Kamindu Mendis catch hangover continues onto Sunday: ‘When running didn't think would reach it…but have to have belief'

Superlatives are still raining in for Kamindu Mendis who took what could be a contender for the catch of the IPL 2025 to put the brakes on Dewald Brevis in Friday's SRH-CSK game. In a gleeful debrief of the catch that sent back Brevis threatening to explode more than he already had, the Sri Lankan ambidextrous cricketer said he wasn't quite sure he would reach the ball but he always had the belief and intent to go for every 50-50 chance. Chepauk, forever focussed on the centre square where MS Dhoni either bats or keeps, witnessed an outfield delight as Mendis pulled off his magical moment. His teammates revelled in the success that eventually helped the Hyderabad team win at Chennai HQ for the first time in many years. 'Magnificent' – was how Ishan Kishan described it to the official IPL website. Jaidev Unadkat put it best, saying, 'HOW….but wow.' Travis Head didn't think words could capture the capture where Mendis dived to his left after running, in the deep and saved a boundary in the process as Brevis was accelerating fiercely and putting SRH under the pump. 'Describing the catch won't do it justice,' Head said. Only a catch like that could've stopped that cameo from Brevis! 🤯 Kamindu Mendis, take a bow 🙇‍ #CSK 119/6 after 14 overs. Updates ▶ #TATAIPL | #CSKvSRH | @SunRisers — IndianPremierLeague (@IPL) April 25, 2025 The commentator's immediate words had been 'outstanding, which is his weak side we will never know!' Just as Mendis left everyone watching shaken and stirred and rolled his scalp on his palms in celebration. Describing his catch, Mendis said, 'When I'm running I thought I wouldn't even reach it. Somehow I tried and you have to have sone belief in you. So I went for it. Brevis was batting really well in these tough conditions so we needed a breakthrough. I just believed that I can take the catch. It gave us good energy in the field as well,' he said. Harshal Patel, who first started the weekend hangover that continues unto Sunday after KKR game got rained off, was candid after having bowled a fairly lousy delivery that Brevis swung at. 'I had zero expectations from that ball and was hoping it wouldn't go for a six. And it ended up being a wicket which was like ….I've seen a lot of great catches on the field but this was probably one of my top 3.' Always trust your instincts ft. Kamindu 💯 Kamindu Mendis | Harshal Patel | #PlayWithFire | #CSKvSRH | #TATAIPL2025 — SunRisers Hyderabad (@SunRisers) April 26, 2025 The catch was so stunning – like flying catches tend to be – it cast a phantom air-shadow. Of the four shadows cast in Twilight by the light towers, one was right when Mendis took off for his dive to left and a hazy shadow starting far from his feet. Mendis himself was all heart and commitment. 'Whenever I field at midwicket and long on, I'm anticipating (a wicket) every ball. You just need to anticipate (a wicket) every ball in T20. So you have to take 50-50, half chances. You have to have courage to go for the catch. These small things are a good contribution for the game,' he said.

Virender Sehwag Slams Ravindra Jadeja After SRH Loss: 'Strike Rate Bekaar Hai Unka...'

Last Updated: Chennai Super Kings slumped to a fourth successive home defeat in IPL 2025 and remain rooted at the bottom of the points table. Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag has said that it felt like the Chennai Super Kings just want to finish the match and go back home, showing no urge to stay on the wicket and grind for runs, adding that Ravindra Jadeja, with a below-par strike rate should look to go slow and score runs rather than perish early. Chennai slumped to a fourth successive home defeat in IPL 2025 and remain rooted at the bottom of the points table. Sehwag said that Jadeja should have held one end, considering the tough batting conditions, which would have permitted more batters to play their natural game. 'Wasn't I saying that I feel like going home midway through the tournament. CSK's batters are also perhaps thinking that way. Their batters are wondering when they will get back home," Sehwag said while speaking on Cricbuzz. ' #CSK का mindless बल्लेबाज़ी देखकर हूं हैरान'सुनिए @VirenderSehwag और @RohanGava9 की चर्चा, Cricbuzz Live हिन्दी पर #CSKvSRH #IPL2025 #MSDhoni — Cricbuzz (@cricbuzz) April 26, 2025 'When will the tournament end? At least one of them should have taken responsibility. Jadeja has got a useless strike rate, but at least try to stay out there till the 15th or 18th over," Sehwag said. Jadeja has a strike rate of 125.76 after nine matches in IPL 2025, less than his career SR of 129.56. Chennai had to shake up their batting order after choosing to drop Rachin Ravindra from the playing XI. The vacancy at the top was filled by Ayush Mhatre, leaving Chennai in search of a No. 3 batter yet again. For the Hyderabad contest, Chennai tried out a left-field option in the form of Sam Curran. 'I can't understand what Sam Curran is doing at No.3 in this line-up. He has played up the order for sure, he has batted No.4 in ILT20 and he has played that role intelligently. But, in this line-up, when you have Brevis, play him at No.3," Sehwag said. 'Then Dube can come in next, followed by Jadeja, Sam Curran and Deepak Hooda. They are missing Ruturaj Gaikwad in this line-up, he used to consistently make runs in Chennai," Sehwag added.

Kavya Marans Emotional Rollercoaster Moments Steal Spotlight In SRH vs CSK Clash

Sunrisers Hyderabad kept their IPL 2025 playoff hopes alive with a crucial five-wicket victory over Chennai Super Kings on Friday. The defeat has virtually knocked CSK out of the tournament, leaving their campaign hanging by a thread with just a few games remaining. Asked to bat first, Chennai Super Kings failed to find rhythm and were bowled out for a modest 154 runs. In response, SRH executed a measured chase, reaching 155/5 in 18.4 overs with eight balls to spare. Ishan Kishan set the tone at the top with a solid 44, while Kamindu Mendis remained calm under pressure to finish unbeaten on 32. Nitish Reddy also chipped in with a valuable 19, helping SRH seal a much-needed win that keeps them in playoff contention, at least mathematically as the league phase nears its conclusion. Adding to the drama of the night was Hyderabad's first-ever win over CSK in Chennai, breaking what many have called the Super Kings' 'fortress' at Chepauk. But what truly caught the internet's attention were the emotional reactions of SRH owner Kavya Maran, whose expressions during the match quickly went viral. One particular moment that lit up social media came in the 16th over, when Noor Ahmad overstepped and gave Kamindu Mendis a free hit opportunity. However, Mendis failed to capitalize, playing a dot ball, a moment that was attributed to MS Dhoni's tactical brilliance, with many believing it was Dhoni's influence behind Noor sticking to the plan. Later, when SRH finally clinched the win after a series of losses, her emotional and joyful reaction brought a wave of smiles across the internet, symbolizing the rollercoaster of emotions that fans and franchise owners alike go through in the IPL.

MS Dhoni recalls giving Sunil Gavaskar autograph in IPL 2023: Special moment

MS Dhoni recently went down memory lane and fondly recalled giving an autograph to the legendary Sunil Gavaskar. The memorable moment took place during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, when Chennai Super Kings (CSK) were playing their last game of the season at the iconic MA Chidambaram CSK was taking a lap of honour, Gavaskar briefly interrupted Dhoni to request an autograph. Dhoni obliged, signing Gavaskar's shirt — a moment that quickly became iconic. Later, Gavaskar revealed that the shirt was safely preserved at his very happy with what I've been doing on and off the field. I've made mistakes too, but more often than not, I've tried to do the right things. So, his appreciation feels like a stamp of approval—something very close to my heart. 'When he asked for an autograph, my immediate reaction was, 'Okay, give the autograph.' It was a special moment,' Dhoni said in a video on Star Sports."He is the great of the game." #MSDhoni praises #SunilGavaskar's influence on the game and opens up about their personal connection #IPLonJioStar #CSKvSRH | 25th APR, FRI, 6:30 PM | LIVE on Star Sports 1, Star Sports 1 Hindi & JioHotstar Star Sports (@StarSportsIndia) April 25, 2025Dhoni lauded Gavaskar for facing the fiery West Indies pace bowling attack, which had Malcolm Marshall, Joel Garner, Andy Roberts and others, with courage and determination. Gavaskar was also the first ever batter to score 10,000 runs in Test a great of the game. Since I started playing cricket, there have been a few iconic names from that era and before, and Sunny bhai has always been one of them - especially for the way he played against the West Indian fast bowling unit. It wasn't just one or two fast bowlers; they had an entire pace attack, and the way he performed against them was remarkable,' Dhoni also emerged as one of the greats of Indian cricket. Under him, India won the Men's T20 World Cup 2007, Men's ODI World Cup 2011 and Champions Trophy 2013.
