Orlando Pirates set sights on Atlantis-born talent
Orlando Pirates may reignite their pursuit of long-time target Jaedin Rhodes, as preparations for the upcoming season intensify. The Soweto giants, reflecting on a campaign that delivered both triumph and heartbreak, are already making moves in the transfer market. Last season brought the MTN8 Cup back to the Bucs' cabinet, but they fell just short of glory in both the CAF Champions League semifinals and the Nedbank Cup. Despite parting ways with head coach Jose Riveiro, the club remains focused on rebuilding a title-challenging squad. One name firmly back in the mix is 22-year-old Jaedin Rhodes. The Cape Town City midfielder, born in Atlantis, remains a top priority despite an underwhelming season on paper. Rhodes featured in 28 matches across all competitions, scoring three goals and providing a single assist. Still, Pirates remain undeterred. According to a source, they plan to renew efforts to bring Rhodes to Johannesburg during the upcoming transfer window, despite City's past resistance. 'Pirates have always shown an interest in Rhodes, and he fits the physical and technical profile in terms of age as well,' a source told The South African . Cape Town City's current predicament may tip the scales. The Citizens are staring down the barrel of a Promotion/Relegation Play-Off clash, currently set to involve Casric Stars and Orbit College. This uncertainty could make it increasingly difficult for the club to hold onto key players like Rhodes. Making things trickier for the Pirates, however, is Rhodes' contract situation. Just last year, he extended his stay with City by signing a five-year deal, making a potential move more complex and possibly more expensive. 'His numbers are not great but they believe he could do well at Orlando Stadium. The new coach that comes in will also play a role in how he progresses, should he come,' the source added. Despite modest statistics, Pirates see long-term potential in Rhodes. His age, athleticism, and technical style align with the club's long-term strategic goals. Orlando Pirates set to continue midfield revamp with new target!
Orlando Pirates are on a shopping spree and do not look as if they will be slowing down anytime soon. If rumours are to be believed, Pirates have already reached at least six transfer agreements ahead of the new season. One of the positions that Pirates seem keen to revamp ahead of the new campaign, is their midfield. According to reports, the Buccaneers have transfer agreements in place to sign Sihle Nduli and Sinoxolo Kwayiba. Nduli would be arriving from Stellenbosch FC as a free agent, while Kwayiba is set to join from Chippa United. These moves seem to already be having a domino effect on the current Pirates midfield. It is believed that the Buccaneers are set to part ways with at least four central midfielders to make room. One confirmed being Miguel Timm, with Goodman Mosele also reported to be on his way out. Now according to their midfielder overhaul is set to take them back to Cape Town City star Jaedin Rhodes. 'One of those reinforcements could be a long-time target, Jaedin Rhodes. Although the 22-year-old has endured an underwhelming season with Cape Town City, he remains a high priority on the Buccaneers' list. The club has been met with resistance by City in previous attempts to lure Rhodes to Gauteng, but according to sources, will try once more in the upcoming window. Complicating matters will be the Citizens' peculiar situation.' Wrote the publication. Pirates will also be cognisant of the fact the Rhodes only recently signed a new five-year deal with City but what could end up being an advantage to them, is if the Citizens end up getting relegated. That could then force their owner John Comitis to cash in on some of his biggest assets. Pirates fans would you welcome the signing of Rhodes? Let us know by clicking on the comment tab. PSL transfer news: Witbooi wanted in London; Saleng latest
There's plenty of business happening in the PSL ahead of the upcoming winter window. A flurry of stars is expected to jump ships, including Orlando Pirates winger Monnapule Saleng, who hasn't featured for nearly six months amid a hiatus over salary demands. The 27-year-old's future in Soweto seems all but voided. Still, no external clubs have yet to show interest, presumably waiting on the off chance that the two parties agree to terminate the contract, meaning he would become a free agent. Meanwhile, 16-year-old phenom Emile Witbooi has piqued Chelsea's attention. The London outfit has reportedly invited the youngster for a second assessment, insinuating Enzo Maresca's side to be very interested in the Cape Town City star. Witbooi earned his professional debut for the Mother City side in the second half of this season. He now has three PSL appearances to his name. 'Chelsea have made enquiries if he can go back for further training and assessment,' an inside source revealed. 'It's believed that they are looking at integrating him into their Under-18 team so that he can move through the ranks as he grows. It's believed that they were impressed when he was last there and they have been keeping tabs on his progress and that's why they still need him.' However, an additional source doesn't see a move happening before the Novemeber's U-17 World Cup in Qatar. 'I don't think even if Cape Town City want him to go it could be now or soon as they are still monitoring other interest from Europe as well. They are believed to want to see what will happen at the Under-17 FIFA World Cup in Qatar later this year. Though at the moment Chelsea are in the forefront,' the second insider revealed. City boss Comitis weighs legal action over delayed SuperSport-Arrows game
Cape Town City boss John Comitis is seeking legal advice on whether to challenge the Premier Soccer League's (PSL) decision to resume the SuperSport United v Golden Arrows Betway Premiership match in the second half on Thursday. The second 45 minutes will be played at Lucas Moripe Stadium (12pm), three months after the fixture was called off due to a power failure at half time with the score at 1-1. The game on February 23 was halted due to a lights failure related to load-shedding at the Tshwane venue, but PSL rules indicate is should have resumed within 48 hours, according to Article 14.16. 'Should a match be abandoned by the referee due to insufficient illumination from the floodlights, then the remaining minutes of the game will be resumed on a date and at a time and venue agreed upon between the participating member clubs immediately upon the abandonment of the match,' the rule states.
