Knicks keep season alive with another Jalen Brunson playoff gem in Game 5 win
Cancún can wait. The Knicks aren't ready for the offseason just yet. They kept their slim NBA Finals hopes alive with their most complete performance of the Eastern Conference finals. Jalen Brunson celebrates after hitting a shot during the Knicks' Game 5 win May 29. Jason Szenes for the NY Post New York Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns slams the ball during the fourth quarter. Jason Szenes / New York Post Jalen Brunson led the way in the victory. Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post Facing elimination for the first time this postseason, Tom Thibodeau's team was sharp Thursday night. Advertisement It played with force and focus. It defended well, limited the Pacers in transition and hammered them in the paint, sending this series back to Indiana for Game 6 on Saturday night with a thorough, wire-to-wire 111-94 victory at the Garden. Jalen Brunson owned the first and third quarters, Karl-Anthony Towns was dominant in the second and effective in the fourth, and everyone else did their part as the Knicks extended the series in emphatic fashion. Jalen Brunson attempts a shot during the Knicks' Game 5 win against the Pacers on May 29. Jason Szenes for the NY Post 'Knicks in seven!' chants began late in the fourth quarter, with the contest well in hand. Knicks fans can at least dream of a Game 7 back at MSG on Monday night. Advertisement 'It's a testament to our team answering the call. I think tonight we did that,' Towns said. 'But we are going to have to be even better next game if we want our season to continue.' Tyrese Haliburton attempts a shot during the Knicks' Game 5 win against the Pacers on May 29. Jason Szenes for the NY Post This marked the first game of the series in which the Knicks were really able to slow the Pacers for an entire game. On Tuesday, Tyrese Haliburton obliterated them and Indiana exploded for 130 points. But two nights later, Haliburton was an afterthought, held without a field goal in the first half and limited to eight points, six assists and a minus-23 on the floor. '[Mikal Bridges] did a great job today trying to be physical, trying to be on his body and not give him anything easy,' Josh Hart said. 'I think we didn't have any plays where we had a miscommunication or left him open for three, which I feel like we did a couple times last game.' Jason Szenes for the NY Post Pascal Siakam, who has terrorized the Knicks throughout this series, managed just 15 points on 13 shots. It was 60-34 in points in the paint, in favor of the Knicks. 'They played harder than us,' Siakam said. 'We played hard, they played harder.' Brunson took charge early and finished with an efficient 32 points on 12-of-18 shooting along with five assists. Towns added 24 points and 13 rebounds, and was a game-high plus-26. Advertisement Mitchell Robinson (six points, six rebounds, two blocks) responded from his admittedly off Game 4 to wreak havoc inside and Hart notched a double-double off the bench with 12 points, 10 rebounds and four assists. Karl-Anthony Towns high-fives New York Knicks guard Josh Hart during the fourth quarter. Jason Szenes / New York Post New York Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns celebrates after he scored and was fouled in the fourth quarter. Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post Brunson ensured a strong start by coming out firing. He hit six of his first seven shots and the Knicks led by 10 midway through the opening quarter. The margin was 11 at the half, the Pacers held to 37.5 percent shooting. 'We have to try to replicate the first quarter next game,' Brunson said. Karl-Anthony Towns gets defeated by the Pacers during the Knicks' Game 5 win. Jason Szenes for the NY Post The Knicks' stifling defense continued into the third quarter, the period that doomed them in Game 4. Advertisement They scored 16 of the first 23 points of the quarter to build a 20-point cushion. Brunson scored 10 of those points, and on consecutive possessions Robinson scored on a follow and blocked Haliburton on a drive. The Pacers responded by getting within 10 only for the Knicks to punch back immediately with a 10-0 burst of their own. Indiana Pacers center Myles Turner and New York Knicks center Mitchell Robinson reach for a rebound during the first quarter. Jason Szenes / New York Post It was a 17-point lead after three quarters, and the Eastern Conference finals would soon be headed back to Indianapolis. 'With this series, we haven't been able to close out games the way we've wanted to, we haven't been able to show how special we are,' Towns said. 'We've had moments of brilliance, but we haven't had games of brilliance. I think tonight was a good testament to when we're locked in playing 48 minutes, we could show the world how special we really are.'

Former MLS MVP Carlos Vela announces retirement after his record-setting career with LAFC
Former Major League Soccer MVP Carlos Vela announced his retirement Tuesday. The 36-year-old Vela spent the previous seven seasons with Los Angeles FC, which signed the Mexican forward as its first designated player in 2017 before the expansion club had played a game. Vela became LAFC's leader in goals (78), assists (59) and games played (152) in a career highlighted by his MVP season in 2019, during which he set an MLS record with 34 goals. LAFC won the MLS Cup in 2022 and earned Supporters' Shield trophies in 2019 and 2022 during Vela's tenure. "Helping to build LAFC and winning trophies for the club is a highlight of my career," Vela said in a statement. "This club means so much to me and my family, and I am proud of everything we have accomplished together with the great fans of Los Angeles. I am excited to begin this next chapter in my journey here in LA." Vela's contract with LAFC ran out after the 2023 season, and he remained unsigned until last September, when he rejoined the club for the playoff stretch. But Vela played only four minutes as a substitute in one playoff game, and LAFC did not re-sign him for the current season. Vela and his family live in Los Angeles, and the club named him its first Black & Gold Ambassador while announcing his retirement. In his new role, Vela will "help us grow the LAFC brand, strengthen our connection with supporters, and continue to inspire the next generation of players," general manager John Thorrington said. A Cancún native, Vela began his youth career with Chivas before moving to Arsenal as a 16-year-old prospect in 2005. He spent much of his Arsenal tenure on loan to several Spanish clubs before landing at Real Sociedad, where he played for six years before joining LAFC. Vela was one of MLS' best players for his first several seasons with LAFC, earning four All-Star selections and three spots in the MLS Best XI. He was the fastest player in MLS history to compile 75 goals and 50 assists in his career, and he is the top Mexican goal-scorer in league history. "From the beginning, Carlos has been more than just a player — he has been the heartbeat, the captain and the face of LAFC," Thorrington said. "Carlos arrived in Los Angeles with a shared vision of building something truly special, and he delivered on that promise in every way. From unforgettable goals to historic victories, Carlos helped make LAFC what it is today." Vela played for Mexico at the World Cup in 2010 and 2018, but he also feuded with El Tri's management at times, leading to long stretches away from the national team. Vela declared himself retired from international football in 2020. LAFC will honor the forward on Noche de Carlos Vela, to be held Sept. 21 at BMO Stadium during a match against Real Salt Lake.

Direct flights to Cancún may say more about the US than Mexico
The turquoise blue water along a sun-drenched Mexican beach is a more appealing prospect than a hostile US border agent. If the comparison seems a bit of a stretch, just ask the Canadians; they've been ditching stateside vacations in their droves recently, in favour of a trip farther south. Now that Aer Lingus has confirmed it will fly directly to Cancún next year, the unprecedented route may prove a timely litmus test for the appetite of Irish tourists and their relative reluctance to visit the US, at least these days. The carrier will service direct flights to the eastern coastal resort, long popular with Irish people, three times a week from January. Famous for its tropical beaches, party vibe, food and sights, the destination has no need to sell itself. But how might it compete with other North American destinations? If Irish tourists follow the lead of the Canadians, the Cancún route may prove to be fortuitous timing for Aer Lingus. READ MORE Earlier this month it emerged that Canadians, angry at the policies of president Donald Trump , were conducting something of a US travel boycott. The number of their residents visiting Mexico climbed 15.6 per cent in March compared with the same month in 2024. The Trump administration's threats of annexation and trade levies triggered a patriotic reaction, strengthened in turn by reports of harsh treatment towards tourists entering the US. Ireland has had its own similar experiences. Visitor numbers from the Republic to the US fell 27 per cent in March when compared with the same month in 2024, according to data from the US International Trade Administration (ITA). It was a similar pattern across Europe. There has been much talk of late about US customs and border protection officers' ability to trawl through passenger phones to see what they might be up to on social media, a disturbing new reality of travel that is likely to put some people off. And given Trump's most recent tariff salvo against the European Union – promising 50 per cent on all imports by June, and who knows what per cent by the time this column reaches print – it is anyone's guess what EU-US relations might look like when Aer Lingus's first Mexico flight touches down south of the border.
