Scheffler seizes PGA Championship lead ahead of final round
Scottie Scheffler has produced a brilliant finish to claim a three-stroke lead ahead of the PGA Championship's final round at Quail Hollow Club in Charotte, North Carolina. World number one Scheffler was forced to deal with testing weather conditions during the third round, firing a 6-under-par 65 that was little short of brilliant under the circumstances. The start of the third round was delayed due to lightning in the Charlotte area. A two-time Masters champion, Scheffler is 11-under with one round remaining, while Sweden's Alex Noren vaulted into second place with a similarly barnstorming finish for a 66. Noren, who birdied four of the final five holes, was alone on 8-under. Americans Davis Riley (67) and JT Poston (68) were four shots behind in a tie for third. Adam Scott is the best-placed Australian, sharing 13th position on 4-under for the tournament. Scott managed a 2-under 69 in the third round, while compatriot Cam Davis (70) is a stroke back on 3-under through 54 holes. Scheffler was far from perfect with three bogeys, but he more than made up for those blemishes with seven birdies and a brilliant eagle at the driveable par-four 14th hole, where he hit his tee shot to inside three feet. He added birdies at the 15th, 17th and 18th holes to stamp himself as the favourite. "I hung in really well today," Scheffler said. "I just battled really hard. Did a good job of staying patient and hit some nice shots. I definitely struck the ball a lot better today than the last couple of days." Overnight leader Jhonattan Vegas of Venezuela fell into a tie for fifth with a bogey on the 18th hole. He finished 2-over (73) for the day and is 6-under for the tournament alongside South Korea's Kim Si-woo (71) and Spain's Jon Rahm (67). Masters champion Rory McIlroy continued his struggles with a 72 to trail Scheffler by 13 shots. The third of the Australians left in the tournament, Elvis Smylie, had a day to forget with a 6-over 77. Smylie is 7-over to be tied for 69th place on the leaderboard. AP/ABC

Cam Davis slumps at PGA Championship, Jhonattan Vegas leads after second round
Australia's Cam Davis has fallen off the pace with a disappointing second round at the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, North Carolina. Davis was two shots off the lead at 5-under-par after his first round but followed up with a 3-over 74. He sits in a share of 27th place at 2-under through 36 holes, six strokes behind the leader, Venezuela's Jhonattan Vegas. Davis's compatriot Adam Scott is also at 2-under, having fired an even-par 71 in the second round. Elvis Smylie (73) made the cut at 1-over in his US major championship debut, but fellow Australians Jason Day, Cam Smith, Min Woo Lee and Karl Vilips all failed to do so. Vegas maintained his overnight lead, despite a last-hole double-bogey. He had been on course to enjoy a substantial halfway lead when he came to the last hole in his second round with a four-shot advantage over the field. But that was soon halved after he made a mess of a bunker shot at 18 and then missed a putt to finish with a second-round 70, to go with his brilliant opening 7-under 64. Vegas leads at 8-under, two shots ahead of Frenchman Matthieu Pavon (65), England's Matt Fitzpatrick (68) and South Korean Kim Si-woo (64), who managed a hole-in-one on the sixth. "I can't really get to down on myself for making a double on 18, even though I wish I didn't make that," Vegas said. "I just have to remember the good stuff and keep it up for two more days." World number one Scottie Scheffler (68) was tied for fifth place on 5-under. US Open champion Bryson DeChambeau had a 3-under 68 but capped his day with a disappointing bogey that left him five shots behind Vegas. Masters winner Rory McIlroy (69) survived to make the cut at 1-over, as did defending champion Xander Schauffele (71). AAP/ABC

PGA Championship 2025 tee times and schedule for round 2 including Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler
Masters champion Rory McIlroy faces an uphill battle to claim back-to-back major titles after an error-strewn opening round in the 107th US PGA Championship. McIlroy struggled to a three-over-par 74 to trail clubhouse leaders Cam Davis and Ryan Gerard - a North Carolina native - by eight shots, with Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald surprisingly a shot off the pace alongside Aaron Rai, Ryan Fox, Alex Smalley and Stephan Jaeger. England's Matt Fitzpatrick and Scotland's Robert MacIntyre were another stroke back on three under, alongside US Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley and Tyrrell Hatton. McIlroy's play-off victory over Justin Rose at Augusta National in April had made him just the sixth male golfer to complete a career grand slam and gave him a fifth major title, one behind Sir Nick Faldo. The world number two was also strongly fancied to equal Faldo's tally at the first opportunity at Quail Hollow, a venue where he won his first PGA Tour title in 2010 and has since claimed three more victories, including last year. However, McIlroy, who hit just three fairways in regulation, was fortunate not to find the water with a number of pulled tee shots and unsurprisingly did not speak to the media before heading straight to the range after his round. Here are the tee times for round two. Cam Davis tied second after first round of US PGA Championship at Quail Hollow
Cam Davis is the best-placed Australian after the first round of the US PGA Championship, sitting in a tie for second following a five-under 66. Davis and American Ryan Gerard held a share of the clubhouse lead until Venezuelan Jhonattan Vegas made an evening surge, achieving five birdies from his final six holes to card a seven-under 64. Davis, 30, shot seven birdies and two bogeys at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, North Carolina. Entering his final hole of the day, Davis was six-under and needed par to claim the outright clubhouse lead. Davis's second shot went into thick rough and the Australian was unable to complete the up-and-down from there, missing his par putt to end a very good round. Davis started his round from the 10th hole and began his tournament with a birdie, before dropping back to even par with a bogey three holes later. But the Sydneysider went on to birdie six of the next 11 holes to take the lead of the tournament. Davis had trouble on the par-5 seventh hole, his 16th hole for the day, when his second shot found deep rough by the green. A chip onto the green rolled back down a slope, leaving the Australian with a long two-putt to save par. Veteran Adam Scott also enjoyed a good round at Quail Hollow, ending the first round at two-under. Scott began his round with five pars, but then kick-started his round with consecutive birdies at the sixth, seventh and eighth holes. Scott was poised for a bogey-free round, but came unstuck at the tricky 16th par-4. His second shot sailed over the green into the rough, with Scott's follow-up chip rolling well past the hole on the quick green. Scott missed his par putt narrowly to the right, leading to the first blemish on his scorecard. Scott then three-putted from 70 feet at the par-3 17th, as Quail Hollow's final three holes, nicknamed the "Green Mile", caught out the 2013 US Masters champion. The "Green Mile" hurt many scorecards on Thursday, with more than 20 balls finding water. Elvis Smylie was the only other Australian under par, with a one-under 70 in the first round. As Davis and Scott featured at the top of the leaderboard, other Aussies who teed off earlier in the day did not fare as well. Former US PGA Champions Jason Day shot a two-over 73, while Min Woo Lee finished with a 74. 2022 Open champion Cam Smith and Karl Vilips suffered shocking rounds at Quail Hollow, both shooting 78. Meanwhile, US Masters champion Rory McIlroy will need to fight back if he wants to contend this week following a three-over 74. McIlroy, who has won at Quail Hollow four times, including the US PGA Championship in 2010, shot two birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey in his opening round.
