Chiesa speaks out on Liverpool future after being 'catapulted to another planet'

Liverpool forward Federico Chiesa has hinted he could stay at Anfield this summer despite a frustrating first season with the Reds, and has opened up on his relationship with Arne Slot Despite a challenging first season with Liverpool, Federico Chiesa remains open to continuing his stint at Anfield. The Italian winger only made 14 appearances during his maiden Reds campaign, with 10 of those coming from the bench. Although Chiesa bagged a Premier League winners medal he had limited time on the pitch, with his sole start coming in a largely ceremonial match at Brighton and Hove Albion with the title already in the bag. ‌ The 27-year-old has been persistently linked with a move back to Serie A, and Chiesa hinted earlier this week that an Italian homecoming might be an option in the upcoming transfer window. ‌ However in a new interview the Italian has expressed contentment at the prospect of remaining on Merseyside, reflecting positively on his decision to move to Liverpool. "The year is over. But it's an experience I would do again," Chiesa told Corriere dello Sport, via the Liverpool Echo. "Soon I will sit down at the table with the club, (my agent) Fali (Ramadani) and my family to find the best solution. I wouldn't mind staying in Liverpool at all." The Italian transferred from Juventus to Liverpool last August for an initial fee of £10million after being pushed aside by the Italian heavyweights. Although joining Liverpool came with its hurdles, including injury and fitness woes during the early season, Chiesa seems ready to discuss his future with optimism. The Italian star openly expressed his frustration about not getting enough game time but was quick to avoid criticising Arne Slot for his selection decisions, acknowledging that a player has to accept such scenarios as part of the profession. ‌ "You accept the choices as a professional and you move on," he said, reflecting on his challenging adaptation period after joining Liverpool. "In the first few months there were many difficulties." Admitting to the stark transition, he added: "If you think that I arrived in Liverpool on August 26 and found myself catapulted to another planet, with other teammates, without having trained with them, but with a trainer, no friendlies, nothing. ‌ "And, if you remember, in the autumn Liverpool were going three times as fast as the others, an incredible intensity. "Up until the match against PSG, Liverpool was ahead of everyone, in the semi-final of Carabao and among the favourites in the Champions League, which PSG won. Could I start to discuss the choices of Slot who has always been very respectful towards me, as well as the club? ‌ "(I was up against) the Ballon d'Or, or one of the candidates for the award (in Mohamed Salah). "(On the left) there were Luis Diaz and (Cody) Gakpo. Slot also made me play as a nine. It was Max (Allegri) who changed my position, suggesting that I move to a second striker to score more, and I scored my goals. "The desire to play was there, I put it aside, I understood the situation. I put aside every form of individualism."

Share 1 min Jacob Murphy takes advantage of slip in the Palace defence to whip in a delicious cross – Alexander Isak can't get a head on it but the hosts have a corner … Share Newcastle kick us off, both sides in their home kits. Let's play! Share Crystal Palace have been strong on the road this season, six wins and four losses in their 15 away league games. The two teams are out and doing their handshakes. Share I'm looking forward to the battle of the centre-forwards. Jean Philipe-Mateta had a quiet first half of the season after returning from Olympic duty with France but has nine league goals since the start of 2025. Alexander Isak has gone a whole two games without a goal, which simply means he's due: the Swede has 20 goals in the league this campaign. He won't pass Mo Salah on 27, but Erling Haaland, on 21, is there for the taking. Share Alan Pardew is on punditry duty for Sky, having managed both teams. Let's hit the dance floor: Share Just in case you don't want to keep me company. Share Newcastle (4-3-3): Pope; Trippier, Schär, Burn, Livramento; Guimarães, Tonali, Joelinton; Murphy, Isak, Barnes. Subs: Dubravka, Wilson, Gordon, Targett, Krafth, Osula, Willock, Longstaff, Miley. Crystal Palace (3-4-2-1): Henderson; Richards, Lacroix, Guéhi; Muñoz, Lerma, Hughes, Mitchell; Sarr, Eze; Mateta. Subs: Turner, Nketiah, Franca, Clyne, Kamada, Wharton, Esse, Chilwell, Devenny. Newcastle are unchanged; no need to tamper with a winning formula. Crystal Palace welcome back Marc Guéhi and Will Hughes from suspensions. Share Hello, hello, hello and welcome to the big one (forget that Bernabéu nonsense – it's over). Crystal Palace may have conceded five in Manchester on the weekend, but these are promising times for them and Newcastle. Oliver Glasner's side still have European hopes, having won four of their last six league games, and have an FA Cup semi-final against Aston Villa to look forward to. 'I think we are in one of the best situations in Crystal Palace's history now,' said Glasner, 'being mid-April and not having to look at what happens behind you and being a little bit worried about getting relegated.' Newcastle are still enjoying that sweet glow of Carabao success, three wins following that night at Wembley, Manchester United swept aside with ease. They look primed for Champions League football, moving above Nottingham Forest with victory tonight. The dampener has been the health of Eddie Howe, who is recovering from pneumonia. Jason Tindall will take charge again this evening on the touchline and may be in place for the rest of the season. Kick-off's at 7.30pm BST. Drop me a line with all your thoughts, queries, concerns, hopes, dreams, whatever suits. Share

Arne Slot ponders Mohamed Salah 'compliment' as Liverpool goalless streak continues

Arne Slot said that it is a reflection of just how good Mohamed Salah has been this season that people are taking notice of him being on a four-game goalless run for Liverpool. The Egypt international has scored 32 goals this term but his only goals in his last seven appearances for the Reds came from the penalty spot against Southampton last month. Salah drew another blank at Craven Cottage on Sunday as Liverpool fell to a 3-2 defeat by Fulham, and he missed a presentable opportunity when the Reds were 3-1 down, sending a half-volley well over the crossbar with his right foot from eight yards out. READ MORE: Liverpool player ratings, winners and losers vs Fulham as Mohamed Salah and 2 more poor READ MORE: How many points Liverpool needs and when it can win Premier League title after Fulham loss Despite his star man's struggles of late, Slot is not concerned by Salah's drop in form. He told the BBC: "Maybe he should see it as a compliment [that people are talking about it] because his numbers were not normal [when he was scoring]. The good thing about Mo is he knows what kjnd of player he is. Mo will show up again, I don't worry about that." Slot also addressed Salah's recent goal drought during his pre-match press conference, explaining that the difficulty of Liverpool's fixtures had been a contributing factor to the forward struggling to find the net. "Sometimes the fixture list is more difficult than at other periods," Slot said. "PSG are one of the best teams in Europe at the moment. Newcastle were all over us in the Carabao final and Everton were so difficult with 10 people in their own 18-yard box all the time. "I know Mo, he lives for goals. It would be weird if he was happy not scoring but probably his biggest quality is he can play a poor game and still score so his head is not all over the place. "That is why he scores so many, because he wants it so much. Yes, there were probably periods this season he smiled a bit more but that's not just him, it's all the players." Salah's last club goal from open play came at the Etihad Stadium, when he scored in the first half of a 2-0 victory over Manchester City on February 23. At that point, he was the firm favorite to win the 2025 Ballon d'Or but his chances have diminished in recent weeks as a result of Liverpool's Champions League exit. Barcelona star Raphinha and Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappe are now the joint favorites, with Salah the fourth favorite behind Ousmane Dembele, who is enjoying a brilliant season with Paris Saint-Germain.

Ange Postecoglou ‘not disrespected' by Mauricio Pochettino's Tottenham return hopes

Ange Postecoglou says he 'did not feel disrespected' by Mauricio Pochettino's comments about hoping to return to manage Tottenham Hotspur in the future. Pochettino spent five years at Spurs and guided them to the 2019 Champions League final which they lost to Liverpool. The Argentine spent the 2023-24 campaign in charge of their rivals Chelsea but is now the head coach of the United States men's national team. Advertisement Last month, Pochettino told reporters he would like to return to Spurs to fulfil his dream of winning a trophy with them. 'In the bottom of my heart I still feel the same,' the 53-year-old said. 'I would like one day to come back. Not because of my ego. It is because my feeling is that I would like one day to win with Tottenham. We were so close, and it was so painful.' Postecoglou was asked about Pochettino's comments before Spurs' game against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Thursday. 'Mauricio, if he wants to come back one day I hope it happens for him,' Postecoglou said. 'We all have dreams and aspirations — if that is what he wants. You're suggesting he is trying to put pressure on me? 'I don't feel disrespected. If you ask Mauricio that question directly you will get a pretty clear answer as to what his intent was. Again, nothing for me to be consumed with. More focused on making sure we try to win tomorrow night.' Postecoglou joined Spurs in June 2023 and guided them to a fifth-placed finish in the Premier League in his first season. The Australian's second year in charge has been a lot more difficult with Tottenham suffering from an injury crisis and losing more than half of their league games. They are 14th in the table and 15 points behind fourth-placed Chelsea. After exiting the Carabao and FA Cup, Tottenham's only chance of lifting silverware this season, and qualifying for the Champions League, is by winning the Europa League. They face Eintracht Frankfurt in the first leg of their quarter-final tie next week. The Athletic reported on Thursday that Spurs had made Bournemouth's head coach Andoni Iraola their top target if they decide to part company with Postecoglou. The 59-year-old will still have one year left on his Spurs contract this summer, with the option of a further 12 months, but his future is in serious doubt beyond this season. Advertisement Postecoglou said that he does not pay any attention to rumours about his future. 'I don't deal with it mate,' Postecoglou said. 'I know what my responsibilities are. I'm sure if the club decides to go in a different direction there are some outstanding candidates out there for it. Maybe somebody will think 'Ange Postecoglou is not a bad coach, maybe we will take a punt on him.' 'It doesn't rock my world. It doesn't consume me. I'm here. I'm passionate about what we are doing. I was brought into change the way the club plays, rejuvenate the squad, bring success and I'm focused on that. That's what I will keep doing.' Tottenham have been handed a boost ahead of a crucial stage of the season as Richarlison is back in training and could be available to face Southampton this weekend while Kevin Danso and Dejan Kulusevski are 'progressing well' from foot and hamstring injuries respectively.
