A Warm Reception for "Life After Seham" at Its World Premiere in the ACID Section of the Cannes Film Festival
Ali abo deshish Cannes Film Festival hosted the world premiere of "Life After Seham," directed and written by Namir Abdel Messeeh, as part of the ACID section dedicated to supporting independent cinema. The screening was attended by the entire film crew alongside the producers, including Egyptian producers, in an atmosphere filled with appreciation and enthusiasm from both the audience and critics. "Life After Seham" received two awards from Cairo Film Connection sponsors (ART and Ergo) in 2021, as part of the platform's ongoing support for new cinematic voices in the Arab world. This support has led to the production of a remarkable documentary that has captured the attention of Cannes audiences. The 76-minute film marks the second documentary by Namir Abdel Messeeh, the Egyptian director who grew up in France and studied filmmaking at the prestigious La Fémis school. In this work, Abdel Messeeh continues to explore themes of identity, belonging, and memory, offering a deeply human perspective that resonates with viewers. Mohamed Sayed Abdel Rahim, Head of Cairo Industry Days at Cairo International Film Festival, expressed his great happiness at the film's warm reception at its premiere, saying: 'We are extremely proud to see one of Cairo Film Connection's projects achieving such international success and recognition at a festival as prominent as Cannes. The Egyptian pavilion at the Cannes Film Market (Marché du Film) earned top honors, securing the Best Pavilion Design Award in 2025. This coveted recognition highlights Egypt's superior design, dynamic programming, and successful visitor interaction among its global peers. The Egyptian pavilion, jointly organized by the Cairo International Film Festival, El Gouna Film Festival, and the Egyptian Film Export Committee (EFEC), succeeded in providing an integrated experience that reflects a collaborative spirit in orchestrating events which seamlessly blend cinematic promotion with impactful professional outreach to global filmmakers. The President of the Cairo International Film Festival, Hussein Fahmy, expressed his happiness at winning the award, stating: 'This achievement further confirms the excellence the Egyptian pavilion has achieved in the market, as it was designed and its activities organized based on a clear vision aimed at highlighting the diverse Egyptian cinema.' 'We were eager to offer interactive and professional activities that bring together Egyptian and international filmmakers, reflecting a spirit of cooperation and partnership we believe in. This achievement is not just a culmination of our joint efforts, but also a platform to enhance the international presence of Egyptian cinema and support the film industry in Egypt.' He added, 'This achievement further confirms the excellence the Egyptian pavilion has achieved in the market, as it was designed and its activities organized based on a clear vision aimed at highlighting the diverse Egyptian cinema.' The pavilion witnessed a variety of activities, including discussion panels, pitching sessions, and workshops aimed at fostering cinematic cooperation and bolstering regional and international film production. ‘Evil Eye' Makes a Haunting Mark at Cannes, Powered by Cairo Film Festival
The pitch presentation for Evil Eye, the upcoming feature by Iraqi director Yasser Karim, received an enthusiastic reception today at the Fantastic 7 showcase during the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. Representing the Cairo International Film Festival, the film was introduced as part of this prestigious initiative, co-organized by the Cannes Film Market and Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival. Fantastic 7 highlights the future of genre cinema—fantasy, horror, and sci-fi—by spotlighting seven promising projects nominated by seven top global festivals. These projects are pitched to a curated audience of investors, distributors, sales agents, and genre lovers, aiming to foster talent, secure funding, and expand global reach. Critic Mohamed Sayed Abdel Rahim, Director of Cairo Industry Days, opened the presentation, noting that Hot Eye was previously selected as part of CIFF's 45th edition in 2024. Director Yasser Karim and producer Aws Al Lami then took the stage to discuss the film's themes—blending myth and realism in a tale of fear and resistance. Set in southern Iraq, the story follows a young woman's struggle against tradition in a conservative society. Cairo International Film Festival celebrates FIPRESCI's centenary
Ali Abo Deshish _ Pasant Elzaitony Today, the Egyptian Pavilion at Marché du Film, part of the 78th Cannes Film Festival (13–24 May 2025), will host a reception marking the 100th anniversary of the founding of the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI). Just days ago, Cairo International Film Festival and FIPRESCI launched a historic agreement that will result in the publication of a special book on the federation. This book will be the outcome of a research seminar involving members of FIPRESCI and the Egyptian Film Critics Association, addressing a topic of importance to the history of cinema. The seminar will be held as part of the 46th edition of Cairo International Film Festival, scheduled for 12–21 November 2025. The event will also include the presentation of the 'FIPRESCI 100 – Lifetime Achievement Award' to a prominent cinematic figure. Commenting on the collaboration, actor Hussein Fahmy, President of Cairo International Film Festival, said: 'We at Cairo International Film Festival are proud to be part of FIPRESCI's centenary celebrations and to strengthen our cooperation with the federation at this historic moment. We believe film criticism is a fundamental partner in the industry's development, and our role as a festival goes beyond screening films to include supporting cultural dialogue and enhancing artistic standards. This partnership is a step forward in boosting the status of Egyptian and Arab cinema on the global map and in opening broader horizons for young talents and creatives.'
