Honours first for family who support children with cancer in Glasgow
It is the first time that three people in the same family have been given BEMs at the same time. 'It feels surreal, and very special,' says Jenna Speirs, who runs the charity Calums Cabin with her mum Caroline, 59, and dad Duncan, 63. (Image: Newsquest) 'We are really happy of course, it's such an honour, but it is strange too because if we hadn't lost Calum, we wouldn't be in this situation. 'It's all been for him.' The Speirs family set up Calum's Cabin to provide holiday homes for children facing cancer, after Jenna's twin brother Calum sadly died from a brain tumour in 2007, when he was just 12 years old. Calum Speirs (Image: Jenna Speirs) The charity arranges retreats for around 250 families per year, and is fully funded through fundraising and sponsorship. They also provide 12 flats across Finnieston and Hyndland to allow families from across the country to stay together in welcoming, home-from-home surroundings during extended periods of treatment. 'When Calum went into hospital, my mum and dad went with him, and I couldn't go,' recalls Jenna, 30. 'We lived on Bute, so it wasn't possible for them to come back and forwards, so I didn't see them for six weeks. 'I have never forgotten how hard that was. That's why the flats in Glasgow are so important." (Image: Jenna Speirs) Jenna said receiving the BEM alongside her parents was "extra special." "It was always the four of us, together," she says. "So it feels right that we're getting this honour together, for Calum.' She adds: 'The letters all went to my mum and dad's home, so my mum texted me theirs first, and I was absolutely buzzing for them, I was so excited.' She laughs. 'My mum waited five full minutes to let me know I had one too,' she says. 'Calum was always the joker in our family, so she said she just did it because she knew he'd appreciate it …' Jenna, who is a therapeutic radiographer in Edinburgh, says helping families get through the most difficult of times in their lives has been the 'most rewarding' part of Calum's Cabin. 'There are so many special stories, but I think my favourite is the wee boy who stayed in Calum's Cabin during his treatment for cancer, got the all clear and then was asked by his parents where he wanted to go on holiday to celebrate,' she says, smiling. 'He could have gone anywhere in the world, and he said 'Calums Cabin' on Bute. I love that. 'It's incredible to think that one, small idea has got us here. And 18 years on, people are still talking about Calum. That means so much to us.' (Image: Colin Dalgarno) Colin Dalgarno started playing rugby at Strathaven RFC in 1994, but in 2012, he suffered a devastating injury when he broke his back during a game. 'I found out shortly after that I wouldn't be able to play again,' explains the 37-year-old commercial manager. 'Rugby has given me so much, and the club has been a staple for me through difficult times, so as soon as I heard that news, I knew I needed to channel my energy into giving back to the sport and my community.' Colin's impressive achievements as club president and coach include securing more than £2.5m in funding for new pitches, changing rooms, meeting spaces and a clubhouse. He is also a founder member of the charity Whiteshawgate 3G Sports Trust formed in partnership with SRC and Stathaven Dynamo Football Club (SDFC). The news of his British Empire Medal came as a huge shock, he says. 'My wife Hannah passed me the envelope when I came in from work and I was a bit speechless,' he admits. 'I'm absolutely delighted. It truly is an honour.' Deacon Jim Hamilton (Image: Newsquest) Jim Hamilton, Deacon of Maryhill Ruchill Church, has been awarded a British Empire Medal for services to his local community, including his organisation of the much-loved Cadder Gala Day and his creation of the Maryhill Activity Directory. 'This was a total surprise,' says the 60-year-old. 'I am really just doing my job. It's been a privilege to serve as a deacon in the Maryhill area for nearly 25 years. 'I have loved serving these communities and have learned so much from my team and colleagues over the years. "As deacon I am a face of the church, but so many have quietly helped behind the scenes as unsung heroes, this award is also for each of you.' Adarsh Khullar is dedicated to fighting food poverty in her Pollokshaws community and she is receiving the British Empire Medal for services to the Scottish Asian Ekta Group The 84-year-old successfully applied for funding and created the Grub Club, so children and their families would come into the centre to enjoy activities and lunch. She ran the service during lockdown, and stepped it up during the cost of living crisis, increasing parcel deliveries, ensuring poorer people have access to good, home-cooked food. Adarsh also introduced a community trolley, so those in need could help themselves if they were embarrassed to ask for food.

King sharing his cancer diagnosis ‘has helped men open up', says BEM recipient
A woman who has been awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) for her work with the cancer charity she co-founded after her twin brother died of the illness has said the King being open about his diagnosis 'has been really good for men'. Jenna Speirs, and her parents Caroline and Duncan Speirs, have each been awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) for the work they have done with the charity they started after Jenna's twin brother Calum died of cancer aged 12. It is the first time three family members have been named in the same honours list. The trio, from the Isle of Bute, started the charity Calum's Cabin after Calum, who had an inoperable brain tumour, died. On being named in the King's Birthday Honours, Jenna, a therapeutic radiographer, said Charles sharing his cancer diagnosis has helped men open up. 'Him being so open about his cancer journey has been really good for men in particular,' Jenna said. 'You see a lot of men sitting alone in the waiting rooms, but now they are chatting more.' During his time in hospital before his death in 2007, Calum told his sister Jenna, now 30, he wanted to start something called 'Calum's Caravan' for children with cancer to spend time away with their families. 'We were very fortunate growing up going on holidays and living on the Isle of Bute, but lots of children in hospital never got to see the outdoors or the sea,' Jenna said. 'It was his idea. He wanted people to be able to take time away.' The Speirs family had planned to start the charity when he recovered from his illness. 'Unfortunately, that wasn't to be,' Jenna said. 'So we started fundraising at his funeral.' Two years later, Calum's Cabin had acquired its first holiday home for families of children being treated for cancer in Scotland to use. Since then, thousands of families have been helped by the charity, which now has several holiday homes as well as flats in Glasgow for hospital patients and their families to stay in if they live further afield. Caroline, 59, Duncan, 63, and Jenna said receiving the medals was 'very special' and dedicated them to Calum. Jenna paid tribute to her brother, saying: 'Calum was the funniest person you'd ever meet. He liked joking with the nurses and he was extremely caring. 'This is not for the three of us,' Caroline said. 'It's for the four of us.'

Three family members among Scots honoured in King's Birthday Honours
The trio, from the Isle of Bute, started Calum's Cabin after Calum, who had an inoperable brain tumour, died. An MSP and a couple who set up a charity after their daughter was killed in Afghanistan are also among the Scots recognised in the list. Nationwide's chief executive, who becomes a dame, and the Scottish boss of Greggs are also among those honoured, along with a historian who was involved in creating the Great Tapestry of Scotland, and the manager of a poppy factory. Labour MSP Pam Duncan-Glancy is made an MBE for political and public service. Read More: King's Birthday Honours List 2025: Scottish list in full She has been MSP for the Glasgow region since May 2021 and is the first permanent wheelchair user elected to the Scottish Parliament. She said: 'I'm really, really proud to have been given this honour for the work that I've done in the community and for disability rights. 'It's a real honour to do this. When I got elected as an MSP, I said I was a wee working class woman in a wheelchair. 'To think that I could be a wee working class woman in a wheelchair who's also got an MBE, I just thought that was pretty special.' John and Lorna Norgrove are both made OBEs for services to women and children abroad and in Scotland. They set up the Linda Norgrove Foundation in memory of their daughter Linda, an aid worker who was kidnapped by the Taliban and died in an attempted rescue by US forces in October 2010. The foundation funds education, health and childcare for women and children in Afghanistan. Recently it worked with both the Scottish and UK governments to bring 19 female Afghan medical students to Scotland to train to continue their degrees as they were barred by the Taliban from completing their university studies in Afghanistan. The couple said: 'We are honoured to have received this recognition of the work being carried out by the Linda Norgrove Foundation. 'We are a tiny charity, mostly volunteers, who all share the same goal – to make life better for women and children in Afghanistan. Pam Duncan-Glancy (Image: Newsquest) 'We dedicate this honour to all those brave women who remain in Afghanistan, or who have made the decision to leave their homes and families behind to move abroad and continue their studies and careers. Their struggle continues and they are the real heroes of this story.' Debbie Crosbie, the only woman to lead a 'big six' bank in the UK, has been given a damehood for her services to financial services. Dame Debbie told the PA news agency: 'I try to encourage people to think beyond, 'I'm a female', but when it comes to this (honour), I am actually hugely proud. 'I grew up in Glasgow, I wasn't different to any of my peer group, so to be given the opportunity to lead… I've had a massively rewarding career. 'As a woman, I hope that sends a message of opportunity and hope, not just to young people.' Roisin Currie, a fellow Glaswegian and alumnus of Strathclyde University, has been made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for her services to hospitality. Ms Currie became the chief executive of Greggs in 2022 having joined the Newcastle-based bakery chain, popular for its sausage rolls, 12 years prior. Historian Alistair Moffat, 74, who founded the Borders Book Festival, is also recognised in the list. He becomes an MBE in recognition of services to literature and culture. Mr Moffat founded the Borders Book Festival 22 years ago and was also a key figure in the creation of The Great Tapestry of Scotland in 2010. News of the MBE comes as this year's book festival takes place. Mr Moffat said: 'It is just a monumental bunch of flowers to get. 'One of the reasons was for starting the Borders Book Festival, which starts on Thursday. 'The announcement will be in the middle of the book festival, which started 22 years ago. 'It has a big, beneficial impact on the region, and it brings in lots of visitors. The MBE has been very well-timed.' Others recognised include Charles Pelling, manager of the Lady Haig Poppy Factory in Edinburgh. He becomes an OBE in recognition of services to veterans. A team of disabled ex-servicemen and women make all items for the Scottish Poppy Appeal at the factory, which was founded in 1926 by Lady Haig. A social media influencer known as the Hillwalking Hijabi has also been recognised. Zahrah Mahmood, 34, president of Ramblers Scotland, is made an MBE for her contribution to voluntary service in Scotland. She said: 'If I'm being honest I'm still taking it in. I'm grateful, and I hope I can continue using whatever platform this brings to keep doing the work which matters to me and so many others.' Others recognised include recently retired Police Scotland Assistant Chief Constable Gary Ritchie, who has been awarded the King's Police Medal (KPM), while the force's chief officer of human resources, Nicky Page, becomes an MBE for services to policing, equality and health. Scottish Secretary Ian Murray said: 'The honours list showcases the remarkable achievements of individuals across Scotland who have gone above and beyond in their respective fields. 'Their service to our communities represents the spirit of dedication and excellence that makes Scotland proud.'
