Forecast: Cool, breezy start, then heat
DES MOINES, Iowa — We've seen showers passing through the southern half of the state on this cool Sunday, and these should move off by evening. Your weather timeline takes you into Tuesday and a warming trend: A disturbance passing across Minnesota on Monday will keep the north and northeast in scattered shower chances throughout the day. Expect cool and breezy conditions, and some haze aloft due to Canadian wildfire smoke. Note that along with increasing temperatures will come increasing dewpoints and muggy conditions, setting us up for storm chances in parts of the state Thursday through Saturday. At this point, Thursday's rain chance looks best north of Highway 30. Friday and Saturday's rainfall looks to come in the form of isolated storms. The European computer model below places most of the accumulation by Saturday evening north of Highway 20. Highs for the next six days are above, and your WHO 13 7-day forecasts below: As was the case Saturday, the extended forecasts keep us warmer than average and in the neighborhood of average for precipitation. The final image shows the possibility of severe weather, in particular sometime between June 17th and 19th. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Forecast: Partly cloudy, breezy, mild
Weather Maps Interactive Radar Climate & Environment MONDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Winds: S at 10-15 mph. Low: 67. A second consecutive warm and summery day is on tap Tuesday. The day opens with a mix of sun and clouds along with some residual haze from Canadian Wildfire smoke. The clouds will grow thicker later in the day, and especially at night. Some improvement in the upper-level smoke is likely later in the day and Tuesday evening as winds aloft from the south/southwest mix out some of the haze out of area skies temporarily. Highs will be even warmer than Monday, reaching the upper 80s, and perhaps touching 90-degrees in some locations. Rain chances are low throughout the day, but start to increase a bit by Tuesday evening, reaching 20% of the area. The Storm Prediction Center has placed the metro area in a level 1 of 5 risk for seeing a strong or severe thunderstorm late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning. The primary threats of any storm that could potentially reach severe levels would be damaging winds and small hail. Aurora possible Sunday night, but hazy skies may interfere
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — There is a chance the northern lights could make an appearance in West Michigan if the wildfire smoke is able to clear in time. The has issued a G4 geomagnetic storm watch for June 2. This level is considered severe and may bring the northern lights into West Michigan. A G4 geomagnetic storm correlates to the Kp index, or the measurement of geomagnetic activity. Late Sunday evening into the early morning hours of Monday morning, the Kp index is expected to reach a 7. The northern lights may be seen as far south as northern Illinois, Indiana and Ohio. In West Michigan, the best chance for viewing will be in the Upper Peninsula and northern lower Michigan. Forecasting the aurora is quite challenging, largely because it is based on solar activity like solar flares and coronal mass ejections. These forecasts often change frequently and quickly. The Space Weather Prediction Center does provide an update every 30 minutes to reflect these changes. While West Michigan is expected to be free of cloud cover Sunday night, viewing may be limited due to Canadian wildfire smoke. Hazy skies are expected to linger into Sunday afternoon before winds begin to shift into Monday. There is a chance the smoke will clear in time to give way to viewing the northern lights. As of now, the thickest layer of smoke is expected to hold off to the west. If West Michigan is too hazy to view the northern lights Sunday night, there may be another opportunity Monday night. One more dry and sunny in Pittsburgh before an unsettled weather pattern moves in this week
Temperatures through the overnight have remained quite mild in the urban heat island of the Pittsburgh metro, while rural and outlying areas have dropped into the mid to upper 40s. WEATHER LINKS: Current Conditions | School Closings & Delays | Submit Your Weather Photos Outside of a few thin cirrus clouds drifting east from Ohio and Indiana, skies are largely clear across the region. We continue to monitor a band of Canadian wildfire smoke that shows up across Lake Erie and Ontario this morning. Smoke plumes from wildfires KDKA Weather Center So far, there have been no reported visibility issues, and air quality has not been affected, however, skies may be a touch more hazy through the late morning and early afternoon with this coming through. High temperatures on Sunday, May 11, 2025 KDKA Weather Center Highs will reach the mid-70s to near 80 in most locations with dry and comfortable conditions for those with any outdoor plans. The cutoff upper-level low we've been monitoring over the Gulf Coast states over the last several days is finally starting to show signs of moving northeastward. This means an end to the clear conditions and more humid, active weather toward the early to middle portion of the week. Low temperaturs on Sunday night KDKA Weather Center That system will lead to an increase in clouds Monday afternoon and evening, followed by showers after sunset Monday, Monday night, and Tuesday. Since the atmosphere will be very saturated on Tuesday, we expect quite a bit of cloud cover and slow temperature decrease with height, which should limit the instability for thunderstorms--so just rain is expected. On Wednesday afternoon and evening, we may see a few more storms as temperatures aloft cool a bit along with the intrusion of some drier air. However, widespread severe weather is not a concern. On the backside of this system, we may see some areas of dense fog on Thursday morning due to saturated low levels and very light winds. Monday high temperatures KDKA Weather Center This should give way to partly cloudy skies and warmer conditions on Thursday as a short-lived ridge settles in. With the added moisture in the air along with cloud cover, the range between high and low temperatures Tuesday through Thursday won't be much. Lows near 60 with highs in the mid to upper 70s. Our next weather system of interest will move in by this Friday. A surge of very warm, moist, and unstable air will overspread our region. This, coupled with some stronger jet stream winds aloft, will lead to stronger wind shear that could set up the potential for some severe storms Friday into Friday night, with lingering activity possible on Saturday. Rain chances over the next seven days KDKA Weather Center There remains some uncertainty with the exact timing and location since we're still several days away, but the overall large-scale weather pattern does look favorable for some action. 7-day forecast: May 11, 2025 KDKA Weather Center Stay up to date with the KDKA Mobile App – which you can download here!
