Indianapolis Colts' salary cap update with OTAs underway

Indianapolis Colts' salary cap update with OTAs underway Following the offseason roster shuffle that takes place during free agency and the NFL draft, where do the Indianapolis Colts stand salary cap-wise? Following the offseason roster shuffle that takes place during free agency and the NFL draft, where do the Indianapolis Colts stand salary cap-wise with OTAs underway? The Colts were aggressive this offseason, landing two of the top free agents at their respective position groups in Cam Bynum and Charvarius Ward. GM Chris Ballard would also sign Daniel Jones to compete with Anthony Richardson at quarterback. At the moment, Over the Cap has the Colts with $20.089 million in available salary cap space. Compared to the rest of the NFL, this ranks as the 19th most. At this stage of the offseason, even if the Colts were going to add to their roster, it's not as if any free agent signing would break the bank at this point. Any addition would likely be on a league minimum deal or close to it. One position in particular where another addition might make sense is at safety, where the Colts are short on experienced depth. But barring another signing, there are still some additional cap expenses coming down the road. As of now, second-round pick JT Tuimoloau remains unsigned, and OTC projects that his rookie deal will come with a cap hit of $1.81 million for the 2025 season. The Colts will also need cap space to assemble the practice squad, along with having reserves for any in-season spending that has to take place. The offseason salary cap figure is also based on the top 51 contracts on the books, and as we all know, there are 53 players on the regular season roster that take cap space. Any unused cap space at the end of the season can be rolled over into the 2026 offseason.

Where are Indianapolis Colts ranked in ESPN's Football Power Index?

Where are Indianapolis Colts ranked in ESPN's Football Power Index? Where did the Indianapolis Colts land in ESPN's preseason Football Power Index rankings? Where did the Indianapolis Colts land in ESPN's preseason Football Power Index (FPI) rankings? But first, what is FPI? Using analytics, FPI "is a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team's performance going forward for the rest of the season," and results are based on "10,000 simulations." For the Colts, they come in at No. 23 in these FPI rankings at minus-1.9 points, meaning that against an average NFL team, the Colts would lose by 1.9 points based on the thousands of simulations. As we've discussed before, there is a lot to like about this Colts roster. The secondary has been reshaped with the additions of Cam Bynum and Charvarius Ward, not to mention that the addition of Lou Anarumo as defensive coordinator should provide the unit with a boost, and the defensive line has been heavily invested in over the years. On offense, the Colts have a number of playmaking options, including at the tight end position now with Tyler Warren. However, the biggest unknown for this Colts team lies at the game's most important position--quarterback. Ultimately, how good the Colts are will be determined by the play of whoever ends up under center. Throughout offseason programs and into training camp, Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones will be splitting the starting reps, and as Shane Steichen has said earlier this offseason, consistency will determine who wins that job. "It is an open competition," Steichen said after Wednesday's practice. "Those guys are competing. We're breaking down the reps; they're both getting one reps, they're both getting two reps. I think through OTAs, we got nine good practices, they'll both get about 170 reps a piece with those guys, with the ones and twos. We'll flip-flop them." On paper, the Colts have the 12th-easiest strength of schedule heading into the 2025 season.

PFF picks one Indianapolis Colts' undrafted free agent to watch this summer

Who is one undrafted free agent for the Indianapolis Colts to keep your eyes on this summer? Ben Cooper of Pro Football Focus recently highlighted one UDFA from each of the 32 teams to watch for, and when it came to the Colts, he selected Ole Miss safety Trey Washington. Advertisement "We'll highlight Washington," wrote Cooper, "whose 90.2 PFF tackling grade and 87.2 PFF run-defense grade in 2024 both ranked in the top 15 among FBS safeties. Indianapolis lacks proven depth behind Nick Cross and Cam Bynum, opening the door for Washington to earn a role." Washington played just shy of 2,200 defensive snaps over four seasons, which includes being a starter the last two years. He has experience playing closer to the line of scrimmage, but the bulk of his snaps came as a free safety. This past season, Washington was an extremely reliable tackler, making 64 of his 68 attempts, and that resulted in him being a top run defender by PFF's grading system as well. In coverage, Washington had his best season, allowing a completion rate of 59%, just 8.4 yards per catch, and held quarterbacks to a passer rating of 80.2. Washington also had four pass breakups and one interception. Advertisement One of the most important aspects when it comes to making a team as a UDFA is that there has to be room on the roster. When it comes to the safety position for the Colts, there very much is. While Cam Bynum and Nick Cross are the starters at safety, behind them on the depth chart are Rodney Thomas, Daniel Scott, Marcel Dabo, and potentially Hunter Wohler, if he's not listed at linebacker. Safety position still thin for Indianapolis Colts after 2025 NFL draft

Safety position still thin for Indianapolis Colts after 2025 NFL draft After free agency and the NFL draft, the safety position for the Indianapolis Colts is still looking a bit thin. After free agency and the NFL draft, the safety position for the Indianapolis Colts is still looking a bit thin. While the addition of Cam Bynum in free agency will greatly improve the level of play from this unit, the depth behind him and Nick Cross is short on experience. After Bynum and Cross on the depth chart is Rodney Thomas, who played nearly 1,800 snaps on defense during his first two NFL seasons, according to PFF, but was hardly on the field in 2024. Then it is Marcel Dabo, who has been on the practice squad as an International Pathway Player, and Daniel Scott, who, unfortunately, has missed his first two NFL seasons due to injuries. Those five players make up the entire safety room currently. Now, I'm sure there will be some UDFA additions that help bolster the depth of that unit from a numbers perspective. Also, seventh-round draft pick Hunter Wohler played safety at Wisconsin. So perhaps, those are potential options. However, you should never assume that a UDFA can be relied upon heavily if needed. That's the hope, but oftentimes not the case. With Wohler, the Colts drafted him as a linebacker, but GM Chris Ballard said he would fill a variety of roles, which could include some dime safety duties. I'm sure Wohler could step in at safety if the Colts were in a pinch, but having a late Day 3 rookie learning two position groups would potentially be putting a lot on his plate--not to mention that if Wohler is at safety, a not-so-deep linebacker position is now without a player. As we detailed recently, there are three positions on the Colts roster where one could justify making an addition still, and the unknown around the depth at safety is a reason why this position group was on that list. According to Over the Cap, a few free agent safety options who still remain unsigned include Justin Simmons, Rayshawn Jenkins, Jordan Whitehead, Julian Blackmon, Chuck Clark, and Jordan Poyer. Salary cap-wise, the Colts have the ability to make an addition if Ballard chooses to go down that path.

Every Indianapolis Colts pick by round in 2025 NFL draft

The 2025 NFL draft is here, and the Indianapolis Colts hold seven selections in total over the three days. After a free agency period where we saw the Colts aggressively address the secondary, their remaining needs include finding a well-rounded tight end, competition for the starting right guard and linebacker roles, along with bolstering the defensive line depth. Advertisement A few of the less pressing needs that we could see the Colts attempt to tackle are finding more production at running back behind Jonathan Taylor, not to mention that even with adding Cam Bynum in free agency, safety depth remains a need as well. I also wouldn't be surprised to see a Day 3 quarterback added to the mix either. Here is when the Colts will be on the clock each day of the NFL draft. Day 1 of NFL draft Round 1, Pick 14 Day 2 of NFL draft Round 2, pick 45 Round 3, pick 80 Day 3 of NFL draft Round 4, pick 117 Round 5, pick 151 Round 6, pick 189 Round 7, pick 232 With a modest seven selections and a number of needs to address, as highlighted above, trading down on either Day 1 or Day 2 of the draft to accumulate additional draft capital makes a lot of sense for the Colts. Advertisement The general consensus seems to be that the depth of this year's draft class is in the latter portion of Day 1 and into the middle of Day 2.
