USS Franklin veterans reunite to honor 80th anniversary of bombing
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – March 19th marks 80 years since the bombing of the USS Franklin off the coast of Japan during World War II.
Veterans of the USS Franklin and their families will gather on its sister ship, USS Yorktown, at Patriots Point for a memorial ceremony.
The Franklin was a CV-13 Essex Class warship stationed in the Pacific Theater. It received catastrophic damage but did not sink on the morning of March 19th.
An enemy plane dropped two bombs, striking the ship, and killing more than 800 individuals and leaving nearly 500 wounded. Since the battle, the survivors have held reunions to honor those lost and their commitment to the ship.
The Yorktown was also in the Pacific Theatre of World War II and features several tributes to the USS Franklin.
The memorial ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
