Where We Are Going Today: ‘Cafe Boulud' – French restaurant in Riyadh
Riyadh's Cafe Boulud, a French restaurant founded by chef Daniel Boulud, offers a culinary performance as refined as its marble interiors and softly lit atmosphere. From the moment you're seated, you're in for a journey, not just a meal. The tasting menu is an elegant parade of flavors, beautifully plated and rich with French technique. Each course is executed with precision, but it's the taste that truly stuns. The raviolo, for example, with its herbaceous ricotta filling and a delicate touch of pine nut and parmesan, felt both comforting and complex. The wagyu striploin, served with panisse, salsify, and a black pepper jus, was a standout, tender and deeply flavorful. Even the lighter dishes, like the hamachi with horseradish and pistachio, were layered and bright. Of course, this level of dining comes with a high price tag. But when you consider the attention to detail, the ambiance, and the impeccable service, it feels justified. You're not just paying for food, you're paying for artistry. This is the kind of place you visit for a special occasion, or when you want to be reminded that food can be more than a meal, it can be an experience. Meet Michelin star chef Daniel Boulud's wife, Katherine Boulud: from organising a Henry Kissinger fundraiser to working at her husband's New York restaurant Daniel, and her passion for French cuisine
Long before Katherine Gage Boulud met her husband, Michelin star chef Daniel Boulud, she developed a deep love for food, all thanks to her mother. But Katherine is much more than just a chef's wife. Raised in New York, she first pursued a career in politics – working with the likes of Henry Kissinger, the late former US secretary of state – before discovering her own passion for cooking and working for her now-husband at the famed Cafe Boulud as well as his flagship restaurant, Daniel. So what else is there to know about Katherine Gage Boulud, one-half of the culinary power couple behind some of the world's most famous restaurants She was raised in New York Katherine Boulud grew up in New York. She says her mother often cooked classic dishes but always added a creative twist, whether for family dinners or school lunches. 'The rules regarding food in our house were simple: you must try everything at least once, and if you don't like it, you don't have to try it again for a year! Pretty fair,' she shared in her now-inactive blog. 'We went out to eat often as well, which developed an early affinity for international cuisine of nearly every variety.' Her family's tradition of leaving the access of the city for the tranquillity of the Adirondack Mountains every August encouraged Katherine to explore cooking from a young age. By the time she was 17, she had developed a strong foundation in the kitchen. She initially pursued a career in politics Katherine Boulud once organised a fundraiser for Henry Kissinger. McFarland's ultimately unsuccessful run for the Republican Senate nomination in New York – that she returned to the kitchen, this time professionally. When visiting family in Palm Beach, Florida, Katherine enrolled at the Florida Culinary Institute, where she fell in love with cooking. To complement her studies and learn the fundamentals of French fine dining, she began working at Café Boulud, the cafe owned by Boulud, already a celebrated chef and restaurateur. Katherine went on to work for her future husband for another three and a half years, spending time in the catering division of Daniel before fully transitioning to the Michelin-starred restaurant itself.
