CT Ravi links communal murders to cow slaughter, 'love jihad'

MANGALURU: BJP MLC CT Ravi has urged the state government to curb cow slaughter and 'love jihad' if it wants to address the root cause of communal murders in Dakshina Kannada. Speaking to reporters here on Saturday, Ravi said thousands of families have lost peace because of cattle theft, cow slaughter and 'love jihad', and if this ecosystem is destroyed, the communal friction will stop. He also stressed the need to put an end to illegal sand mining, gambling and drug peddling, stating that it funds the communal forces. Ravi said not to view the murders in DK as separate incidents, but as an action for a reaction. 'If action stops, then there won't be a reaction,' he said. Further, he said there should be a public debate on removing contents in religious texts that lead to hatred and terrorism, stating that they also play a role in religious intolerance. He said that not only the Union and state governments, but also society should take responsibility in this matter. 'If such contents are removed, then peace will prevail not just in the state, but in the entire world,' he said. He objected to the Congress government in the state not compensating the kin of Suhas Shetty, stating that he was a rowdy sheeter and further questioned why the kin of Kabeer, a cattle thief who was killed in the 2014 ANF encounter, was compensated. When asked why the BJP did not condemn Ashraf and Abdul Rahiman's murder, he said he was not aware of it and added that the civil society will not accept any murder. Ravi sought to know whether Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and his cabinet colleagues had secretly invested in RCB, which prompted them to celebrate its victory, resulting in the death of 11 persons. 'RCB is a franchise. It is a cocktail-like arrangement. How many players from Karnataka did it consist, whether its owner is a Kannaniga,' he asked.

Undeclared emergency in Karnataka, says BJP MLC CT Ravi

BENGALURU: BJP MLC CT Ravi said on Wednesday Congress has not learnt any lessons from the emergency and is trying to threaten opposition leaders through an 'undeclared emergency' in Karnataka. The BJP leader said they will not be cowed down by such intimidations and will face them. Ravi said many ministers were behaving like 'super Home Ministers' in their districts and politically motivated cases were registered against opposition leaders. Leader of Opposition in the Council Chalavadi Narayanswamy was locked up in a government guest house in Kalaburgi district for several hours, but no action was taken against those responsible for it, he said, adding that the party MLC N Ravi Kumar was questioned for five hours in a police station, even after he had expressed regrets for his remarks about the Kalaburgi DC. The BJP leader said the law and order situation is deteriorated. Even police records show an increase in crimes and corruption is the only achievement of ministers. Terming it an anti-people government, the BJP leader said Kalaburgi police registered a case of disturbing peace when people expressed their anger against Pakistan by throwing its flag on a road after terrorists killed tourists in Pahalgam. 'Whose peace was disturbed and who was hurt?' Ravi asked. He also asked the government what message it is giving by taking such actions. He said the police commissioner in Kalaburgi should not behave like a Pakistani police. Booking a case against those who threw the Pakistani flag on the road sends a wrong message, he said. He urged the government to withdraw the case. He also slammed the government for failing to maintain law and order in Dakshina Kannada and targeting those working for people.

SC halts trial against Karnataka MLC over controversial council speech

New Delhi, May 19 (UNI) In a development involving legislative privilege and freedom of speech within elected bodies, the Supreme Court on Monday stayed the trial proceedings against CT Ravi, member of the Karnataka legislative council, who is facing criminal charges over an allegedly derogatory speech made on the council floor in December 2024. A bench comprising Justice MM Sundresh and Justice Rajesh Bindal was hearing Ravi's appeal against a Karnataka High Court order that had declined to quash the FIR registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, for offences under Section 75 (sexual harassment) and Section 79 (outraging the modesty of a woman). The charges stem from a complaint lodged by Congress legislator Laxmi Hebbalkar, alleging Ravi used offensive language during a session of the legislative council held in Belagavi. While issuing notice in the case, the Supreme Court stayed the ongoing trial court proceedings, offering interim protection to the BJP leader. Ravi's counsel argued that the alleged remarks were made in the course of legislative proceedings, and thus, he is entitled to constitutional immunity. The defense invoked Article 194 of the Constitution, which extends legislative privileges including freedom of speech to state legislators. They also cited, Article 105(1): Ensures freedom of speech in Parliament (also extended to state legislatures via Article 194). Article 105(2) / 194(2) provides immunity from court proceedings for anything said or votes cast in the House. Article 122(1) prevents courts from examining the validity of parliamentary procedures on procedural grounds. Section 135A of the CPC restricts arrest of members in civil cases during sessions and up to 40 days post-session. However, prior to this, the Karnataka high court rejected Ravi's petition. Justice M. Nagaprasanna, in a strongly worded judgment, had held, 'Alleged words spoken, if spoken, or gesture made, if made, against the woman complainant, certainly outrage her modesty. It cannot have any nexus to the functioning or transaction of the House no nexus, no privilege. Petition dismissed.' Ravi had been arrested on December 19, 2024, in connection with the incident. However, following his plea before the High Court, he was promptly granted bail. He subsequently approached the Supreme Court seeking the quashing of the proceedings. The matter will now be decided after a detailed hearing on the scope of legislative immunity and privileges vis-à-vis criminal charges for misconduct within the House. CT Ravi was represented by senior advocate Manan Kumar Mishra, along with advocate-on-record Dr. Ram Sankar. UNI SNG PRS

Supreme Court Relief For BJP's CT Ravi Over Remark About Woman Minister

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday stayed trial proceedings against Karnataka BJP MLC CT Ravi, who faced criminal charges for sexist comments targeting Congress leader Laxmi Hebbalkar inside the Council building in December last year. A bench of Justice MM Sundresh and Justice Rajesh Bindal heard a challenge to a Karnataka High Court that had refused to quash the cash against Mr Ravi, who had been charged under Section 75 (to do with sexual harassment) and Section 79 (outraging the modesty of a woman) under the new criminal laws. The main point argued by Mr Ravi this afternoon was that his statements were made during the proceedings in the Legislative Council and, therefore, he had immunity granted to Members of Parliament while the House is in session. READ | BJP's CT Ravi Detained For Remarks Against Woman Minister Mr Ravi was arrested on December 20, 2024, and granted bail hours later. "Release him immediately... wherever he is," the High Court said, noting he had not been served notice before his arrest. The protocol states the cops should have done so before questioning and detaining him over a complaint filed by Ms Hebbalkar, the Women and Child Development Minister. "... a false case was filed against me and they (the Congress) treated me like a terrorist. Now let them introspect (on) what have they done. This is a win for the truth... the order is a clear message that we must all follow the law. There was no proof (but still) I was arrested," Mr Ravi had said. Mr Ravi was arrested following a complaint by Ms Hebbalkar - that he used objectionable language targeting her on the House; charges of sexual harassment and using insulting gestures amounting to sexual harassment were filed under the new criminal law, the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita. According to Ms Hebbalkar, who had participated in a protest against the "Ambedkar is the fashion" remark by Home Minister Amit Shah, she was "sitting quietly" when Mr Ravi called Congress MP Rahul Gandhi a "drug addict". "In response I asked, 'Even you have been in accidents... does that make you a murder?'," she said, alleging the response contained derogatory language. The arrest triggered a predictable furious exchange between the two parties, with dramatic scenes of shoving and jostling between their leaders doing the rounds on social media. Reacting to the controversy, another BJP leader, R Ashoka, the Leader of the Opposition, said: "This is nothing but 'goondagiri'. CT Ravi was assaulted on the floor of the House (but) the Chairperson ruled no such incident took place. We don't know if a law-and-order system exists... we will protest." Chief Minister Siddaramaiah led the fightback, slamming the BJP for "supporting the use of derogatory language towards women". "If it is false CT Ravi used vulgar language then why was he arrested? Normally, women cannot file false complaints about such allegations. This is a crime."
