It's no surprise that Toyota has recently relaunched the Land Cruiser in both the United States and Europe. The Land Cruiser became famous for its robustness and dependability. It was one of the few vehicles that could go anywhere and get you home after. The Land Cruiser first appeared in 1951 as the BJ and FJ, evolving into the famous J20 in 1955 with a design that would soon become iconic. Toyota is no stranger to bougie, especially with its luxury division, Lexus. However, the main parent company knows a thing or two about opulent travel, and nowhere is this more apparent than with the Century sedan. This definitely looks like the type of car you'd see parked outside a funeral home, but the specs of this thing will actually make you feel alive. Century is a manufacturer's flagship in Japan, and while it has been in production since 1967, there have only been three generations of the luxury sedan. Century is a manufacturer's flagship in Japan, and while it has been in production since 1967, there have only been three generations of the luxury sedan. The best is the G50, which debuted in 1997 with a massive 5.0-liter V12 under the hood. The third generation debuted in 2018, and under the hood is now a 5.0-liter hybrid V8 engine, producing a combined total power output of 425 hp. Not content with its current GR offerings, Toyota introduced the GR Corolla for the 2024 model year. Starting at just $37,195, it is little wonder that, like the GR Yaris, the GR Corolla has taken the enthusiast market by storm. Under the hood, the G16E-GTS 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine produces 300 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque across all the trim levels. Like the GR Yaris, it offers superb handling via the GR circuit-tuned suspension, and gearheads will revel in the six-speed manual transmission. All-wheel drive is another bonus with the GR Corolla. I'm currently looking at my 2015 Corolla with 132 hp and weeping. For every beige Corolla you see in a school pickup line, there's a GR Yaris lighting up a rally stage. For every practical RAV4, there's a Supra chasing supercars or an LFA screaming past redline at 9,000 RPM. Toyota doesn't always flaunt its fun side, but when it does? It leaves a mark. Legroom and headroom are at or near the best-in-class, and the higher-end trims' leather, heated seats, heated steering wheel, ambient lighting, and acoustic-laminated glass are nice additions. There's also 15.1 cubic feet of trunk space, which is on par with the class. The 2025 Toyota Camry only comes with a hybrid powertrain, and the V6 and gas I4 are no longer in production. The front-wheel-drive (FWD) model comes with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine connected to two electric motors, which gives you 225 horsepower combined. AWD models add a third electric motor, which gives you a combined total of 232 hp. All Camrys come with a planetary gearset that acts as a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The motor in the rear activates automatically during low-traction situations and improves performance with no need for driver input. The penalty for AWD is about 1 mpg, but the gain (aside from the obvious) is an additional 7 horsepower. As I mentioned earlier, all new Toyota Camrys are available as hybrids. Additionally, they come standard with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and wireless charging capabilities. Base trim Camrys get an 8.0-inch display while higher trims get a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen. If you opt for the lower trims, some people get the sense that they are driving a not-so-premium vehicle. The tiny screen and the use of thin plastics in certain areas don't help. Sure, the higher-end Camrys have very nice seats and a great-looking dash, but there are some hints that this car was built on a budget. Even with the acoustic-laminated glass on the higher trim models, there is a bit of road noise that enters the cabin. Toyota ditched its brilliant 301 hp 3.5-liter V6, which, when combined with the TRD performance package upgrade, made for a fun Camry. I know, the word "fun" and "Camry" are rarely placed in the same sentence, but it was true - that car was a hoot to drive. While it's still plenty quick, that old "zing" is lost. The steering is totally synthetic in feel, too, and the car's swagger largely comes in the XSE trim, which bears a steep price. Remember when I mentioned the XSE comes with a "steep price?" That isn't just the financial premium. You see, the XSE package comes with sporty-looking 19-in. smoked gray and black-finished alloy wheels, a cool-looking spoiler, and lots of leather inside. Could a pre-fab factory get more native Hawaiians into homes?
The Department of Hawaiian Home Lands is looking to build modular housing as a cheaper, quicker way to chip away at its waitlist of more than 29,000 applicants. Lawmakers have proposed giving the department money to buy a 196,000-square-foot hangar in Kalaeloa, which would be converted into a manufacturing facility to produce modular housing units that are 10% to 15% less expensive than traditional construction. The hangar is currently owned by the University of Hawaiʻi and used to store helicopters for the police and fire departments. Homes would be assembled at the facility and sold to beneficiaries when they are awarded a land lease. Lawmakers still haven't determined how much money to give DHHL to acquire the hangar. The land underneath the hangar currently has an assessed value of $4.4 million. Department Director Kali Watson estimated that it would cost another $4.8 million to refurbish the hangar. DHHL, tasked with housing Native Hawaiians, has struggled for decades to provide enough housing lots to beneficiaries on its waitlist, many of whom have died before receiving a lease for land promised to them by a 100-year-old federal law. When plots of DHHL land have become available, many Hawaiians have found it difficult to finance construction of a new home. The department believes that modular housing would offer a cheaper alternative and that an Oʻahu factory could produce up to 40 homes a month. 'It may be our go-to approach if we find the savings is tremendous,' Watson told lawmakers earlier this month. The department plans to partner with Fading West, a company based in Colorado that specializes in off-site homebuilding. It's already done work in Hawaiʻi, building 82 homes for the Federal Emergency Management Agency to place in Lahaina. According to Eric Schaefer, the company's chief business development officer, the homes were delivered from Fading West's facility in Buena Vista, Colorado, and were ready for occupancy within about four months of FEMA's order. Home designs on Fading West's website are meant to fit in with Colorado's architecture, but DHHL would create its own designs that wouldn't look out of place in a neighborhood in Hawaiʻi, Schaefer said. Production of the modular homes runs a bit like an assembly line at a car facility. Schaefer said Fading West based its process off Toyota's approach to building cars. 'Instead of building Corollas and Camrys, we're building two- (and) three-bedroom homes,' Schaefer said. Fading West and DHHL envision homes that are up to 15% cheaper than homes built on-site in Hawaiʻi. Right now, new homes in Honolulu cost upward of $500 per square foot to build, according to the construction cost calculator from the consulting firm Rider Levett Bucknall, meaning DHHL could save about $75,000 building a 1,000-square-foot modular home Fading West plans to do a 24-home pilot project for DHHL on Maui. The homes would be built on the mainland and shipped here where Maui contractors would install things such as roofing, plumbing and electrical wiring. Pre-fab housing previously faced opposition from the building industry over worries that constructing cheaper homes could reduce construction workers' wages. But the rush to rehouse people after the Lahaina wildfire seems to have softened the industry's stance. DHHL was the only state agency that testified on Senate Bill 1553, the proposal to buy the hangar. The bill has received no opposition so far. The agency received a historic cash infusion of $600 million three years ago. Most of that money has been allocated to homelands projects across the state, and the department is now seeking an additional $600 million from the Legislature this year. SB 1553 cleared the Senate Ways and Means Committee on Wednesday and now moves to the full Senate for a vote. ___
