Dad Going To Work Told 'Wait' by Kids—Unprepared for What Ring Cam Captures
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A father heading out to work was stopped in his tracks after hearing "Wait!" coming from behind him. The balance between life and work is hard enough for any adult to maintain, but there's an added layer of guilt for parents. Sadly, for many parents, sacrifices are required, and work can often get in the way of always being engaged with their child's life. A 2018 Harris Poll of just over 1,000 U.S. adults in full-time work commissioned by job search platform CareerBuilder found that 38 percent had "missed a significant event in their child's life due to work in the last year." Brandon, a father-of-two from Port Saint Lucie, Florida, might not necessarily be missing a significant event, but every morning missed with his kids feels significant. "I lost my dad earlier this year, and it made me realize how important it is to create as many happy memories as I can," he told Ring. That's what made the moment recently captured on his doorbell camera on a random Tuesday morning in March so special. For Brandon, mornings are usually the worst part of his day. "The hardest part of my day is leaving my kids," he said. "Sometimes they cry and beg me not to go, and it breaks my heart." This particular morning was different, though. As the video recorded by Ring and subsequently shared with Newsweek shows, as Brandon headed out the door and down the path toward the sidewalk, he was stopped in his tracks by the sound of a voice. It was his son shouting, "Wait!" His son wanted "one more hug" before his dad left for the day. "Of course, I gave it to him," he said. Though going to work was undoubtedly a wrench for this devoted dad, that hug was just motivation he needed before heading out for the day. "It's moments like these that remind me why I work so hard," he said. "My kids motivate me to be successful, not just to provide for them, but so I can spend more time with them and my wife." Having the footage recorded on his doorbell camera was an added bonus. It gave Brandon a chance to watch the video back, reliving the memories attached to that special moment. It also preserved that interaction in time, creating something for his kids to one day revisit alongside many more happy memories of family life still to come. "I want my kids to carry those with them, long after I'm gone," he said.
