A two-month-old infant was taken from Sarnia to the London Children's Hospital for serious injuries on Thursday. According to Sarnia police, the infant had to be placed on life support.
Police say they were contacted after hospital staff determined the injuries appeared consistent with a violent criminal act.
Sarnia police have charged the 27-year-old father of the infant with one count of aggravated assault.
Police say aggravated assault is the most severe form of assault in the Canadian Criminal Code and encompasses things like disfiguring, wounding, or endangering life.
At this time, the infant remains in critical condition at London Health Sciences Center - Children's Hospital.
The Sarnia Police Service will not be releasing the name of the charged individual to protect the identity of the child, as well as family members who may not be involved.
The Sarnia Police Service is continuing its investigation into this matter.
