Downtown Minneapolis hotel reopens after $40 million renovation
A Downtown Minneapolis hotel reopened this week after a $40 million renovation closed its doors for six months. The Sheraton Minneapolis Downtown Convention Center, which sits on the site of the historic Capp Towers Motor Hotel, reopened on Thursday, May 21. Until it was closed in November, the hotel was known as the Millennium Hotel Minneapolis. The 14-story hotel sits at the doorstep of the Minneapolis Convention Center and features 321 guest rooms as well as 19 event spaces, the company revealed in an announcement. It also added a pair of dining concepts and an indoor pool as part of the refresh. The renovation was completed with the architecture and design firm Gensler, which added many new amenities. That includes The Community Table, a communal workspace; The Booths, a series of soundproof spaces for finding some quiet or making calls; and The Studios, bright studios for small group meetings. The new restaurants include Esther's Table, which is named for Esther Capp, the matriarch of the Capp family, which owns and operates the hotel. The Sheraton announcement said the restaurant, helmed by Chef Keven Kvalsten, will focus on seasonal, Midwest-inspired cuisine. Meanwhile, the lobby features &More by Sheraton, which serves an all-day menu that includes coffee and cocktails.

Trucks, dancers, bagpipes, even pugs delight downtown Spokane St. Patrick's Day crowd
Mar. 15—The clouds above downtown Spokane were all bark and no bite, giving way to a dry, but chilly, St. Patrick's Day Parade Saturday. Decked out in green clothing and beads, parade attendees lined the streets on the north end of downtown watching an array of vehicles, floats, dancers and even pugs while listening to the Scottish bagpipe band, Angus Scott Pipe Band, near the front of the procession. Many parade participants passed out candy to children along the curbs while some handed out green-beaded necklaces. Wearing a green top hat with shamrocks on it, Shelli Regis brought her 8-year-old son, Wyatt Capp, to the parade for the first time in about seven years. Capp was too young to remember the first experience, she said. "I thought, why not?" Regis said. "Even if the weather's bad, it doesn't matter. Just wanted to come and celebrate the Irish tradition of St. Patrick's Day." Temperatures stayed in the low 40s as the sun partially poked through the clouds at times. The wind picked up toward the end of the parade. Regis and Capp watched from Spokane Falls Boulevard near O'Doherty's Irish Grille, which was packed with patio patrons. Meanwhile, the Stevens family encountered snow during its hour-plus drive from Palouse, Washington, to watch the parade. "We're kind of dedicated," said Scott Stevens, who attends the March parade with his wife, Mary, and two children, Hudson and Roslyn, each year. The family sat in chairs on Main Avenue near Washington Street. "It's like the spring kickoff," Scott Stevens said. Hudson, an 8-year-old who sported a long, fake orange beard, said he loves collecting candy during the procession. As for his new St. Patrick's Day beard, "I might save it," he said. The Spokane Pug Group, a social group of pug lovers who meet up with other pug owners and their furry friends, was one of the crowd favorites. Drawing several "aww" reactions from attendees, the pugs, some dressed in green, meandered through the downtown streets with their owners. Brandon Leeworthy's 15-year-old pug, Max, who wore a velvet, green St. Patrick's Day-themed coat, enjoyed the parade from a stroller Leeworthy pushed down the street. Jennifer Lusk walked with two of her pugs in the parade. Lusk said the pug group participates in the parade every year. Children are always asking to pet the pugs, she said. "At this point, we've been in it every year, so they know pugs are coming eventually," Leeworthy said of the crowd.

Daylight saving time: Where Arkansas efforts to ‘lock the clocks' stands
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — Arkansans will soon lose one hour of sleep as the clocks spring forward on March 9, marking the start of daylight saving time. However, some Arkansas lawmakers are attempting to 'lock the clocks' and end the twice-a-year time change. Arkansas is one of at least 31 states with bills introduced in their current legislation regarding time change, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. One bill currently in the Arkansas legislature, House Bill 1069, would keep standard time year-round and eliminate daylight saving time. The bill would allow state employees the option to adjust their work schedule one hour earlier during the portion of the year when other states observe daylight saving time. HB1069 is sponsored by Rep. Stephen Meeks (R-Greenbrier), and if passed, Arkansas would join Arizona and Hawaii as the only states to not observe daylight saving time. As of March 6, the bill remains in the House with no updates since Feb. 13. This bill is not the only attempt by Arkansas lawmakers to end the time change in the Natural State. Daylight saving time 2025: These states are trying to 'lock the clocks' State Rep. Sarah Capp (R-Ozark) filed House Bill 1368 in February 2019, which would adopt year-round standard time and eliminate daylight saving time in Arkansas. However, Capp withdrew the bill 23 days after filing it. Rep. Johnny Rye (R-Trumann) filed House Bill 1017 in 2020, the exact opposite of Capp's bill. Daylight saving time would be adopted year-round and standard time would go away. The bill passed the House in February 2021 by a 71-24 vote but died in a Senate committee meeting in October of that year. Rye tried again in 2022 with House Bill 1039, which would have also adopted daylight saving time. One month later, Rye withdrew the bill. Meeks made an attempt in 2023 with House Bill 1568. The bill would have eliminated daylight saving time and observed standard time year-round. The bill was withdrawn three weeks later. Another attempt made in 2023 was done by Rep. R. Scott Richardson (R-Bentonville) and co-sponsored by Rep. Wayne Long (R-Bradford) with House Bill 1104. It was also withdrawn about two weeks after it was filed. Whichever Arkansans prefer, the clocks will be turned back an hour on Sunday. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
