Major works to London Overground line and station to be completed next year
Accessibility works to Surrey Quays station are scheduled to be completed in the summer of next year. The scheme from Transport for London (TfL) comes alongside a project to boost the capacity of the Windrush line to provide 7,000 new homes for the area. Work to deliver a new station entrance on Lower Road has progressed, with roof materials having been installed and two new lifts being added soon to ensure step-free access between both platforms. The new entrance will provide greater access to Surrey Quays Shopping Centre and ease congestion. It is also planned to lead to the 53-acre Canada Water Masterplan from British Land and AustralianSuper, including thousands of new homes as well as leisure and retail amenities. Miles Price, planning director at British Land, said: "The new entrance at Surrey Quays station is one of a number of significant upgrades to local transport infrastructure that British Land is facilitating to support delivery of the Canada Water Masterplan." The new entrance, which features an impressive new ticket hall and provides step-free access at the station for the first time, will improve the journey experience for existing local residents and visitors to Canada Water alike." A new footbridge was added to the station last month on a weekend the Windrush line was closed. The new provision has stairs leading to all platforms and will provide relief from the existing narrow staircases. The scheme will also see the capacity for the Windrush line, which serves the station, being boosted to meet the growing passenger demand. Several power upgrades and train signalling enhancements have been added which will allow the number of trains between Surrey Quays and Dalston Junction to increase to 18 per hour from late 2026. The increased train capacity will also reportedly support 7,000 new homes being built across Southwark and Lewisham. Rory O'Neill, General Manager for London Overground, said: "There are still future proposals for a new station called Surrey Canal between Surrey Quays and Queens Road Peckham on the Windrush line." He added: "Subject to funding, this new station would serve a brand-new major housing scheme called New Bermondsey, boosting the number of new homes from an initial 7,000 to 14,000. This second phase would also enable a further capacity increase on the Windrush line to 20 trains per hour." The works at Surrey Quays station come as part of a wider scheme to unlock 14,000 news homes through improvements to the Windrush line. The project is funded by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government as part of its Housing Infrastructure Programme alongside a contribution from British Land.
