At Commencement, The Woodlands at Furman Graduates to ‘Certified University Based Retirement Community (UBRC)' Status

GREENVILLE, S.C., June 2, 2025 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — The Woodlands at Furman, a 350+ resident senior living community in partnership with Furman University, has met criteria to be recognized as a 'Certified University Based Retirement Community (UBRC)', the highest category among more than 85 University Retirement Communities (URCs) nationwide. As launched last Fall by the nation's largest directory and information resource for the rapidly growing model of senior living communities with connection to a host university or college, The Woodlands is the first 'Certified UBRC' in the Eastern United States, and second overall, along with Mirabella at ASU in Tempe, Arizona. 'As universities and colleges celebrate Commencement nationwide, we are incredibly proud to 'graduate' as a 'Certified University Based Retirement Community (UBRC),' the equivalent of magna cum laude status,' stated Rick Brackett, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Woodlands at Furman. 'We are truly honored by our partnership with Furman University and the work of the entire team at The Woodlands in creating an active, intellectually stimulating, and intergenerational environment that is reinventing senior living while bringing residents and students together to meet the needs of an aging population.' 'With the continuing growth in the number of University Retirement Communities (URCs) in the U.S. it was imperative to bring structure to this sector, in particular recognizing communities representing the highest level of integration with a host university or college,' stated Andrew Carle, Founder of As Director of the Program in Senior Living Administration at George Mason University, Carle created a 5-criteria model in 2006 for a 'University Based Retirement Community (UBRC)' that has been recognized as the standard for defining such communities. The criteria served as the basis for the certification program, with communities meeting all five, along with related standards, eligible for 'Certified' status. Carle previously served as Senior Consultant – Health Intelligence for J.D. Power and Associates, for whom he helped lead development of its Certified Senior Living Community program in 2017. Certification criteria include the proximity of the community to the campus, documented resident-to-university and student-to-community programs, a continuum of senior living services, the percent of residents who are alums or retired university faculty or staff, and a financial relationship between the community and university that supports long term operational success. The Woodlands is located on 99-year leased land from Furman University, and residents can participate in the university's Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, receive courtesy greens fees at the Furman Golf Course, and discounts to both athletic and visual and performing arts events. Nearly four dozen residents hold a personal connection to the university, including alums, retired faculty and staff, and past members of the Board of Trustees. The community offers a full continuum of senior living services, while providing easy access for student internships, employment, and volunteer work within the community. The three-year certification allows the community to display the 'Certified UBRC' logo, as well as receive the highest search ranking on the website. ABOUT THE WOODLANDS AT FURMAN The Woodlands at Furman is a Premier Life Plan Community in Greenville, SC, offering a full continuum of care. FLAMES RETOOL TRACKER: Could Carter King be solution at centre?

Article content Every year, King's numbers improved. He went from being a guy who scored three goals and eight assists in his first season, back in 2021-22, to being a first-line centre who potted 21 lamp-lighters and added 22 helpers this year. Article content 'If you look at his stats, there's just a natural progression that occurred every year,' Carle explained. 'Our 2022 team, he was our fourth-line left-wing, then he slid over into the middle his second year then moved up our line chart his junior year and then in his senior year he was our first-line centre. Article content 'He's played power play and penalty kill every year for his last three years, so he's one of the few guys who had the responsibility of doing both and really did a nice job and excelled with it. If he didn't improve his offence he wouldn't have had the opportunities he did on the power play.' Article content None of this is to say that King should be expected to start next season playing full-time with the Flames. There's an adjustment that comes for any player when they're making the jump to pro hockey and King will rightfully be given time to find his game with the Calgary Wranglers. How quickly he can adjust to the speed of playing against pros every night will be a major factor in determining if and when he gets NHL minutes. Article content Article content But ideally, he'll push to get in the mix the way Sam Morton did. Morton, another free-agent centre the Flames signed at the conclusion of his NCAA career, put up 20 goals and 25 assists with the Wranglers and then scored in his NHL debut in the final game of the year. Article content Morton likely will be pushing for playing time as the Flames fourth-line centre and Justin Kirkland could be doing the same if he's re-signed. Article content Could King factor into their plans? It wouldn't surprise anyone if he does and he put up two points in two regular-season games with the Wranglers after signing. Article content It was brief, but the Flames hope that cameo will provide King with an idea of what he needs to do to push himself over the summer. Article content 'I think for Carter, being able to come in at the end was massive for him,' Edwards said. 'In our meetings, it was, 'OK, I've seen what it is now and I know I have to adjust my game and my training and my mindset, in terms of how you have to check and the pace and the competitiveness and the size and the strength and all that stuff. It's invaluable for those guys to come in at the end of the year and get a taste of what it's like. Article content

FLAMES RETOOL TRACKER: Could Carter King be solution at centre?

Article content The Denver Pioneers have provided a consistent pipeline of NHL talent for years. Article content Now, the question around Calgary is whether Carter King might be next. Article content For a Flames team that is short on young depth at the centre position, it was a big deal that they managed to convince the 23-year-old to put pen to paper on a contract when he finished his time at the University of Denver this spring. Article content Article content A born-and-raised Calgarian who had captained the NCAA powerhouse while playing on the power play, penalty kill and serving as the Pioneers' first-line centre? Yeah, that sort of sounds like a potential X-Factor, doesn't it? Article content Article content David Carle, the Pioneers head coach, has watched King develop over four years in one of American college hockey's elite programs and fully believes he can make an impact at the pro level. Article content 'He's going to gain the coach's trust with his consistency and trustworthiness on the ice,' said Carle, whose name has consistently come up during NHL head coaching searches over the past few years. 'That'll be how he gets his foot in the door and then his offence will continue to grow at that level, as well.' Article content The Pioneers head coach has seen lots of his players go on to pro careers and, this year alone, King saw former teammates like Zeev Buium and Bobby Brink playing with NHL teams. Article content So, could he be next? Article content There are a few things that repeatedly come up when hockey people talk about King. They talk about his impressive faceoff abilities, his sky-high hockey IQ and his work on special teams — especially the penalty kill. Article content Article content And those attributes are absolutely a big part of what sets him apart. Article content Article content He took more faceoffs than anyone in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference this past season, winning 54.4% of the 979 draws he took. When you consider that the Flames had the third-worst faceoff percentage (46.2%) in the NHL last season, his proficiency could obviously become attractive. Article content 'We always tell our centremen, 'You win faceoffs, you're gonna play. The coach wants to win faceoffs, so get really good at that,'' Flames director of player development Ray Edwards said. 'And he's a good student of the game. He studies it and wants to learn. So we're expecting Carter to have a great summer and be ready to go and have a great camp and see where it takes him.' Article content Faceoffs alone won't get King into the NHL lineup, of course, but nobody is saying that's the only attractive part of his game. Article content And while there's been a lot of focus on his penalty-killing and two-way instincts, Carle watched as King evolved over his four years with the Pioneers, who won two NCAA championships in his time with the program.

Urbana-based Carle Health to lay off 612 workers as it winds down its insurance companies

Urbana-based Carle Health is laying off 612 workers as it winds down two of its subsidiary health insurance companies. Carle Health – a system that includes eight hospitals in central Illinois – announced earlier this year that its insurance company subsidiaries Health Alliance and FirstCarolinaCare would cease operating all lines of business, except Medicare Advantage plans. Health Alliance offers insurance plans in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa and Ohio. The company's health plans will maintain operations through the rest of 2025. Carle plans to 'reduce staff on a rolling basis to maintain full support of member services throughout the remainder of 2025,' a spokesperson said Monday. The first of the layoffs is scheduled to begin July 8, according to a required notice filed last week with the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. Earlier this year, Carle explained its plan to wind down its health insurance subsidiaries in a news release, saying the health insurance industry has changed dramatically in recent years, especially for insurance companies owned by health care providers. 'Because of this, health plans, like Health Alliance and FirstCarolinaCare have struggled to achieve operational and financial efficiency,' Carle said in the release. Specifically, Carle's health insurance subsidiaries have struggled with medical inflation, rising prescription drug costs, more patients with chronic conditions and changing technologies, among other challenges, according to the release. Though Health Alliance and FirstCarolinaCare worked to grow larger in recent years in hopes of overcoming those challenges, 'they have not been able to reach a financially viable level to compete effectively in today's environment,' according to the release. 'We recognize that in today's health insurance environment, our health plans no longer successfully compete and Carle Health must effectively utilize our resources to meet the changing needs of customers,' Dr. James Leonard Carle Health president and CEO said in the release. In Illinois, Health Alliance offers health plans for individuals and employers as well as Medicare Advantage plans and Medicare Supplement plans. This year, Health Alliance offers plans on the state's Affordable Care Act exchange throughout most of Illinois, outside of the Chicago area. Its exit could mean that for some residents of central and southern Illinois, their only option for an exchange plan for next year might be through Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois, depending on which insurers offer plans and where for next year.
