ASCENT's Technology Expo aims to inspire careers in STEM fields

BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – Gadgets and gizmos galore, the ASCENT program hosted its third annual Technology Expo at Florida State University, Panama City, on Saturday. ASCENT stands for Advancing Science and Career Education in New Technologies. It's a $23 million program, partially funded by Triumph Gulf Coast and Florida State University, Panama City. The program is designed to build up the IT and cybersecurity workforce. Ascent built a K-12 program for students, serving eight coastal counties on the Gulf Coast that were impacted by the BP oil spill. The tech expo provides a variety of STEM activities to get kids interested in technology. They can launch a bottle rocket, play Minecraft, visit the mobile planetarium, and operate sphere bots. The activities help prepare kids for the future of artificial intelligence. Car crash turns into shooting investigation in Okaloosa County 'We all are going to rely on these kids to keep our information secure and work for the companies that we use every day. And so getting them started and getting them excited, you know, helping them to learn how to utilize A.I. appropriately,' FSU Panama City Ascent K-12 Program Manager Brianne Biddle said. 'A.I. is going to take over the world. But at the same time, you have to have somebody that knows how to speak to it because it can't do it alone. And that's one of the things that this tech expo is supposed to do. It teaches people how to utilize things like A.I., how to utilize systems engineering, how to where electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, where that fits in your day-to-day life,' FSU Panama City Ascent Program Director Duriel Crittenden said. The tech expo also showcases local integrated technology clubs. Students can show off the projects they've been working on throughout the school year, such as their self-made robots. While on campus, students can learn more about the engineering programs offered at FSU Panama City. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Exchange Club of Columbia County awards 6 seniors with scholarships

COLUMBIA COUNTY, Ga (WJBF)- Several local high school seniors rewarded for their hard work by the Exchange Club of Columbia County Thursday. The organization awarded scholarships at its annual breakfast. 'Anything that we can do to help these students go and further their education. When you hear these students and see them, they are amazing and the things that they are going to do in our community are just incredible. And so we want to support them in every way that we can,' said Phyllis Salazar, President of the Exchange Club of Columbia County. Every year the Exchange Club of Columbia County gives scholarships to 6 seniors. Salazar added that she's always impressed by the applicants and their achievements. 'These kids excel in their educational pursuits. I mean, these are top students, and yet they're also volunteering. They are giving so much back to the community. They're just involved in so many things. And it's just incredible.' One senior from each Columbia County high school is awarded a Career, Technical, and Agriculture Education (CTAE) scholarship towards their next steps. This year's winners include Thomas Murilla-Bivins from Evans High School, Adelyn Swogger from Greenbrier, Kashiya Moore from Grovetown high, Claire Duffie from Harlem and Campbell Harison from Lakeside. One student is awarded the 'Accepting the Challenge of Excellence' scholarship for overcoming major hardships. This year, the award went to Ella Cassedy from Harlem High School, who battled and beat cancer. 'It was after seven months of waking up in the middle night with tremendous jaw pain that medicine couldn't help. We ended up going– after going to like dentist to dentist, we went to the Dental College of Georgia, and they ended up biopsying the area and sent us back over to the Children's Hospital where we then found out that it was leukemia,' she said. Cassedy spent most of her freshman year at harlem homebound, completing her schoolwork while going through chemo treatments. Despite losing her hair and weakness from treatment she went back to school, even making the cheer team. She said the support she received from her classmates meant everything. 'I experienced a lot of support, which I was just shocked from the amount of people I didn't even know coming up in support of me, whether it be like through a meal train or giving gift cards or money. It was just crazy, you know, support that I had.' Cassedy will attend Augusta University after graduation and major in Biology. Then she hopes to move on the the Dental College of Georgia and work towards becoming a dentist. It's a dream inspired by her journey fighting cancer. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. MISD releases TEA ratings

Apr. 23—After two years of legal proceedings, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) is now allowed to release official ratings for the 2022-2023 school year. The 2023 Accountability Ratings are now official and eligible for release. In August of 2024, Midland ISD was one of four districts at the time to release its projected 2023 and 2024 ratings in an effort to be transparent with the community. The 2024 projected A-F ratings were verified by TEA. With the official release of the 2023 ratings set to be made available to the public April 24, the district is pleased to report that no school action plans are required at this time. As part of the release of 2023 ratings, TEA also plans to share "what if" ratings for 2022 which were presented to the public at a June 2023 special board meeting. In 2023, state testing and the accountability system underwent drastic changes that introduced significantly higher performance standards, leading to broad expectations that many districts across Texas may see a drop in their overall scores. Ratings are determined using several key indicators, including STAAR results, graduation rates, and College, Career, and Military Readiness (CCMR). The "what if" ratings offer an estimate of how schools and districts would have performed under the revised accountability framework implemented in 2023 if 2022 accountability metrics would have been in place, a news release said. Despite the delay and changes to the assessment and accountability system, MISD continues to make strides, the release said. When students took the 2023 STAAR assessment, Stephanie Howard had been serving as superintendent for just three months. Although the 2023 ratings were withheld due to the pending litigation, MISD immediately leveraged available data to realign priorities, launch targeted improvement efforts, and implemented a strategic plan based on the needs in the district. MISD, and the majority of other districts across the state, saw a decline in ratings from 2022. Based on its internal projections that have been verified by TEA, and a result of the early school improvement actions, 2024 projected ratings are showing 66% of campuses improved or maintained their overall rating. Fifteen campuses are projected to be A/B rated campuses — up from seven in 2023. Sixteen campuses improved at least one letter grade, and five campuses improved by two or more letter grades. Accountability ratings offer a roadmap for continuous improvement, helping us stay focused on what matters most—student success," Stephanie said in the release. "We remain committed to our North Star Goal of ensuring that 70% of MISD students attend an A or B-rated school by 2028. We are proud of the progress we have made and even more determined to keep moving forward."
