requirements while maintaining the highest standards of integrity and ethical conduct". The broadcaster said she will lead RTÉ's risk management and compliance functions, establishing effective systems and frameworks for the identification, management, mitigation, monitoring, reporting, and escalation of risk and compliance matters to RTÉ's leadership team and the RTÉ Board. In a statement, the broadcaster said Ms O'Shaughnessy's extensive expertise and leadership skills "will significantly contribute to strengthening RTÉ's risk and compliance culture, helping, along with the Leadership Team, to ensure robust governance, and supporting RTÉ's strategic objectives". Ms O'Shaughnessy holds a Masters Degree from Michael Smurfit Graduate School of Business, and a Bachelor of Commerce with French from University College Dublin. She will join RTÉ later this summer.
