Cape Cod restaurants: See what's new since last year on the Cape and Islands

New Cape Cod restaurants since last summer? How about three ramen shops, a boho Mexican kitchen in Chatham's old Cumberland Farms, new owners and a new name for Kate's Seafood in Brewster, and a self-serve wine bar at Mashpee Commons - just to name a few? With Memorial Day weekend upon us, it is time to welcome visitors back to Cape Cod and the Islands with news of new restaurants that have opened in the last year. In food news about new accolades for restaurants you may already know and love, USA Today named The Rooftop at Pelham House Resort in Dennis Port as one of the best restaurants in the country, while Sesuit Harbor Cafe in Dennis came in first when Cape Cod Times readers voted in a March Madness-inspired bracket. The Cape Cod Times also named 10 other restaurants we wish had made the USA Today list. Here is a brief introduction of new restaurants on Cape Cod since last summer. If you are a noodle fan, you are in luck: Tiger Ramen opened in Falmouth, Namazu Ramen is now in Chatham and Ukiyo Cape Cod took over the Brewster space formerly occupied by Fare & Just Kitchen. (Former owner Peter Duff is now cooking his vegan dishes at the Family Table Collaborative in Yarmouth.) Codo Mexican Kitchen opened on Main Street in Chatham. 'It's kind of a play on words cause when you meet someone from Chatham and ask where on the Cape they're from, they bend up their arm and point to their elbow. Codo means elbow in Spanish,' said Michael Martir, chief operating officer of Coastal Cuisine, the hospitality group that owns the new Codo Mexican Kitchen, as well as Pate's and Chatham Cut in Chatham, Chapin's Bayside on Taunton Avenue in Dennis, The Doghouse and One-Stop Market in Dennis Port. After 39 years as Kate's Seafood, the popular fish stand run by John and Kathy Ohman at 284 Paines Creek Road in Brewster has new owners and a new name: The Cape House is now owned and run by Robert and Izabelle Crisanti, who say they are keeping the fried fish and scooped ice cream menu for now. J. Bar, a healthy seasonal stop in Harwich Port for the past decade, opened its doors April 4 to a second location in the Shops at 400 Main in Chatham. The Wharf Falmouth, formerly Soprano's Casino by the Sea, has the same owners but a new name and new menu crafted by Chef Gavin Tyson who is focusing on 'French-based by the sea Marseille-styled dishes,' he said on Facebook. The restaurant at 286 Grand Ave. in Falmouth Heights offers spectacular water views. The Daily Brew purchased Silver Lounge in North Falmouth and held a yard sale of memorabilia from the 87-year-old restaurant – although word is the caboose was not for sale. The popular coffee house and cafe closed its doors in Cataumet on May 11. No word yet on when the new location will open. Cymbals Cafe @ The Faraway Nantucket Hotel is open, with house-made doughnuts and Partners Coffee from 8 a.m. to noon Wednesdays through Sundays. You don't have to be a hotel guest to enjoy coffee and doughnuts in the courtyard. Uva, the self-service wine bar that opened in downtown Plymouth in 2019, opened a second location in Mashpee Commons this past January. Just this month, they added a boutique-style shop next door so people can take home wines they enjoyed at the tasting bar. In Dennis, Erica and Adam Dunn, owners of Pheasant Restaurant and Dunn & Sons Wine, are opening Baleine Wine Bar Cape Cod (from the French word for whale) in the space occupied for decades by Harvest Gallery Wine Bar, which permanently closed. Also, theater fans can style the best afternoon or evening out with the help of Cape Cod Times' Dinner & a Show, a feature in which we introduce a local theater production and recommend two nearby restaurants to try. On Monday, May 19, a group came to pay their respects at a makeshift memorial for Ava Lodico, near the site where she had a fatal accident on the night of Saturday, May 17. A group of young people gathered around a tree ringed with bouquets of flowers and covered in photos of the 18-year-old girl. Next to it, a cross bearing Lodico's name had been erected, according to a photo shared by the Cape Cod Times. "I'm just amazed at how many friends she had. I knew she had a lot of friends, but not to this extent," Lodico's mother, Brandi Santos, told ABC affiliate WCVB. "Just seeing the love, I didn't know my daughter had this much of an impact on these kids. I'm just at a loss for words." Elizabeth McLain, one of the teachers in Lodico's English class, brought a flower and said she saw her in her prom dress before she died, the paper reported. "She looked beautiful," she said. Students and staff were offered counseling services when they returned to school on Monday. Authorities responded to the accident around 11 p.m. local time, and Lodico was the only person in the vehicle, according to the Cape Cod Times. Video from the scene of the crash shared by NBC affiliate WBTS showed extensive damage to the front of the vehicle. Lodico died just three weeks before she was set to graduate from Falmouth High School on June 7. A GoFundMe to support Lodico's family has already raised more than $23,000 as of the afternoon of Wednesday, May 21. "She was a very loved friend, older sister, cousin, and daughter to many," the organizer wrote. Read the original article on People

Harwich voted on single use plastics, including water bottles, and fertilizer. Results.

On the second night of town meeting, Harwich residents voted to hire a part-time tree warden. The new tree warden will regulate shade trees in public places and have the authority to remove dangerous and dying trees without a hearing, prune for safety and health, identify planting sites and place new trees, according to the warrant. Non-dangerous tree removal would require a public hearing. The position would be an annual appointment and the cost is estimated to be $25,000. "I would also like to see a tree warden involved in a climate resiliency plan because trees are great for aesthetics but they're also great for controlling the heat we see in the summers," said resident Ann Frechette. "They're also great for controlling greenhouse gases and I think we can think a lot more comprehensively about what a tree warden would do for this town." Harwich town meeting night one results: $9 million school repair approved, more Town meeting concluded on Tuesday when voters gathered at the Harwich community center on Oak Street to finish the warrant. Voters also decided to delete a ban of single use plastic food service containers, utensils, and all associated plastics from the general bylaws. The article was amended to no longer consider deleting a ban of single-use plastic water bottles. Residents did not pass an article asking the Select Board to petition state officials for special legislation to ban using fertilizer in Harwich except for commercial agricultural and residential use of organic fertilizers. Town meeting voters also passed all Community Preservation Act articles. This includes appropriating $500,000 from the Certified Community Housing Reserve to fund the Harwich Affordable Housing Trust and transferring $1.5 million from the Special Purpose Stabilization Fund for Affordable Housing to the Harwich Affordable Housing Trust Fund. Yarmouth votes for more firefighters and board incumbents in town election. Results.

Yarmouth voted to hire five additional fire department staff and to reelect all incumbents to town boards in the May 20 town election. The hiring of four firefighters and a supervisor at a cost of $845,476 was approved by a vote of 1,295 to 590. The question that required a Proposition 2 ½ override was on the ballot following unanimous support to the proposal at the April 29 town meeting. The 2024 town meeting approved hiring four firefighters that did not require an override. A continued shortage of fire department staff, particularly paramedics, to handle the rise in ambulance calls prompted the need for additional staff, town officials said. The fire department staff was not able to keep up with the calls for ambulances this past year, Town Administrator Robert Whritenour said in a previous interview. The department currently had 79 full-time equivalent firefighters before the increase. In a closely contested three-way race, Select Board incumbents Dorcas McGurrin and Elizabeth Argo were reelected for three-year terms over challenger Gerald O'Connell. McGurrin, who has been serving as board chair for the past year, drew 1,084 votes to win a second three-year term. Argo, who joined the board after a special election in December 2024, pulled in the most votes at 1,174 for a three-year term. First-time Select Board challenger O'Connell, had 950 votes. For the uncontested Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School Committee seat, current chair Tomas A. Tolentino was reelected with 1,395 votes. Andrew Hoagland Krauss was reelected to the Yarmouth Housing Authority for a five-year term in an uncontested race, drawing 1,372 votes. The nonbinding public advisory question opposing the airborne discharge of contaminated wastewater from the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station drew 1,600 yes votes and 266 no votes. The election had a low, 8.5% turnout with 1,932 voting of the 22,660 registered voters, according to the town clerk's unofficial results.
