TNT Blackout During Capitals-Canadiens Game 4 Sparks Strong Fan Reaction
Tensions are running high between the Washington Capitals and the Montreal Canadiens as they enter Game 4 of the opening round of the NHL playoffs. The Canadiens crushed Washington 6-3 in Game 3 during which a chaotic brawl between Capitals veteran Tom Wilson and Montreal's Josh Anderson spilled over into the bench. Advertisement Adding even more drama, both team's goalies left Game 3 with injuries. While Capitals goaltender Logan Thompson made a surprising return to start in Game 4 after suffering what looked like a severe left leg injury, Canadiens starter Sam Montembeault remained out. Capitals goalie Logan Thompson (48) sprays water on his face during a break against the Kirouac-Imagn Images While neither team scored in the first period, Dylan Strome scored his second goal of the series to give the Capitals a 1-0 lead in the second period. However, Washington was on a power play with about 15 minutes left in the middle frame when TNT's feed suddenly went dark. The outage affected all viewers watching from Los Angeles to New York. Advertisement One man posted, "It appears that TNT has continued their attempts to save money by not showing the Capitals and Canadians game at all." While the game continued, TBS continued to air commercials. One fan added, "Just give us @Sportsnet feed please @NHLonTNT is a joke." TNT Sports apologized for the "technical difficulties" before eventually switching to Sportsnet's feed so viewers watching at home could continue to tune in, which most fans loved. Keith Olbermann posted, "Great news: the Turner broadcast from Montreal just vanished and was replaced by SportsNet... OK, Turner, how much do I have to pay for you to make this permanent? I've got $50 in cash right here - AMERICAN MONEY." Advertisement Sharks reporter Max Miller commented, "It should speak volumes how much better Sportsnet's audio mixing is than TNT/ESPN. With TNT/TBS feed down the Sportsnet feed of WSH v. MTL is being used." One fan wrote added, "No need for TBS to go back to their coverage when their 'technical difficulties' have been resolved for this Caps/Habs game. Just keep the Sportsnet feed. Thank you." One man wrote, "I am loving the SportsNet broadcast of Capitals/Canadiens. Can feel the excitement and energy." With about five minutes left in the second period, however, TNT Sports' feed returned. Alex Ovechkin Claims Controversial Moment Changed Capitals-Canadiens Series
The Washington Capitals eliminated the Montreal Canadiens in five games, winning 4-1 on Wednesday at Capital One Arena to reach the second round for the first time since they won the Stanley Cup in 2018. In the minds of many Capitals, as revealed following the Game 5 victory, the series may have been won 72 hours earlier in a highly controversial moment involving Tom Wilson. Advertisement Back in Game 4, Wilson leveled the Canadiens' Alexandre Carrier with the Capitals trailing 2-1 in the game and leading the first-round series 2-1 over the Habs. With Wilson's hit unpenalized, the play went on, and Washington immediately scored the game-tying goal before ultimately earning the third win of the series, moving up to a 3-1 lead over Montreal. Asked about the moment that changed the series and swung them in Washington's favor, team captain Alex Ovechkin didn't hesitate. 'You know my answer,' Alex Ovechkin said. 'Game 4. Third period. Tom Wilson.' 'I think that's why everybody loves the sport of hockey,' Wilson said. 'There's guys on both sides of the puck that are willing to do whatever they have to for their team.' Advertisement On Wednesday, Ovechkin opened the scoring in Game 5 on the power play. 'They don't make them like him anymore,' Wilson said of Ovechkin. 'He's doing it all right now.' Ovechkin returned the praise. 'We won a series and we're going to enjoy it tonight,' he said. 'Tomorrow it's a new day.' Jakob Chychrun added another just over two minutes later, and Wilson gave the Capitals a 3–0 cushion with a second-period goal. Emil Heineman briefly cut into the lead before Duhaime's empty-netter sealed Washington's first home-ice series win in a decade. Sylvanie-Imagn Images Wilson's hit stirred controversy, drawing criticism from Montreal, but the Capitals carried the momentum of that play into the next two games, halting Montreal's comeback attempt after winning Game 3. Advertisement "We knew that they were gonna play kind of cheap and try and get us off our game," Wilson said. "So it got crazy at times. But that's why hockey's so fun, and that's why we all love the sport and we love playing and love competing." The Capitals now prepare for a second-round matchup with the Carolina Hurricanes, with Game 1 taking place in Washington at an unknown date but in the next few days. Capitals Make Historic Alex Ovechkin Announcement During Canadiens Game
The Washington Capitals can officially end the Montreal Canadiens' playoff run with a Game 5 win on April 30. After a dominant 4-2 victory at the Bell Centre in Game 4, the series returns to the Capital One Center on Wednesday. 'I think that the start of the game is going to be important from an overall standpoint of what you expect from the Montreal Canadiens,' says Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery told reporters. Advertisement "They're going to be very comfortable in this environment and facing elimination.. You can tell they've been through it... We expect their best punch today, and we're going to need to be ready and we're going to have [be] our best tonight." Washington Capitals left wing Alex Kirouac-Imagn Images Capitals star Alex Ovechkin heard his message loud and clear. With 10:48 left in the first period, Ovechkin put the first goal on the board during a power play to give Washington a 1-0 lead. The Capitals announced, "With his goal, Ovechkin ties Mario Lemieux (76) for the 12th-most playoff goals in NHL history." The 39-year-old now four goals during this playoff series, tied for fifth among all skaters in the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs. If Ovechkin score two more goals, he'll tie Jaromir Jagr for the 11th most playoff goals. Three more goals and he'll tie with Jean Beliveau for 10th. The veteran team captain has been on fire this season, breaking Wayne Gretzky's all-time record (894 goals) with career goal No. 895 earlier this month. He added three more goals before the regular season ended. Advertisement If the Capitals defeat the Canadiens on Wednesday night, Ovechkin and Co. will become the second team after the Carolina Hurricanes to punch their ticket to the next round. If Washington loses to the Canadiens, Game 6 is scheduled for Friday, May 2. Related: Insane Fight During Capitals-Canadiens Game 3 Leaves Fans Stunned

A bad day for superstars, and a draft prankster gets revealed
The Pulse Newsletter 📣 | This is The Athletic's daily sports newsletter. Sign up here to receive The Pulse directly in your inbox. Good morning! Don't fight a gorilla today. The first rounds of the NBA and NHL playoffs are waning. Only one series is over, but yesterday's scoreboard was most consequential. It was also brutal on some of both sports' biggest names. Quickly: Elsewhere in hoops: The Knicks are up 3-1 thanks in part to a bad call late in their win over the Pistons, while the Celtics skated past the Magic to go up 3-1 in that series. Full NBA takeaways are here. On to the ice: We have two other 3-1 series (Capitals-Canadiens and Hurricanes-Devils) after last night's action, too. Tune in to Red Light, our new hockey newsletter, for more later this morning. Let's keep moving: Two moments yesterday, both from the world of football, made me wince harder than I have in months. Cringe with me: 1. The truth behind the Shedeur prank Amid all the coverage of Shedeur Sanders' draft slide, you may have missed the story of two college kids prank-calling Sanders during the second round of the draft, pretending to be Saints general manager Mickey Loomis. Sanders, however, purchased that phone for use during the draft only and sent the number to NFL teams. Yesterday, we found out the prank was made possible by 21-year-old Jax Ulbrich, son of Falcons defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich, who apparently cribbed the number from his father's tablet. Advertisement Everyone does stupid stuff at 21, but man, that was brutal, especially to someone in a vulnerable spot as the entire sporting world talks about why teams don't like him. Just … woof. 2. Bill Belichick's bizarre PR flop Have you ever watched 'CBS Sunday Morning'? It's a delightful program, full of uplifting stories meant to make you smile the day before a new week begins. Yesterday, the program aired an interview with North Carolina coach Bill Belichick, 73, whose 24-year-old girlfriend was a 'constant presence' in the interview, according to CBS, and notably nixed a question about how she and Belichick met. The clip caused a firestorm across social media yesterday, naturally, and while someone's private relationship is their own business, this one has a way of entering the spotlight over and over. If you haven't already, it's worth reading Matt Baker's story on Hudson's role at UNC. Cringe over. Moving on. Guardians apologize to Duran The Cleveland Guardians issued an apology to Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran after a fan taunted Duran yesterday. Duran had to be held back by teammates and coaches in an ensuing shouting match. It comes just weeks after Duran opened up about a suicide attempt, which was incredibly brave and impactful. Read more on the fan incident here. Liverpool caps dream year with blowout We've known the result for a while now, but the moment was spectacular nonetheless. Liverpool are Premier League champions after a 5-1 rout of Tottenham Hotspur yesterday, winning a title a year after legendary coach Jurgen Klopp left. New manager Arne Slot navigated those waters, a personnel mess with Mohamed Salah's contract quagmire and a brutal EPL schedule to clinch first with four games left. Scenes, as they say. Behind Jake Guentzel, Tampa is back in this series. Let's see how the defending champs respond. 📺 NBA: Rockets at Warriors 10 p.m. ET on TNT/Max I remain stunned that the Warriors played so well without Jimmy Butler in Game 3, but then I remember Steph Curry was playing and it all makes sense. Butler should be back for this one. Huge, huge game. Get tickets to games like these here. Tonight, the Marlins are in Los Angeles to play the Dodgers — the lowest payroll in baseball ($69 million) plays its highest ($476 million). Andy McCullough traveled to Miami to help explain one of the sport's biggest problems. Worth your time today. We have plenty more NFL Draft to discuss. First: Dane Brugler ranked all classes from No. 1-32. We'll have more on this tomorrow. Also, Scott Dochterman broke down all 257 picks by college conference and team. See the tabulations here.
