Butlerville's Jacob Lewis wins top prize on Canada's Got Talent
Newfoundland and Labrador's newest star is taking home a million dollars after singing his way to the top of a nationally televised talent show.
Jacob Lewis, an offshore oil and gas worker from Butlerville, N.L. entered Canada's Got Talent with dreams of being a singer. Now he's leaving the show as a champion.
Lewis was crowned the winner Tuesday night during a live finale episode filmed in Niagara Falls, Ont.
Viewers voted for their favourite talent online, and Lewis says he broke record numbers.
"Newfoundland and Labrador was so strong behind me," he told CBC Radio's On the Go on Wednesday.
Lewis was up against seven other contestants.
Lewis wowed judge and superstar musician Shania Twain after performing a rendition of Bon Jovi's Bed of Roses in an audition. She gave Lewis a "golden buzzer," meaning he secured a place in later rounds of the show, immune to any prior elimination.
The win is something he said he's envisioned for a long time, and now it's a fond memory.
The talent show champion said his family will use the money to help look after their two sons, who have some health challenges.
Lewis said he sees this moment as an opportunity to leap into the music industry.
