CATS bus drivers to return to work after strike, full services resume Sunday

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — The Capital Area Transit System has announced that its bus drivers will return to work on Sunday, March 9, and full bus services will resume across Baton Rouge. After negotiation talks, CATS and the local transit union will go to interest arbitration. This step aims to solve contract issues and help normal operations return, according to a news release. Officials said they are ready to bring back reliable public transportation for all riders, as the strike ends tomorrow. CATS workers went on strike, demanding a fair contract and improved working conditions. 'We're pleased to have our drivers back on the job, and services will return to normal tomorrow,' said Theo Richards, CEO of CATS. 'We appreciate the patience of our passengers and are confident that arbitration will resolve the issues fairly.' CATS and the union will use a neutral third-party arbitrator to resolve contract issues, a news release said. This choice seeks a fair and clear process. It does not aim for a final agreement right now. Southern University suspends Greek life recruitment after student's hazing death CATS bus services will run on their usual schedules starting Sunday. Baton Rouge bus drivers' strike: Union leaders provide update

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Union leaders provided an update Thursday afternoon on the ongoing Baton Rouge bus drivers' strike, which began earlier this week. Bus operators began striking early Monday morning, citing demands for fair wages, safer working conditions, and respect. Amalgamated Transit Union senior organizer Stanley Smalls said bus drivers are ready to go back to work by tomorrow if Capital Area Transit System (CATS) CEO Theo Richards agrees to no retaliation against workers and work would continue under the old contract until issues are resolved. 'I'm sure whenever we can resolve this matter, everybody's going to be happy, passengers and operators,' Smalls said. Smalls described a letter received from Richards on Thursday as 'ambiguous.' He said a letter and documents for signature were sent back to ensure that workers are not harmed or retaliated against and that Richards understands that work would continue under the old contract. 'Despite what they're telling the media, the service has been terrible,' Smalls said, adding that he believes it's dangerous to have inexperienced operators on the roadways. Despite the strike, Capital Area Transit System (CATS) has stated that bus services will continue to operate. Riders are encouraged to check the CATS website for schedule updates.
