Alia Bhatt says the ‘old me' is gone after birth of daughter Raha Kapoor: ‘I am like who is this new person, who am I?'

Alia Bhatt, who marked her acting debut in 2012, made her Cannes debut after almost 12 years in the film industry. The actress was all over the news for her three exceptional look at the Cannes International Film Festival, especially when she wore a custom Gucci gown, which was designed more or less like an Indian lehenga. While the actress was in French Riviera, doing her brand ambassador duties for Gucci and L'Oreal Paris, her heart was in India where her daughter Raha Kapoor is. In a recent interview, Alia Bhatt shared how motherhood has changed her as a person. She said, 'It was like there was this person which was just gone, and then I was like, 'Who am I? Who is this new person?'' In a conversation with Brut India, Alia Bhatt shared she was not sure how motherhood changed her approach towards the kind of films or roles she takes up, but it definitely helped her create a lot more empathy within herself. She said, 'I think your heart is just wide open. There is a sensitivity which you can't put your finger on. I just think I am not the same person. So by the byproduct of me not being the same human being that I was pre being a mom. I think naturally a lot will change without me being like, 'Okay, now I am a mother'. I just naturally think differently. These are the first things that I noticed. It was like there was this person which was just gone, and then I was like, 'Who am I? Who is this new person?'' Another change the actress noticed in herself was the art of having silent conversations with new moms. 'I can have silent conversation with new moms and they will get exactly what I am saying.'' The actress, who flew down to Cannes all by herself, leaving her daughter back home said, she never feels she is alone. 'The thought and presence of her is always with me. You don't think about yourself very often. That's the biggest thing that has changed. You become outward to that one person and then to everyone else. Everyone's pain, tears, affects you as though it is your child's pain and tears. You look at the world with your child's perspective. You are just wide open.' She shared, 'I think Indian cinema is so large that we are a continent in ourselves. The language, dialect, culture changes every 3 kilometres. The global recognition will come when it has to come. That's not going to change what we are doing and that's not going to change what we are bringing to table in terms of culture: cinema, art, and music.' She added that she does feel proud when Indians get global recognition, but she believes it was something long due. 'I do feel extremely proud when Payal Kapadia won at Cannes. I feel proud when the team of Homebound walked the red carpet. But, I don't feel like it is the beginning. I feel like it is about time that there is a certain awareness. I feel like it is a dam waiting to burst because we have so much to offer.' On the work front, Alia Bhatt was last seen in Jigra. The actress will be next seen in Alpha, the first female lead film in YRF spy universe. Alia is also part of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Love & War, in which she will be seen sharing the screen with her husband Ranbir Kapoor and her Raazi co-star Vicky Kaushal.

Lesson from Cannes: Roll up the red carpet

And so another edition of the Cannes International Film Festival draws to an end: Worthy films have received minutes-long standing ovations, the odds have been shortened for the Palme d'Or favourites, and the usually reticent Robert De Niro has delivered what can only be described as a denunciation of Donald Trump ('philistine president'). While the festival radiated both prestige and glamour, the buzz on the Riviera was muted compared to years past — and it had everything to do with what may have been one of the dullest red carpets in recent years. Immortal cinema may be the heart and soul of the festival but what has long made Cannes, and other red-carpet events, a cynosure of global attention are the celebrities in fabulous frocks and outrageous outfits. This year, a new dress code banning 'nudity' and voluminous gowns at the festival may have somewhat dampened the mood and kept out the more exuberant expressions of fashion. The other complicating factor is an overcrowded red carpet, thanks to the ubiquity of the influencer who scores a ticket to the festival, along with the backing of a brand to sponsor their appearances. Bringing almost as much attention to an event as a B-list actor or pop star, influencers have, indeed, transformed the very idea of celebrity, with once-wary fashion labels proudly announcing their 'collabs'. But the real problem is the red carpet itself. The exclusivity it once guaranteed has vanished in the age of social media. Now any occasion, from a gym session to a mata ki chowki to an airport appearance, becomes a photo-op. And when celeb-spotting is as easy as scrolling through one's Instagram feed, what is lost is mystique, the very essence of glamour.

Alia Bhatt Picks A Breathtaking Schiaparelli Outfit For Cannes Debut In A Risk That Pays Off

Alia Bhatt chose a creation from a line titled 'Icarus' for her debut at Cannes, once the Mecca of films, now the high street of fashion. Alia's debut was the most anticipated moment for India at the Cannes International Film Festival this year. And Bhatt, in the very capable hands of stylist Rhea Kapoor, didn't disappoint at all. Alia chose haute couture and how! A Schiaparelli creation by Daniel Roseberry, from the Maison's Spring/Summer 2025 line, made Alia stand out from among the dime-a-dozen debuts and appearances we saw at Cannes this year. Alia let the sculpted gown do the talking, and made her makeup, along with the outfit, the highlight of her look. The hair and minimal jewellery helped the Schiaparelli creation stand out. Look 11 from Schiaparelli's Spring/Summer couture line 2025, Alia's white body-hugging gown came with a ruffled train of sorts. Schiaparelli creative director Daniel Roseberry named the line 'Icarus', after the Greek tragic hero who took a risk too many, to showcase the limitless risks he was willing to take in haute couture. Alia Bhatt picking a gown from the line was a hat-tip to that very limitless imagination of Roseberry and the French design house. A palette of neutrals and shimmering metallics, Alia's Cannes look felt both fantastical and elegant at the same time. In an earlier interview, Roseberry spoke about the process of creating the Icarus collection. He said that he embarked on a bit of 'time travel' while crafting the pieces. Alia Bhatt's gown was every bit the risk that is traditionally associated with Icarus. And it paid off, we say! Alia's appearance at Cannes comes at the fag end of the festival this year. Over the past two weeks, we have seen a stream of Indian celebrities and influencers gracing the red carpet; to both wows and ewws. Alia Bhatt is at Cannes as a Loreal brand ambassador, along with Cannes veteran Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.
