Politics latest: Senior Labour figures distance themselves from PM's speech

Greens call for UK to begin talks on rejoining EU ahead of summit The Green Party says the government should begin negotiations with EU diplomats about rejoining the bloc. Officials will be meeting in London for the UK-EU summit on Monday, where the possibility of a trade deal will be high up the agenda. But the Greens have bigger aspirations. They tabled an amendment today calling on the government to take practical sets to rejoin the EU, some nine years after the country voted to leave. Carla Denyer told the Commons: "The cost of leaving the EU amounting to £1m an hour in 2022 according to ONS data. "It makes total economic sense for the UK and for the people within it to use next week's summit to start discussions with the EU on what the process of re-joining might be." The amendment also says the government should negotiate re-entry to the customs union, the Erasmus programme, and resume free movement. Package to benefit hard-working people coming soon The Starmer administration has called for a "reset" with the EU, but it is fairly safe to say the Greens' suggestions will fall on deaf ears. The PM did have a chat on the phone to his Irish counterpart today, though, where the pair mentioned the upcoming summit. We're told they agreed to try to settle "an ambitious package" that would "benefit hard-working people and businesses across Europe". The Liberal Democrats have also said the UK should also move closer to Europe - with Sir Ed Davey calling for the creation of a "bespoke" customs union with the EU. Tories: 'We will tear up any backroom deal that betrays Brexit' Unsurprisingly, the Conservatives have ruled out all of these options. Kemi Badenoch asked: "What's [Starmer] about to give away? "Look at Chagos, US tariffs and the India deal. Now Starmer's EU 'reset' risks more sellouts." She has also set out her "five tests", which include no return of free movement, no loss of UK fishing rights and no new cash to the EU. "If Labour surrenders powers to Brussels, a future Conservative government will take them back", she warned. Badenoch might need to give a bit more thought about how she's going to get back into office first, though…

Ellie Chowns in party leadership bid

This story is only available to Hereford Times subscribers. Click here to find out why and how to subscribe for exclusive stories. North Herefordshire MP Ellie Chowns has launched a bid to become national co-leader of the Greens. She and current co-leader Adrian Ramsay, who represents Waveney Valley in East Anglia, made the joint announcement earlier today (May 12) after the party's other co-leader Carla Denyer said she would not re-stand for the position 'As co-leaders, @AdrianRamsay and I will grow Green power, hold government to account, and lead with ambition, unity and deep-rooted values,' she tweeted this morning. Hereford to get 'youngest mayor in six centuries' The pair already have already launched a campaign website, and a campaign video. In it, she says: 'The old parties are crumbling fast. After the next election, Green MPs could hold the balance of power. 'Adrian and I know we can achieve so much more.' What are your thoughts? Both only won their Westminster seats at last July's general election, being among four Green Party of England and Wales candidates to do so, up from the party's previous tally of a single MP. The party made further gains in county elections in England earlier this month, made a net gain of 43 local councillors. Earlier its deputy leader Zack Polanski, a London Assembly member, launched a solo leadership challenge, saying the current party is 'too polite'. A leadership ballot of party members will take place over the summer.

Adrian Ramsay and Ellie Chowns to stand for election as Greens co-leaders

The Waveney Valley MP announced the re-election bid on X on Monday morning, days after current co-leader Carla Denyer announced she would not stand again in order to focus on her work as an MP. 'We're standing to lead @TheGreenParty into its most ambitious chapter yet,' he said. 'As co-leaders, @EllieChowns and I will grow Green power, hold government to account, and lead with ambition, unity and deep-rooted values,' he said. The duo were two of four Greens elected to Parliament in last year's general election, the best result the party has ever had at Westminster. The double ticket could not be filled by two man, as the Green Party's rules mean two co-candidates cannot be of the same gender. Zack Polanski, the party's deputy leader and a member of the London Assembly, has announced a leadership bid and told The Guardian his bid would be focused on transforming the Greens into an 'eco-populism' mass movement. He said the party needs to be more 'bold'. Announcing her decision not to seek re-election as co-leader, Ms Denyer said: 'For me, my guiding light has always been 'How can I make the biggest positive impact?'. 'And I've decided that for the next few years, the best way I can serve the party and the country is to pour all of my skills, passion and energy into being the best MP I can be, in Parliament and in Bristol Central. 'We're at a critical juncture in British politics. People are feeling deeply let down and are looking for real alternatives. 'And with the hard-right on the rise in the UK and across the world, it's never been more important for Greens to offer a genuinely hopeful vision for our future – and crucially to put forward real solutions to make people's lives better.' She said she would focus on issues like rent controls, moves to 'futureproof British industry to secure good green jobs for this generation and the next', and to 'replace the racism and xenophobia at the heart of our migration system with common sense and compassion'. The Greens usually hold leadership elections every two years, but an internal poll has not been held since 2021. That year, an out-of-sequence election was held, and Ms Denyer and Mr Ramsay were elected for a three-year term. The party did not go ahead with an election in 2024, as it would have coincided with the general election. Nominations for the election open at the start of June, and a ballot will be held throughout August.
