One year ago: EF1 tornado touched down north of Marshall

Editor's note: The video report above is from Feb. 28, 2024. GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Friday marks one year since an EF1 tornado touched down in Calhoun County in the early morning hours. Several tornado warnings were issued in Berrien, Van Buren and Kalamazoo counties leading up to the tornado. At 12:02 a.m. on Feb. 28, 2024, a tornado warning was issued in Calhoun County. Just before 12:30 a.m., an swept through north of Marshall. The tornado stayed on the ground for just over 5 miles with estimated winds of 110 mph. A few buildings were damaged with hundreds of trees reported down. Sirens were sounded in Calhoun County at 12:02 a.m., according to Calhoun County Consolidated Dispatch Authority. That same storm cell that produced a tornado near Marshall continued to track east producing an EF2 tornado near Grand Blanc, south of Flint. Often what triggers a rare February tornado is a surge in temperatures. Leading up to the event, high temperatures hit 73 degrees. Behind the severe weather, highs plummeted to the mid-20s. Ask Ellen: Is severe weather common in February? Though this coming weekend will be quite cold in West Michigan, temperatures once again rise into early next week. That rise in temperature could trigger showers and even a few thunderstorms. There is no sign of severe weather for the Mitten state, though. Further south, the Storm Prediction Center has issued a 30% risk for portions of Mississippi, Arkansas and Louisiana.
