Higher education must align with industry needs, says deputy minister

Dr Ahmad presents the resolution from the engagement session to Mustapha (centre), witnessed by other attendees during the event. MIRI (April 23): As Malaysia approaches a critical phase of national transformation, the focus of higher education must shift beyond merely producing graduates to nurturing individuals who are equipped for the complex realities of both national and global job markets, said Deputy Minister of Higher Education Malaysia, Datuk Mustapha Sakmud. Mustapha said the Ministry of Higher Education 2025's mandate underscores a dynamic transformation of the higher education landscape in response to industrial shifts and global challenges. 'In my mandate to the higher education community, I stressed that the silo approach is no longer relevant. Universities and industries must sit together, plan, implement, and grow in unison,' he said. Mustapha delivered the officiating speech at the University-Industry Engagement Session (Borneo Zone) and Career Fair 2025 at Meritz Hotel, here today. He was representing the Minister of Higher Education Zambry Abdul Kadir, to officiate the event organised by Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) in collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM). He stressed that the Higher Education Plan 2025-2035 has been charted as a roadmap to ensure policies are inclusive and aligned with future needs. 'Sessions like this must not be seasonal events. They must become a permanent mechanism to drive the transformation of the higher education system. 'We must acknowledge that gaps still exist between academia and industry needs,' he emphasised. The key concerns identified are graduates lacking practical skills and professional attitudes; curricula not adapting swiftly to industrial shifts; university research not being translated into marketable innovation and minimal industry participation in the education ecosystem. With Sarawak's rich resources in oil and gas, digital technology, and creative industries, Mustapha said the state's universities are well-positioned to be a model for symbiotic university-industry collaboration. He expressed hope that the session would spark initiatives such as establishment of and Industry-University Collaboration Centre by 2026, development of an Industry Talent Incubator for tourism training, skill development, and microcredentials, application of university research to support Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG). 'We are moving towards demand-driven higher education, where universities no longer plan from ivory towers, but from the heart of employment realities and entrepreneurship. 'The Ministry will continue to act as a facilitator, providing incentives, frameworks, and collaborative platforms,' he said, urging for an end to the 'finger-pointing culture' and the start of lasting, strategic partnerships. He added that the Ministry is currently focused on three core areas such as enhancing meaningful graduate employability, strengthening demand-driven research and innovation, and developing adaptive, agile, high-value future talent. In addition, the event also witnessed the signing of several Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) between Unimas and Samling Group, IANA Corporation Sdn Bhd, and Dewan Usahawan Bumiputera Sarawak (Miri Branch). Also present was Unimas Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Ahmad Hata Rasit. higher education industry needs Mustapha Sakmud
