Hundreds step out for women's Orange Walk through Glasgow as major roads sealed off

Donning large hats, colourful frocks and heels, around 500 members of the Ladies Orange Association of Scotland ​m​ade their way through the city centre​ today, along with Orange bands. Marchers then made their through Nelson Mandela Place before continuing along West George Street. One lady donned a bright purple dress and matching hat, as she marched along holding up a large flag with bright white gloves. Two others wore matching blue outfits, complete with bright orange fascinators - complimenting their orange sashes. Blustery conditions saw some ladies, having to hold on to their hats - to stop them from blowing off their heads. Roads were shut to traffic during the parade, which paused in George Square ​f​or a wreath​ to be laid, before heading down George Street, High Street, Castle Street and Cathedral Square. Police were out on force, with one officer pictured walking beside the flute band. The march comes a day after an Irish Republican march took place through the city, commemorating the 1916 Easter Rising. The procession ​was organised by Scottish republican group Cairde na hEireann ​. Around 200 people ​t​ook part in the march​ on Saturday afternoon, accompanied by Irish Republican bands. The Irish republican group, Cairde na hEireann (friends of Ireland), is holding the parade to mark the historic event that took place 109 years ago in 1916. Traffic restrictions will be in place on roads to allow the parade to pass. Read more: The agreed route will start in Shuttle St before going along Ingram St and Queen St, before turning left into St. Vincent Place, St Vincent Street, and heading south on Renfield St, Union St, and Jamaica St, and turning east at Clyde St, and heading along Bridgegate, up Saltmarket, back into Trongate, Albion St, Ingram Street back to Shuttle Street where it will disperse. It is estimated there will be around 200 people taking part in the march, accompanied by Irish Republican bands. Social media posts state there will be guest speakers from Ireland and Palestine and a function afterwards. A post states: 'Please join us as we remember Ireland's Patriotic Dead.' Events are held each year in Glasgow to mark the anniversary of the Easter Rising, when the rebellion against British rule took place during Easter, leading to the execution of several of the movement's leaders.

Following a limousine, the parade will head east along West Regent Street, into Blythswood Square and then down West George Street. They will then pass through Nelson Mandela Place, across Buchanan Street and onto West George Street. Marchers and Orange bands will then head to George Square, where a wreath will be laid. However, with the square currently cordoned off for redevelopment works, the group will be unable to place the wreath under the Cenotaph. Roads affected from 1.45pm Holland Street West Regent Street Blythswood Square West George Street Nelson Mandela Place George Square George Street High Street Castle Street Cathedral Square John Knox Street/Wishart Street After a brief pause here, the procession will continue onto George Street, High Street, Castle Street and Cathedral Square. The group will disperse at John Knox Street and Wishart Street. It is the first large-scale Orange march in the city this year. Last year, around 50,000 Orange Order members took part in events across Scotland at the height of the marching season. Glasgow saw around 15,000 people on one of the busiest days to mark the anniversary of the Battle of the Boyne. The procession has been organised by Scottish republican group Cairde na hEireann to commemorate the 1916 Easter Rising. Around 200 people are expected to take part in the march, accompanied by Irish Republican bands. It has been proposed to start from Shuttle Street in the Merchant City at 2pm.
