"This is like Newsom suing Trump over tariffs — the guy who has done so much to destroy business wants to pretend now he's pro-business?" California residents can now purchase generic Narcan for $24 via state prescription site
Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Monday that California residents can now buy naloxone, commonly known as Narcan, for $24 through the state's prescription website, CalRx. Naloxone is a medication that blocks the effects of opioids and can quickly reverse an overdose. 'Life-saving medications shouldn't come with a life-altering price tag. CalRx is about making essential drugs like naloxone affordable and accessible for all — not the privileged few,' Newsom said in a statement. Amid rise in overdoses, Los Angeles Unified School District to make naloxone available at all K-12 schools The announcement comes after a program launched last year that made naloxone available to government entities and businesses. The initiative is also a part of Newsom's plan to crack down on opioid use. Similarly, a bill signed into law by Newsom last year may require California workplaces to have naloxone or any similar medication approved by the Food & Drug Administration available in first aid kits by 2028. According to the governor's office, for the first time in California, data through June 2024 showed a decline in synthetic opioid-related overdose deaths from drugs such as fentanyl and tramadol. SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Governor Gavin Newsom announced Tuesday that California is the first state to sell a generic version of overdose reversal drug Narcan directly to residents for $24 per twin pack. Naloxone, more commonly known by the brand name Narcan, is a life-saving medication that blocks the effects of opioids, such as fentanyl, and reverses overdoses. In May 2024, California's CalRx brand began offering over-the-counter naloxone nasal spray in 24 packs to businesses and government organizations. Following Tuesday's announcement, California is now selling twin packs of naloxone HCL 4 mg nasal spray directly to individuals for $24 plus tax and shipping. The cost to residents is 'almost half the standard market price,' the governor's office said. 'CalRx is about making essential drugs like naloxone affordable and accessible for all — not the privileged few,' Gov. Newsom said in a news release. 'California is using our market power as the 5th largest economy in the world to disrupt a billion-dollar industry to save lives.' 'Lifesaving tools': Narcan vending machines roll out in Sonoma County CalRx naloxone can be ordered by individuals or businesses online. Orders can only be shipped to California addresses. California offers generic Narcan twin-pack for $24 to reverse opioid overdoses
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - For $24, Californians can now get a twin-pack of generic Narcan, the opioid overdose-reversal drug. What we know The nasal spray is now available on the CalRx website. The generic drug naloxone can reverse overdose by blocking the effects of opioids. This generic version now available is about half the standard price, Governor Gavin Newsom's office announced on Monday. Officials said a recent study found use of the generic version of the drug has saved the state $6 million. "Life-saving medications shouldn't come with a life-altering price tag. CalRx is about making essential drugs like naloxone affordable and accessible for all — not the privileged few," a statement from Newsom's office read. "California is using our market power as the 5th largest economy in the world to disrupt a billion-dollar industry to save lives…and we're just getting started." According to the news release, California residents and businesses can go to the CalRx website and purchase the drug. Taxes and shipping costs are separate. But officials say this is the most cost-competitive option currently available. CalRx-branded naloxone was first introduced in May 2024. Newsom in 2023 introduced his Master Plan for Tackling the Fentanyl and Opioid Crisis Making naloxone more accessible and reducing and preventing overdoses were major components of that plan. By the numbers Newsom's office said in data through June 2024, the state had, for the first time, shown a decline in synthetic opioid-related overdoses.
