Hard water can cause limescale to build up in your washing machine, leading to unpleasant odours, reduced efficiency, and costly repairs. Calgon tablets help your washing machine in four ways: They remove limescale and other harmful hard water deposits They soften water, protecting your washing machine and clothes They prevent rust They neutralise bad odours Reviewers have highlighted how effective Calgon is at keeping their washing machines in working order. One Amazon customer wrote: "Third time ordering. UK water is hard so it makes your drum in your [washing machine] smell, this helps a lot and it also softens the water for softer washing. Good value for money". Another wrote: "[I] bought a new Bosch washing machine in January 2011, have used a Calgon tab in every wash for the last 15 years and it's never missed a beat, still going strong — brilliant price for 75 tabs, can't be beaten anywhere."

When I want to get away from it all, these are the places I dream about
Advertisement We spend days getting push notifications about trade wars and stock market plunges. If we aren't fretting about our 401(k) plans or the latest climate disaster, then there's more bad news about another Disney live-action remake (Why, Disney? Why?). Back in the 1980s, folks could escape their daily troubles by filling a bathtub with bubbles and pleading, 'Calgon, take me away.' Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up These days, we need something stronger than Calgon. Sometimes, a physical getaway that involves leaving a cellular coverage area helps, and I have ideas. Even if my suggestions don't get your travel bug chirping, think about the beauty of occasionally getting away. If it's just for an afternoon, that works, too. Christopher Muther Lanai , Hawaii Lanai is the smallest of Maui County's populated islands, with a population of just over 3,000. It has one small airport, but most visitors arrive by ferry, and because many of its attractions can only be reached by dirt roads (there are no traffic lights), it tends to keep many Hawaii tourists away. What it does have is a 40-acre cat sanctuary where more than 700 cats live in paradise. The refuge is vital for protecting the local bird population, but it's also the happiest place on earth for visitors who can spend time with the cats. It's easy to forget about the world when you have some of the sweetest creatures on the planet vying for time to sit on your lap. Advertisement Christopher Muther can be reached at

Child star who sang 'washing machines live longer with Calgon' has new job
Seb Sargent, 21, went viral mimicking train voices on TikTok - but he started young, singing the Calgon jingle at just two-years-old that foreshadowed his future career Seb Sargent's voice is probably more familiar to you than his face. At just 21, the Salford-based broadcaster and voice artist has lent his vocal cords to everything from rapper Central Cee's stage shows to shop announcements and official railway messages. But it all began with a famous jingle - delivered during nap time at daycare when Seb, aged two-and-a-half, sat bolt upright and sang: "Washing machines live longer with Calgon!" Now, with over 57,000 TikTok followers, Seb blends behind-the-scenes voiceover work with viral impressions of famous UK transport voices. "People call me the 'voice of the UK' or the 'voice of the trains,'" he laughs. "It's surreal." Diagnosed with ADHD as a child, Seb credits his neurodivergence with fuelling his fast-paced life, which juggles voice gigs, songwriting, a Master's degree, journalism training, and restaurant shifts. READ MORE: Elite star's new Netflix thriller is being called 'the worst movie ever' as viewers left furious His early fascination with TV adverts and slogans turned into a career at just 13, when he recorded his first professional voiceover - a voicemail greeting for a wedding car hire company. Seb's big break came at 18, when he recorded voiceovers for Central Cee's London Underground-themed sets at Parklife and Wireless festivals. "I was a uni fresher listening to his tracks at student nights," Seb recalls. "Next thing, my voice was echoing through stadium speakers." Since then, his portfolio has expanded to include official work for the Department for Transport, including safety announcements for the rail network, and in-store messages for retailers like B&M. But it was during the 2020 lockdown, out of boredom, that Seb found an online audience. A TikTok video mixing his real railway announcements with uncanny impressions of other voice artists quickly went viral. "I made a spoof suggesting I was the single voice behind every train announcement. I'm not, of course - but people loved the idea," he says. "I still don't confirm which bits are real and which are impressions. That's part of the fun." One of his most popular videos shows Seb being recognised by a train manager on an Avanti West Coast service. Invited to take the mic, he delivered a live announcement at Manchester Piccadilly - first mimicking a fellow voice artist, then switching to his own voice. "People were staring," he says. "They knew the voice but couldn't quite believe it was coming from me." Despite his growing fame, Seb remains grounded. He recently graduated from Cardiff University with a journalism degree and is now pursuing a Master's in Salford while working shifts for the BBC. "There's a running joke at work that I never shut up," he jokes. Seb hopes to one day voice the Metrolink Bee Network in his home city. "That would be the dream," he says. "I'm already trying to convince them."

Where to go when you need an escape
Send questions or suggestions to the Starting Point team at . If you'd like the newsletter sent to your inbox, . TODAY'S STARTING POINT I remember Jan. 6, 2021, quite vividly, but not because of the attack on the US Capitol. It sticks in my mind because I was staying in a treehouse in the wilds of New Hampshire. It was just as fantastic as it sounds. During the day I'd ski. The mountain had virtually no cell service. A few text messages managed to get through, but they made little sense. Later that night, as I shimmied out of my thermal underwear and warmed up with hot chocolate, I managed to connect to Wi-Fi and realized I had missed something historic, unprecedented, and tragic. The world had changed, and I had no idea what had occurred. Truth be told, I'm grateful I was able to sit that one out.
