American authorities shared an affidavit for the arrest signed by a U.S. Homeland Security agent with Global News. Story continues below advertisement It said that after his arrest, the accused allegedly told officers that he had entered the U.S. to haul a load of vegetables to Georgia but his truck broke down in Tennessee. He allegedly claimed that the shipment was moved on by another driver and he then headed back to Canada without a trailer before he was dispatched by his company to pick up a trailer he thought was empty at a truck stop in Kentucky but U.S. authorities say the accused actually picked the trailer up at a truck stop in Michigan on April 20. Later that day, he was arrested while attempting to cross into Canada. This is the third instance in which someone has been arrested while allegedly smuggling a large shipment of cocaine into Canada since March 22, according to U.S. Customs. On April 15, U.S. authorities say customs officers intercepted 339 pounds (154 kilograms) of cocaine near the Ambassador Bridge and in that case, an Indian man was arrested in connection with the incident. And they say the first incident occurred on March 21, as a truck carrying intercepted 116 pounds (52.96 kilograms) of cocaine was pulled over at the bridge as well.

Farmington Hills deer decision; Trump to speak in Warren; Pistons in playoffs; and more top stories. U.S. officials intercepted and confiscated 193 pounds of cocaine on a truck that was en route to Canada during an outbound check at the Ambassador Bridge port of entry. "It's amazing enforcement work by all involved," Port Director Marc Calixte said in the press release issued Monday by U.S. Customs and Border Protection. This drug bust, which happened April 20, is the third bulk cocaine seizure by the CBP Field Operations in Detroit since March 21. CBP's border security assignments include screening international travelers and cargo to be on the lookout for illicit narcotics, invasive weeds and counterfeit consumer goods among other details. The investigation involved a Canada-bound commercial vehicle and trailer that was "selected for examination," the report said. Upon the search, officers found several bricks of a white powdery substance packed in two duffel bags. Testing confirmed the cargo to be cocaine. The cocaine, truck and trailer, all were seized. The driver, who is a Canadian citizen, faces federal prosecution. "Safe and secure international commerce is essential to protecting the homeland," Director of Field Operations Marty C. Raybon said in the announcement. "Rest assured that we'll continue to leverage all available resources to disrupt the transnational drug trade and those seeking to exploit our Michigan ports of entry." The case remains under investigation by ICE Homeland Security Investigations.

Border officials in Michigan seize 3rd bulk discovery of cocaine in a month
April 28 (UPI) -- U.S. border agents in Michigan intercepted nearly 200 pounds of cocaine on its way north to Canada in a third seizure of the illicit drug in weeks time, according to federal officials. "Safe and secure international commerce is essential to protecting the homeland," Marty C. Raybon, director of CBP field operations in Michigan, said Monday in a release. Last week, some 193 ponds of cocaine was seized by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers after they randomly selected a Canada-bound commercial truck for search during outbound enforcement operations near the U.S. point of entry at the Ambassador Bridge. The driver, an unidentified Canadian citizen, faces federal prosecution in the United States. "It's amazing enforcement work by all involved," said Port Director Marc Calixte. An examination of the trailer on April 20 revealed "several" bricks of a "white powdery substance" that was concealed within two duffel bags and later confirmed to be cocaine via testing. The cocaine was seized along with the truck and trailer. This was now the third bulk cocaine seizure by field agents in Detroit since last month. Normally, Border Patrol agents seize illicit drugs at the border with Mexico. However, more than 1,500 pounds of cocaine have been seized at Michigan ports of entry since October 2024. In December, Canada said it was investing $1.3 billion to "bolster security at the border and strengthen the immigration system, all while keeping Canadians safe." The case remains under investigation by ICE Homeland Security Investigations.
