Major UK airport opens new security areas as part of £1.3billion terminal that will ‘rival Europe'

Plus, a tiny UK airport gets new 1-hour flights to stunning British Isle that's warmer than UK with Caribbean-style beaches FLY AWAY Major UK airport opens new security areas as part of £1.3billion terminal that will 'rival Europe' Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) MANCHESTER Airport has opened its new security hall, with half-term travellers being the first to use it. The security hall in Manchester Airport's new Terminal 2 is part of a 10-year, £1.3billion project that is now nearing its completion. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 2 Manchester Airport's new security hall has opened as part of a major renovation The new scanners will eventually mean that travellers will not have to remove liquids from their bags. The airport is currently preparing for a busy week as families flee the country for the May half-term. Over one million passengers are expected to fly into or out of the airport during the school break. The airport's transformation project started back in 2015, with the first milestone being hit back in 2021 when the new extension to Terminal 2 opened. Since, the older part of Terminal 2 has been redeveloped. The new security hall also follows new check-in desks that opened a few weeks ago. The Terminal is expected to be fully open by the end of this year, when a new departure lounge, shops and bars open - in addition to pier 2, which will house extra gates. Manchester Airport Managing Director Chris Woodroofe said: "Seeing the first passengers go into the new security hall is very exciting for everyone here, as it was one of the major milestones we have been working towards since first announcing the transformation 10 years ago "Here at Manchester Airport, we are proud to connect the North to the world and as we take these huge steps towards completing our £1.3bn transformation it means we're connecting those passengers via an airport terminal that can rival any across Europe. "The new security hall is opening just in time for the May half-term break which is one of the busiest weeks of the year for us – I'm looking forward to hearing what our passengers think of it." Belfast Airport £100million upgrade In total, the security hall houses 10 new lanes, five of which are already open. Currently passengers do still need to remove liquids from their back when going through security and this is because different airports are introducing the scanners at different rates. Therefore, to avoid confusion, the old rules of taking liquids out of bags remains in place. Manchester Airport also recently announced a multi-million pound investment in Terminal 3, which will free-up space and improve the passenger experience. The project includes remodelling the entrance to the terminal, the security hall and the departure lounge, which will create extra space for passengers and for new retailers. There will be a new 500 seat bar area with airfield views and an expanded dining area with 200 extra seats too. The new T2 has replaced T1 which will eventually close. Once the renovation work on T2 is complete, which is likely to be this year, T1 will close completely and merge into T3. T3 first opened in 1989 and mainly operates for domestic flights. Another major UK airport, multi-billion-pound expansion was also recently approved. The airport announced its new partnership with Blue Islands, an airline that specialises in serving the Channel Islands. Known as the "Channel Islands' airline", Blue Islands launched its new services to Jersey and Guernsey earlier this week. The new routes operate every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, to and from Newcastle. Jersey and Guernsey are located between Britain and France and offer aquamarine waters and white sandy beaches. Just nine miles by five miles, Jersey is known as the 'little island with the big spirit'. It boasts a warm and sunny climate, making it ideal for those looking to pursue a range of outdoor activities including hiking, surfing, kayaking, and diving. There are also a wide variety of historic sites to visit, including Jersey's capital Saint Helier where you'll find Elizabeth Castle, the Maritime Museum, and historic sites like Liberation Square and Royal Square. There are also shopping hubs like Liberty Wharf and St. Helier Central Market. An easy holiday destination for Brits, this island is home to hundred-year-old castles, food with French and English influences, coastal walks, and some of the best beaches. World's largest hidden waterfall plunging 11,500ft under freezing Arctic - where epic WW2 battle saw British ship sunk St. Brelade's Bay Beach is located on the south of the island and received a Travellers' Choice award from TripAdvisor last year. St. Ouen's Bay is another popular choice, famous for its golden sands and safe swimming with one visitor saying they felt "as if they were in the Caribbean". "Must be one of the most beautiful beaches on earth. Crystal clear sea," another tourist added. "Surrounded by great restaurants and hotels." Just 14 miles off the French coast but 85 miles from the south of England coastline, Jersey's location means it has milder climate, with more sunshine hours than the rest of the British Isles. More Information About Jersey Where is Jersey located? Jersey is part of the Channel Islands, which are between England and France. The island group is located 85 miles from the south coast of England and 15 miles from the French coast. Jersey and Guernsey are the largest of the Channel Islands, with smaller inhabited islands of Alderney, Sark and Herm. The whole island of Jersey is just five miles long and nine miles wide and is made up of 12 parishes, with the capital city being St Helier. Is Jersey part of the UK? No it isn't, however the UK is the sovereign state responsible for the territory. Jersey is a Crown Dependency, meaning King Charles is its monarch. Although it is not part of the UK it is part of the British Isles. It is known as the Bailiwick of Jersey which means it is a territory administered by a bailiff, who is a civil head and the most important citizen in the country. Do I need a passport to get to Jersey? You don't need to carry your passport or identity card when travelling from the UK to Jersey, but its always a good idea to carry one. When entering the country you will need some form of recognised photographic identification for Jersey Customs and Immigration Officers to check so they can confirm your identity, nationality and evidence of your immigration permission. There are no formal immigration controls when travelling within the Common Travel Area. In August, the average temperature of the island sits between 18 and 23 degrees, sometimes reaching 28 degrees. And you don't even need your passport to get to the tropical-like location (but it is recommended you take it). Five coastal spots in South Africa that feel like the Caribbean

When people think 'Caribbean,' they picture blue waters, soft sand, and a slow, tropical vibe. But you don't need to leave South Africa to find that. Along the country's coast, there are pockets that could easily pass for a tropical escape. Here are five coastal spots that bring serious island energy – no passport required! Up near the Mozambique border, Kosi Bay is all palm trees, clear estuaries, and warm water. The lakes and channels form a unique ecosystem that feels far removed from typical South African beach towns. Snorkel in the crystal shallows or just float – Caribbean-style. Take a look here: #kosibay It's raw, remote, and ridiculously beautiful. Think lush green cliffs dropping into aqua waves. The sand's golden, the water's warm, and the whole place runs on island time. You won't find mega-resorts in this part of South Africa – just nature, surf, and that slow, breezy rhythm. Take a look here: #coffeebay Sodwana's coral reefs, warm Indian Ocean waters, and world-class diving bring strong Caribbean vibes to the KZN coast. It's one of the best places in the country to dive, with tropical fish, turtles, and the occasional whale shark. Off the beach, the sand dunes and bushland give it a wild, untouched edge. Take a look here: #sodwanabay Tucked between forest and sea, Nature's Valley looks like something off a travel poster. Calm lagoons, jungle-thick surroundings, and quiet beaches give it a low-key island feel. You can hike, swim, or just lie back and soak up the paradise. Take a look here: #naturesvalley Keurbooms has that blend of soft sand and clear blue water that screams 'Caribbean getaway.' The water's a bit cooler than the tropics, but the beauty level matches. Paddle up the Keurbooms River or relax on the beach – either way, it's easy to forget you're in South Africa.
